Actually Not This! There is no way that is the issue. As i said before anyone saying they do not have lag either a. Have something on their computer making it run differently or b. Don’t notice it. There is a near 0 probability that half of us got a M1 Mac that has stutter and the other half didn’t Unless there is some difference between machines. I’m going to try an adblocker but as i said its usually when I’m fast scrolling that it happens slow scroll it doesn’t. So it may also depend how people use their machines.

Pretty choppy here (macrumors site included, only extension is Wipr adblocker which helps), rest of the system is smooth scrolling (even chrome) so looks like a waiting game for an update for us experiencing/noticing it. I have the Air M1 and 2020 i3 base Air.

However I'm on Catalina on Intel and some say the stutter scrolling is a 11.0.1 thing and not on 11.0

Still choppy on the M1 with 11.1 Beta.

Ugh, I was kind of hoping it was the ads, but sounds like it's not if you're using Wipr. I hope they can fix / improve this with updates because, it sounds silly, but Safari scrolling smoothness is very important to me. Even though I'm an engineer and use my machines to write, compile, and run all sorts of code, web browsing is still probably the thing I do most on any computer. And I tend to be a fast scroller (flick and catch), so a machine typically has to have quite good GPU performance to keep Safari scrolling smooth for me.

Had a 2020 mbp 16gb (returned for m1). Scrolling was butter but then they release a update to safari that made it choppy. The safari update was the culprit.

Really hope this is what's affecting the M1 Air I played with and that it gets fixed.

I’m actually surprised they had M1 MacBooks at Costco! They still only have intel models on display at the Costco near me.

Must have been poor internet connection at Costco, Safari is noticeable smoother on my M1 MBA that my 15"MBP. I know you tested another machine, but it might be situated closer to the router, or the Mac was connected to a slower band / more congested channel on the router. A shop is a bad place to test for internet responsiveness as they have so many machines connected to the same router.

I don't think it was this. I let the page finish loading before scrolling, and even came back to the M1 Air after trying the Intel MacBooks, which were literally right next to the M1 Air, so the page had been loaded for a few minutes by that time.

I see lag in everything I use, phones, ps5 , works laptop etc. I read some people are more susceptible to seeing Frame drops and lag, unfortunately I am one of them. I get annoyed watching some tv as the camera doesn't pan smoothly etc. I def see lag on safari on the M1 but I'm used to seeing it, it annoys me but I guess its one of those things!

Does iPad Pro's 120Hz screen lags to you?

Yeah, I’ve got an M1 Mac Pro and it is buttery smooth scrolling with Safari. It was one of the things I noticed a big improvement in coming from a 16” Mac Pro. I think your experience is an outlier.

Apparently smooth scrolling hasn't been an option in Safari for a year or two. I came from a MBP 2014 and the first thing I noticed was how choppy scrolling in Safari is compared to my 6 year old computer. Really disappointing.

That’s called motion blur. If movies didn’t have it they would look like soap operas.

Any modern web browser made within the last year or two, on a computer made within the last couple years, even with built-in video (like the M1 Macs) should be able to handle any web sites with ease. The fact that you're seeing something like stodgy scrolling in Safari indicates something is seriously wrong, software-wise. If it doesn't add up (make sense), then it's not a hardware issue. Common sense would tell you that...

Our LG 65" 4K OLED TV does that... makes ANY movie look like a soap opera! We ended up watching an Indiana Jones movie (don't recall which one) and it was like watching a totally new movie! Fun and freaky at the same time! Why do soap operas look like that, anyways? Why aren't ALL TV shows and movies filmed that way?

Turn off the auto motion

You can turn it off. Disable TrueMotion under Picture Mode Settings.

It should be the first thing you turn off on any TV.

I do run an adblocker (Wipr) so maybe that smooths it out.

Pretty good write-up on the "why": https://www.cnet.com/how-to/soap-opera-effect-tom-cruise-wants-you-to-turn-it-off-heres-how/

In short: we are used to watching movies in 24fps, and motion interpolation screws up the aesthetic, big time. The first thing I do with any TV is turn the motion control off.

The 16" MBP I had was worse for scrolling, it would normally be running on the built-in Intel graphics which on those chips is a really poor version, worse than the Iris Pro that you get on the 13" Intels. The M1's should wipe the floor with it. I can certainly attest that scrolling in Safari on my M1 Air is much smoother than my recently sold 16"

Are you referring to mouse scroll wheel scrolling? That annoys me too, but I was referring to trackpad scrolling, which still supports smooth scrolling... as long as the CPU / GPU can keep up.

Sure, in theory, every modern computer, phone, and tablet should have powerful enough hardware to scroll web pages smoothly. In reality, there is plenty of poorly optimized software that causes stutters on modern, powerful machines. And it doesn't always get fixed quickly, or at all in some cases.

Guys this is Cleary a software issue with safari. I notice it on some sites and as soon as I use Chrome they are fine.

Do the 16" MBPs switch over to the dedicated GPU when plugged in? Because scrolling was very smooth on the 16" MBP at Costco, but it was plugged in, so maybe it would have been different on battery power.

Or, if this is indeed a Safari bug, maybe the Intel MacBooks on display were running an older version of Safari than the M1 Air. I'll have to check that next time I'm there.

Im referring to trackpad scrolling on my Air. Where do you see an option for smooth scrolling?
