hey
I am here in this forum for the first time and am currently reading your posts on the graphics card
I feel just like you.
The fans of the RX580 run up every 20 seconds and then switch off completely.
....
What solution did you find to “modden” the card?

No way to fix this unless you tinker with it in Windows. No thanks. I replaced the RX580 with an Apple-recommended RX560. All is well. ??

I’m using an RX580 with 3 4K screens and never hear the fans if it helps

Wow !
on the one hand that is hopeful ... but
do you have any problems with the so-called zero fan mode of the card?
which operating system do you use?
Is this also an 8GB Saphire Pulse that Apple recommends?
Are they connected via HDMI and one via DVI?
Does that make a difference?
I do not think so.
I have a NEC 2690 and a NEC 302 here and both were connected via HDMI at the time
Every 20 seconds the fans have started and then go out again.

AMD Reference RX 580 8gb cards have a different; intelligant fan control setup = the fans spin when the GPU gets above a certain temp. This can be altered in Windows.

Using TWO monitors means that the GPU will be using more output power therefore more heat therefore more fan spinups.

Currently my MSI Armor RX580 8gb is powering one monitor @ 41C 14watts.

If I connect another monitor temp goes up to 54°C and much more power output.

Give your Mac Pro a good de-dusting, temps will drop ergo fan spinups will reduce.

So many people here have never done a 'whole case de-dusting ' & wonder why their 11 year old cMPs have problems.

This is more annoying than if they would always turn at a moderate speed.
This is apparently due to a multi-monitor operation.
I don't have a Windows computer here either.
What solution did you find to “modden” the card?

That's why I returned the card
but would like to find a solution.
I am currently still using a 280 AMD card

I am also not a technician and ask you where I can get the card
Have it converted so that this fan problem no longer occurs?

I also connected two monitors here and I don't want to do without them either.

I would appreciate a reply to my email address:

It seems you already found my RX580 VBIOS study thread. The answer is there.

I have no fan noise at all. I’m on a 4,1 to 5,1 with Mojave OS. My card is the MSI version, I’ll have to check at work next week. I think it was two HDMI and one Displayport connection, but can confirm it next week.
Even when using FCP for my videos, again 4K screen recordings from Windows the fans never ramp up. The only time I hear a fan is when the BOINC screen saver comes on

Recently got the Apple approved rx580, getting fan noise every few minutes that is very resonant (and annoying) since ambient temperature have gotten higher (quote warm in the UK right now)

Tracking the temps and fan speeds, when GPU gets to over 50 the fans kick in to bring it back down to about 45 That repeats every 5-10 mins. The fans are especially resonant at 17% speed or 860rpm if they just sat at slightly higher they are not really audible but at this speed the two fans play off each other (I tried stopping one or other with my finger and it’s the combination of the two that is making the resonance)

I tried a blob of bluetac on one fan to try and change the sound but hasn’t really helped

Ideally want to kill the fans entirely or have then run constantly at a non-resonant speed but doesn’t seem to be a simple solution to that

If you don't mind to disable the UEFI GOP, makes your RX580 can't show the boot screen, you can mod the VBIOS to keep the fans always ON, or change the temperature threshold etc.

The spinning animation doesn’t even present itself since pulling the old card. In fact, screen doesn’t even go black anymore. Wallpaper just fades dark for a bit, then bang, machine is off.

I think you’re onto something here too. I’m still at 24bit color, I’ve seen others with this card doing 30bit I believe.

I can confirm my RX480 is displaying 30 bit colors. Mine is PowerColor reference version, and I love it. Fan noise is acceptable, only utilize single six pin auxiliary power.

I have no any graphical glitch, but I have strange issues after updating to 10.14.6, each I boot it wouldn’t firing up my monitor anymore, I must turn off my monitor on off and then it would displays login screen. Previously it not happened on 10.14.5 Mojave below. My monitor is Dell 4K display.

ResXtreme (free apps) allow user to select different resolutions with 8bit or 10bit colours. The following captures are with Radeon VII, but also works with my PULSE RX580. Which means should also work with RX480.

Will the rx580 with the single fan on one side work? I need that one because the fan makes the pulse a little too close for comfort height-wise. Any experience with those variants?

I need a bigger better GPU for my 2010 mac pro 3.33 running Sierra and having already tried a GTX 970 with the software I need it for , I know nvidia cards will not work , so it has to be AMD.

I thought GTX 970 (and up to 1080 Ti) would work for Sierra / High Sierra? Install Web driver first?

AMD cards are more future proof if one is willing to use Mojave or higher. The issue I see is that RX 580 is not that beefy. Based on the pinned GPU thread and my calculation its RPI is only 32% higher than a GTX 680 2G. Want more than 147% higher RPI? There are choices between Vega 56, Vega 64, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1080, etc. The AMD cards would require additional power and might require Mojave to function well. For sure the AMD cards would carry us all the way to Big Sur but at that point we might as well use a Navi card like 5700 XT instead.
