In other news, Ford sells more cars than Ferrari or Mercedes.

Exactly, Apple sells more phones than Vertu. ;)

Oh wait, did you mean Apple was a luxury brand ? laughable. Apple is a commodity brand, as much as Samsung is. They sell to the everyman. Have you seen their market share numbers ?

Anyway why am I surprised by the comments here ? When Apple outsells everyone it's "Go Apple! You're the best!", when they get outsold it's "numbers are meaningless". Just part of the game discussing things with one-sided people.

Oh great.
Another god awful android phone by Samesung!
These people are idiots.
The iPhone 4S is THE phone to have. It beats every other phone in every single category I can think of.

Why the hell people are pre-ordering this plastic piece of crap is beyond me.
it'll break the first time it is in your pocket and you bend over!!
I assume its because its being given away Buy One Get One free that they have to do with every single android phone as they are all competely rubbish!

The day all other phone operators go bankrupt will be great, as finally all us iphone owners can go around hi-fiving each other as the world will see what great purchasing decisions we made.

Apple is a luxury brand.
It shows us to be better people than all the poor and stupid morons with their stupid crappy cheap androind junk (i can't bear to call an android device a phone as they are such rubbish they don't deserve to be called a phone).

Apple is a status symbol. FACT  :apple:

Just like every other "this phone/tablet will outdo iPhone" I'll believe it when I see it.

I personally dislike Samsung phones (I've owned several, none of which I liked) and if I was on Android it would not be my choice. Battery life on Samsung phones is always abysmal (and if it isn't at first, it will be in 2 months!).

How nice for Samsung and there I was thinking they didn't release these sort of figures.

*edit

Just clicked on the link. Daily Mail!? Let just close this thread shall we. :)

The G3 has carriers pre-orders of that number if true and not actual preorder sell. The iPhone 4S was 4million SOLD in the first weekend. Once they sell all 9million update us. To me this seems like overdoing it, it's a great phone but not 9 million. The HTC ONE X is already discounted and if they can't sell most of the stock of the G3 they will be left w a bunch of devices to clearance out.

Well played sir, well played. A good sarcastic response to drive the point home that Apple is just another commodity brand, available to all and sold in a Wal-mart near you!

Just like every other "this phone/tablet will outdo iPhone" I'll believe it when I see it.

Considering Samsung have had a lot of success with the line-up already (the S2 may not have had "iPhone" level sales, but they did sell 5 million in less than 90 days when they introduced it), we've already seen it.

Let's face it, Samsung is now the top phone vendor (smart vs dumb) and they are pretty much on top for smartphones too. They are for all intents and purposes Apple's current competition (is it any wonder Apple's legal department is so focused on them ?).

So let's not keep our heads in the sand here, please.

I did not read the article, don't have time at the moment, but how many countries is this releasing in? The 4S was just a handful at initial launch. While it really makes no difference to me how many Samsung sells vs. Apple, numbers can be spun a lot of different ways to make even the dismal look promising.

As the late, great Steve Jobs asserted, Android just copied iOS. And Samsung just copied the iPhone. Samsung was more than content to carry on copying had Apple not started suing them. That forced them to make (ugly) cosmetic changes to the physical design and appearance as well as whichever fragmented version of Android their phones would run.

Sure, Samsung may sell more (though if you read the article, the pre-orders are based on carrier demand based on "mostly customer demand, but with some buffer". Exactly how much buffer, no-one knows), but Samsung is selling basically to people who don't want an Apple product because they don't want to be seen as 1 of the masses. Ironic when you remember that not so long ago, people bought Apple products so they would be seen to be different.

In any case, Apple and iOS still provide a much better experience for me than any Android I've tried. And with its closed ecosystem and tightly-controlled App Store, I feel a little safer with the apps I download, whereas I know for a fact that on Android, someone is spying on me. I just pray my information is not valuable enough to sell.

So for those of you who like your Samsung, hooray for you! Go out and celebrate, paint the town red! Enjoy your copycat, spyware-ridden device.

As for those of us happy with our iOS devices, we will sleep peacefully knowing that ours is the original and still the best, and no-one is spying on us.

It takes between 3-5 million just to fill Samsung's retail chain, so this is a good start for them

Seriously! It's the Daily Mail. That paper is good for nothing but toilet paper...it's a sensationalist rag with a poor relationship with good-taste and accurate journalism.

It was tongue in cheek, but apple is a high profit brand, luxury or not.

They don't need to sell the highest number of devices with 40% margins.

Have you seen the share of mobile handset profits lately? Between apple and samsung, they have 99% of the profit in the handset market. And of that I believe apple is about 75%...

And as to the sheep "go apple". I'm not that person. I use stuff I like. I don't care how well it sells (which i guess was the other side of my point. sales numbers: don't care).

I like the iPhone. I've played with several android handsets and haven't found anything I like as much as iOS yet. On paper spec is great on them. But android just is not as polished or as tight (code efficiency wise) as iOS is.

I don't care that i can download and run anything off the internet. Having been dealing with computer security as a job for the past 15 years, I consider that to actually be a BAD thing for a mobile handset. Plus, the handsets feel cheap. Crappy plastics, battery cover that falls off jerky scrolling, etc....

The "enable users to run code from anywhere" security model is broken. Its a hangover from the pre-internet age. As someone who has to support a fleet of phones, i'd rather not go down that road again. i've been there, done that with Windows administration.

The Nexus is what turned me to android, although I will probably skip this upgrade since my Nexus is doing its job fine. Samsung really has been making some impressive phones.

My fiance uses my iPhone 4 which is also still working great.

All the same source....

Sounds like BS to me but to be fair I don't really care too much.

I thought your problem was with the Daily Mail? Now you've got issues with the source being quoted?

For someone who doesn't care, you're certainly dancing around the subject.

Seems to be the SOP for many around here. If it is not Apple and good news or beats Apple then it is scream bad sources or it is crap. If Apple it can and will be from a truly crap source and as long as it is good the it must be true.

Thing is about this Samsung one the facts are easy to back check to see if it is in the ball park so with all the big media sources saying something it points to be true

Yeah, i have many issues with the Daily Mail but you providing other sites seems that they all point to the same source.

Not having a go its just the story doesn't seem any more viable then it did with just the Daily Fail linked.

So Apple never copied anyone either? Does the xerox GUI ring a bell? You know for a FACT? Do you understand the definition of fact? And Apple data mines too by the way, but I guess you like Apple so much you have no problem with that.

And really using an Android is like using your laptop. If you're smart about what you install on your phone, you won't have any problems. Remember all those OS X security issues a while back and the flashback trojan? I seem to remember everyone dismissing it as a non issue and telling people to use some common sense and not click on suspicious links or download suspicious files. Same concept here, except it's Samsung.

Original? You care about being original so much? Tell me what exactly is the brand of your car? Is it a Ford? Oh and best is subjective :)

Is that 9 million carrier pre-orders or from actual human beings?

iPhone 4S:
* sold only in a few countries during launch
* pre-orders are only to end customers

Shady Samsung
- pre-orders are from 100 carriers (aka channel stuffing)

The Galaxy line are good phones. If you prefer the iPhone, that's all good but that doesn't automatically make the Galaxy junk.

I'm glad Android finally has a product line with strong brand recognition that a lot of people are getting excited about. Before the Galaxy it was just a million different flavor of the month phones.

The smartphone industry needs that type of competition. Apple needs the motivation. Personally I think their latest iPhone and iPad refreshes have been underwhelming - just a new processor and camera, tweak the screen, screw with the form factor. SIRI has potential but they haven't done much with it. If the main selling points of the iPhone 5 are a bigger screen and a new docking connector, I'll be disappointed.
