Ran with the new Strava app for the second time today, which will probably be the last until the next beta update (back to NRC). Confirmed no alerts yet for mileage markers. Gave me an extremely fast time for my first mile. I know I'm not that fast! App crashed about halfway through my 6 mile run but somehow kept the information and kept going. Segments are also not included yet.
Beta testing continues. Back to Nike for my next few runs.

Disappointing. Hopefully they will add to the feature set once they get the basic functionality working properly. FWIW, the current Strava AW app was doing the same thing (very fast first mile) the last time I used it. Not sure if it has been fixed in the interim though.

I believe there is some sort of issue with WatchOS or the GPS hardware on the AW (doubtful), that causes screwy data at the start of recording the GPS track. You may have noticed that it appears that Nike truncates the first part of the GPS track to fix this. It seems I always start a little further down the road on the NRC map than I do in reality. When I have used the Pear app, I noticed the same issue at the start of runs.

I think I am on the verge of abandoning the Apple Watch Series 2 for running. None of the current running apps seem capable of replacing a dedicated running watch, and I don't really see anything on the horizon that will. The upcoming Strava app seems pretty basic and has it issues with accuracy it seems. It doesn't seem like iSmoothRun is ever going to release a AW Series 2 app, and NRC while it works fine for me, doesn't give you much in terms of data.

I really like the look of the Garmin Fenix 5S, so i put in a preorder. The only thing missing is music, and i guess I can just use my original AW for that either on my other wrist, or just without the band in my pocket. I actually came across this Apple Watch waist clip that I am going to give a try also. Kind of turns the AW into an expensive iPod Shuffle.

Maybe I'll change my mind in the time between now and when the Fenix 5S ships.

I gave up on the AW before Christmas due to repeated issues with the various running apps and bought myself a Forerunner 235. It's been absolutely brilliant and a revelation with how easy it is to use and how much useful information I get out of it.
Unfortunately, over the last few days I seem to have developed a nasty reaction to the strap - if I can't work out why and stop it I may have to come back to the AW, but it really is limited compared to what you get from a dedicated running watch

That looks nasty. I have had many Garmin watches over the years, and never had any issues. I wonder if they changed the material in the bands recently?

Yeah, it's a bit annoying! The strange thing is, I'd have expected to see a reaction when I first started wearing it if I was going to get one, but I've had it for over 2 months now and it's only just started

Reading this is very disappointing because I know that you are a trooper and quite the apologist for the AW2, so when you say this, I know it's problematic. I too have gone to wearing my Garmin again while running along with the AW2. I usually try out a different app each run for comparison purposes.

The Strava beta app in very inaccurate as of today. I assume it will improve, but for right now, it has me doing PR's all over the place. Yesterday it would barely launch.
I tried the RunGo app yesterday and ran into similar issues.

I do like the Nike app, but as @Bob190 says, it's just too limited in the information provided.

You'll have to update us on how your Garmin 5S is when you get it.

Either by accident or somewhat stealthily .. it seems Strava released the AW Series 2 app today that uses the watches GPS. I say that since there is no mention of it in the release notes, however i just went for a walk without my phone and it recorded my track and synced it to Strava when I got back.

The GPS track looked a little bit squirrelly, but not terrible. The pace looked correct on the overall section, however the split looked much too fast.

The app seems very, very basic right now. Maybe it will improve over time.

I see that as well. Im on the beta so it does not show an update available for me. I'm sure it's the same as the version I'm using.
Elle, from Strava support confirmed the release in the support forums and asked for a review. That's crazy because as of my last few tests, it's garbage right now. That will lead to some very poor reviews.
I'm frankly stunned that they released this version with no mile marker feedback or customization of ANY kind. Stunning.

Wow Strava... wouldn't you make a huge song and dance about it I feel it were true? Will try it out later. The only release notes for today was the usual "bug fixes" so I didn't even bat an eyelid.

I just did a walk that I know for a fact is .84 miles and the Strava AW2 app measured it as 1 mile even. Not good.

Just finished an after work bike ride and used the new Strava AW2 app to track it along with my Garmin 520. Just to be sure .. I left my phone at home. Not unexpectedly the Strava app tracked perfectly with the Garmin .. here is the Strava activity completed with the watch app:

https://www.strava.com/activities/875130781

I am not expecting such good results running unfortunately as typically any GPS device tracks bike rides pretty well. I was pleased that the bike auto pause worked very well.

I think not in this case. I think they still need to iron out some issues before they make a big deal of it. The map, compared to nike or Garmin, is super squirrelly right now. Smoothing needs to be done.

Here is my evening run with Strava AW on one arm and the Garmin 735 on the other. Auto Pause enabled on both devices. Mapping this run out online is 8.5 miles.

Strava 8.6 mi. - 1:17:52 - 9:00/mi. https://www.strava.com/activities/875316525
Garmin 8.28 mi - 1:18:40 - 9:30/mi https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1585726224

Not sure why the huge discrepancy in time since auto pause was enabled on both and I started and stopped them at the same time. I do notice that it takes about 2-3 seconds for the Garmin to pause when stopped, but also 2-3 seconds to start up again. That's why I believe that Garmin shorted me the distance, since I was running through an area with multiple stops.

Anyway, this was my real time observation after one night.

Had a chance to try it on a run, and overall it worked pretty well:

https://www.strava.com/activities/875883778

A few observations:
  • Auto Pause seems very sensitive. A few times I raised my wrist to review my stats while running and it went into auto pause mode. I am guessing because I was holding my arm steady to read the watch. It seems the sensitivity could be backed off a touch
  • The GPS track looks a bit squirelly .. I am guessing that no post-processing is being done on the recorded GPS data ala what Garmin does which results in a bit of a squiggly effect. The track looks much like tracks recorded with a cell phone
  • Would be nice to have a bit more information on the watch at the end of a run .. would like to see Avg HR and Avg Pace.
  • Future state .. any Apple Watch standalone running app needs to have voice over. It just is tougj to look at the watch while running with a screen that isn't always on. Nike, Pear, and RunGo all have voice feedback at configurable splits so we know it can be done.
All in all .. it's basic, but a good start nonetheless.

Left this same feedback with Strava.

Ran with Strava on AW2 this evening and it measured a 2.43 mi run where the AW workout app measures the same route at 2.28 mi or 6.5% longer on Strava.

The map looks ok but the route is simple, long, parallel streets.

It took a couple minutes at the beginning of my run for my heart rate to register in the Strava display.

Very intriguing post and informative for many yet for complete, and I cannot stress this enough … “a complete ‘running’ newbie” such as myself yet to have an Apple Watch I’m lost.

My only experience at running is with track and field in my youth about 23-30yrs ago (43 now). I’m born, bred and died as a sprinter [100metres, 110m Hurdles, Long Jump]. Stress life at work and laziness with eating has me thinking and wanting the need to change habits. As a sprinter I cannot job on the treadmill at the gym - treadmills have a sensation of “pulling” and I’m used to pushing [Sprinter].

So I plan on doing the following to boost my strength training regimen:

Skipping Rope at the gym and at home

Running - I honestly think up and down my block will be the most I’ll be able to do for the first 3wks (physical and mental barriers)

On The Trail Question:

“I pre mapped the route on Strava to estimate the distance. 4.7 miles.” Was this done on the iPhone app / AppleWatch? IF the latter how can this be done?

“I believe that the one flaw the AW2 has is the ability to display a consistent current pace.” What do you mean by current pace?

Is this cadence for each step or for every two steps?

Is this a measurement of speed variances in between your run?

Is this a good thing or a bad thing to measure?

Can the Apple Watch accurately measure:

Skipping steps (double vs single)?

Speed of which you jump rope or the speed of your jumps?

Does Nike+ measure your heart rate both During and After your run?

Can it separately (automatically) measure your heart rates from the run and your “cooling” period?

I’m sure I”ll have other questions within this thread.

PS: I plan on getting Apple Watch Nike + or whatever it’s named.

  • There are several websites that will allow you to create a route, that you can either follow, or print out for reference. Garmin, Strava, Runkeeper and Nike will all allow this to be done on their websites. Gmaps pedometer works too. They should all match each other in terms of mileage.

“I believe that the one flaw the AW2 has is the ability to display a consistent current pace.” What do you mean by current pace?
  • Across several AW2 apps, the current pace, or the pace that you are running RIGHT NOW, RIGHT THIS SECOND, spikes up and down variably. See DC Rainmaker's video review of current pacing. (
) Average pace, or the overall run pace, seems to work well, assuming the app has been well designed.
Is this cadence for each step or for every two steps?

Is this a measurement of speed variances in between your run?

Is this a good thing or a bad thing to measure?
  • Depends. My Garmin uses every step to measure cadence. Supposedly, and I'm not an expert, the more elite athletes have a higher cadence, leading to a better running form, and making you faster. It's a personal preference whether or not you want to measure it, but theoretically, the Apple Watch should be able to show ads the cadence since it records steps. Generally the faster you run the higher the cadence anyway. Learning to have a higher cadence even during slower runs is a training mechanism that many athletes go for.
Can the Apple Watch accurately measure:

Skipping steps (double vs single)? I don't know.

Speed of which you jump rope or the speed of your jumps? There are apps that can do this. Gymatic is one.

Does Nike+ measure your heart rate both During and After your run? During

Can it separately (automatically) measure your heart rates from the run and your “cooling” period? Not as of now.

Yeah @jsmitty I'm even on the beta which has had 3 releases since the new app dropped, ran today and it recorded 7 miles during a 6.4 mile run. No where close. It's got a long way to go. I do think they are fixing the HR bugs, but the mapping and GPS is really bad right now.
Will use it once a week to test as long as they keep releasing updates, but will run with my Garmin and possibly Nike RC until then.

The heart rate on the AW2 is the biggest disappointment for me. It's pretty much all over the place. It's almost not worth bothering, it would be better to disable the sensor completely and use the battery life gained to keep the screen on constantly during a run.

Like Bob190 I'm on the verge of dumping the watch. I think what I should do is switch back to my Garmin Vivoactive for a week and see if I miss it. Then I'm pretty much set on updating to the Forerunner 235 next time I can get a good deal on one. I love the look of the Fenix 5 but it's complete over kill for my needs and the cost is ridiculous.

As for all the various running apps, both 3rd party and built in (including Nike) are disappointing in one way or another. They all scream that it wasn't real runners that designed the apps, which is shocking particuiarly for Runkeeper and Strava.

Bob & others,
Although the watch doesn't sound like it's working out for you guys, I did want to say thanks for all your posts on this thread. I was going to buy a Nike/ Apple watch when they first came out, but then started hearing all the reports of the app crashing/ not working, etc, and didn't buy. It's from reading this thread that convinced me the watch would be great for my needs. Casual runner who is a long time Nike plus user, currently using and older version of the Nike + app on my iPhone (which was a pain to maintain as it forced me to turn off auto-update of all apps, and manually update everything else). All I'm looking for from a running watch is the ability to track my time, distance & average speed, and be able to play music at the same time. I just got my watch & it's been great so far. I know it's not perfect for a lot of more serious runners, but it's been great for me & I appreciate all of the comments you guys have shared on here (mostly reassuring people that though basic, the Nike + app is solid).

So reading through the thread on the Strava forum about the abysmal Strava update, and someone pointed out another app called "Motifit". Anyone tried it/used it? http://www.motifitapp.com/

Looks like there are three versions, one for general fitness, one for running, one for cycling. Apparently the running one has voice feedback on the watch and natively uses Watch GPS. You can export activities as TCX files for importing into other services. I haven't installed/tried it yet (just got to work) but might give it a go tonight.

EDIT so I have installed Motifit Run. There was a bit of weirdness in that I had to uninstall/reinstall the watch app for some reason, but it's all fine now, this may have been because of some unrelated appstore weirdness that seems to be happening with updates at the moment.

It looks very good. You get a free week trial, or three workouts (whichever comes first). Then it's $2.99AUD for 1 month, $5.99AUD for a year, or $14.99AUD for lifetime. USD prices will be cheaper.

It's got lots of cool Heart Rate features. The run screen you can change the metrics similar to runkeeper. It doesn't appear to have autopause though I might not have looked hard enough yet. Once your run is complete you can email yourself a TCX/GPX file (which one is better?) and then upload this to the service of your choice. Presumably there is a simple way to automate this.

You are most welcome. What Ilike most about this forum is that people here genuinely seem to want the technology to work and offer suggestions based our opinion and not lofty expectations. The Nike app is just fine for a majority of the people out there. If you want more from the AW2, you SHOULD expect to run into problems. Personally, I'm a beta tester kind of a guy and a glutton for punishment, so I roll with it. I get super irritated ant the entitlement on the Strava and DCR boards. Strava is mostly a free app. They don't owe us anything. Get over yourselves people.

Anyway, glad the watch is working for you. I still use mine, but also run with a Garmin 735XT. I try out new apps all the time on my AW but mostly use the Garmin for the standard. For now.

Downloaded and tried it today along with my Garmin. Nice app with lots of features. No Auto Pause yet.

  • Motifit: 4.16 mi 30:12 7:15/mi
  • Garmin 735XT 4.07 mi 31:36 7:45/mi
No idea why the time is so far off. I had Auto Pause off on the Garmin, to make things equal. That's an easy press of the button. The Motifit use is either a force touch or a swipe over, which takes a second or two with sweaty hands. Not ideal. It does have customizable audio alerts though which is nice. Nice app. I'll try it again later this week.

Lastly, I tried to use the GPX export into Garmin which failed miserably. That doesn't appear to work well. GPX usually has mapping data I believe, where TCX doesn't maybe?

I tried to start a run with 'Motifit Run' app on my AW2 but keep getting "waiting for GPS". This app has everything I am looking for but can't start a run solely from my watch.
When you are getting that, swipe over to the left to the last screen and cancel the run. Then try again.

Hm I went for a run and it seemed to record it well, I get a map in the app and it looks pretty good. However the gpx/tcx exports don't work... eg I can export the file, but neither of them will import into Strava/Garmin/Runkeeper. They all complain that there is no time data in the file, but I've opened the file and it's definitely there.

I've raised it with Motifit will be interesting to see what they come back with.

EDIT okay, I was able to import my data into this site, and convert the tcx data to gpx data. Seems like the time in the file may be incorrectly formatted or something, but the conversion does enough to fix it and get the map into any of the services (Strava/Garmin/Runkeeper).

It's annoying and convoluted though so I obviously wouldn't choose to do this all the time.

But for those who have tried it like me and have a run they can't import into oen of the other services, this should fix that at least.

I raised the export issue with Motifit, they're lookking into it. They asked if I'm interested in trying a beta version with a fix, if this happens I'll let you all know how it goes.
