That’s...not even a little true.

Anyway, Note 9 is...meh. It’s a good phone, no doubt. But unless you need an insane amount of storage and/or the s-pen, there is zero reason to get this over the S9 Plus. I’m not seeing any compelling differences.
the iPhone is a status symbol in todays shallow world. It has been for quite some time. There have been so many articles on it.....Just google it.

New research indicates that owning an iPhone and an iPad indicates towards being a ‘high-income’ individual.

I think the N9 is good upgrade over the S9. First the S-Pen...then the huge battery and improvement in the Samsung skin is worth it alone. I think the cameras are the same hardware wise but the N9 has a little more software optimizations.
Then if you like bigger phones the N9 is huge!

It’s not. Googling “iPhone” and “status symbol” of course gave you articles that argued such, one of which is from 2014. The phone is far too prevelant to be a status symbol.

Samsung Experience is virtually unchanged.

If you don't think the iPhone is a status symbol, look no further than every teen in America asking their parents to buy them an iPhone because their friends have one.

That's a child though. They always want the latest whatever it may be because their friends have one. And if an adult believes owning one improves their social status, they've got issues.

Haha fair point. Maybe that wasn't the best example, but I do believe a good amount of folks in this world, even adults, buy the iPhone for social status. 100%.

I believe what sparked this conversation though was when someone said the Note9 was a status symbol because it was the latest and greatest. Yeah - that's not true whatsoever.

Lol, actually there's been recent articles as well as anecdotes from last year from our own MR forum members indicating, at least among the Millennial age group, that it can be harmful to one's social life and ability to attract dates if you go with Android. I don't pay a whole lot of heed to what passes for journalism these days, but I do pay attention to the concerns voiced by the young people on this forum.

Ah, but why are we bothering with this anyway. This thread is composed of adults of all ages who just love tech and all its many "flavors" and we buy what suits us.

Not all of us will think the Note 9 is appealing. But for those who are interested, this is the place to be!

Changing gears for a moment, I found out my Fitbit Charge 2 is NOT officially supported on the S9+ and looking at compatibility lists for the upcoming Charge 3, Note 9 is not mentioned there either, nor is anything past S7 Edge, if I remember correctly.:(

One reason I got the Charge 2 at all was to break away from Apple a little bit for wearables. I had been using it with my iPhone 8 Plus and enjoyed it very much. I had assumed it would work on the Samsung flagships but with all the stuff going on in my life hadn't gotten around to testing the Charge 2 with my S9+ Well, surprise, I guess that is the danger of assuming anything these days.

I'm very disappointed because I was very enthusiastic about the Fitbit Charge 3 and seeing how it works with the Note 9. My goal is always to work toward being completely capable of being independent of iPhones, even if I decide to keep using them. I want to be using iPhones because I want to, not because I'm stuck having to.

Anyway, I thought the Charge 3 would be a wonderful cross platform option for wearables. I guess I'll have to see if Fitbit updates their official list. When I get home I'll have to see if my Charge 2 can work with my S9+ despite there being no official support.

Sad sigh. Even when I think I've broken out of the ecosystem, I haven't really. In the USA the prevalence and dominance of iPhone makes itself felt outside of Apple offerings in many and sometimes subtle ways. It can be rather daunting for those of us who crave independence and a wider array of options.

That's both true and sad!

I'm still half tempted by the Note. But I love the camera on my Pixel too much. And if I don't get the Pixel 3, I'll probably wait to see if the S10 is the big change people are expecting (extra cameras, underscreen FPS etc).

I have noticed since downloading Android P that my Pixel stutters now and then. I don't know if it's because of the OS in general or the lack of ram compared to the Note. Be a while before we find out if the Note handles it better.

Well, had the note 9 24hrs now. Really happy with it up to now. The s9 plus has gone back under the return period with no charges.

I opted for the full fat 8g ram model and it's not a massive or even noticeable difference over the s9 plus in performance but there wasn't much difference in price so why not. I much prefer the bigger and more square screen of the note.

The pen hasn't even been taken out yet!

On a different point, hardly anybody I've spoken to has been aware or cares that there's a new note out so imo status symbol it ain't.

On subject of the new watch. In the UK it comes with the new duo charger, which I will be buying anyway,, so with my s3 sold or traded in, the new watch only costs me roughly £100

Must resist, must resist......
[doublepost=1535226045][/doublepost]How is battery life for e everybody (exynos model)?

I'm at 4hr 7 mins screen on time with 34% remaining and have been on 4g /LTE all day.

Not sure how that compares really

Well those are your opinions and I respect that we can differ in opinion.

Then if you google something and it has no facts or data behind it....you would get zilch...nada...nothing. The fact that there are a great deal of articles written about the iPhone being a status symbol definitely says a lot.

Then...they have been making iPhones since 2007 so of course there will be articles from years ago and it reenforces my point....

FOLKS, THE BIXBY BUTTON CAN BE REMAPPED.

I downloaded bxactions from the Play Store and now it's mapped to Google Assistant.
Thank You! The button has been remapped!

Does it require anything more than downloading the app? It used to require permissions sorting from a PC iirc

Listen, here’s the thing: I don’t know what status is being symbolized by a product available everywhere, and can be purchased on installments.

So far, I'm loving this phone, which is great as I was really disappointed in the Note 8. Performance has been fantastic, It does feel a little better in the hand, the screen is fantastic, signal strength is good, and battery life has been great.

It has a ton of features, and most are very well polished, other than Bixby, I can't really say that any one of the "gimmicks" is undercooked. Dex is my new favorite feature.

Seriously,my only gripes are that I wish it had no top or bottom bezels (like the iPhone X), and that it had a flat screen. Other than that, it's as close to a perfect phone as you can get. (other than not having iOS ecosystem).

The iPhone is most certainly a status symbol. I know one guy who knows nothing about tech but owns an iPhone for that very reason, he looks down at my Android phone like I got it from a Chinese knock off store. Also have a look in any of the "why do you choose an iPhone over Android" threads on this site and look at the amount of people that flat out say they choose it as its a status symbol.

Not just the phone but the apps as well. I read some people won't date or mingle with other people if they don't have the blue bubble when messaging. Crazy

Maybe if you are young and these sorts of things are important to you. I am in my 50's. Status never crossed my mind. My co-workers and many clients use a mix of Apple and Android. Never felt one was better than the other, or the people who used them were of higher social and or economic standing. In other words I have never thought that a person who has an iPhone must be wealthy, desirable, smart, popular, or good looking.

If someone does have the latest and the greatest and I am not familiar with it I will ask them about it, but again does not change my perception of them whatsoever.

Agreed 100%. When I see people with the latest and greatest it makes me feel good about being the nerd I am. :D

All of the iphone owners I know certainly don't consider it a status symbol.
.
A couple are hardcore Apple users, the rest are just comfortable with them none would see it as a status thing.

Anyone impressed by another person because of thier phone needs to take a long good look at themselves

I don't think I've ever heard any of my iphone friends talk down an android user, that's the behavior of insecure fools, we all know some, who try so hard to make anothers choice seem wrong somehow.
I know theres a lot of this type of person in the world but try to be better than them and don't dwell of others menial choices, it's not like choosing an iphone/android is the same as supporting a facist dictator or condoning something immoral.

Some people need to get a life.

What's everyone here using for display protection so far? I would not use any, but I don't know if the S-Pen will scratch the display and I do plan to keep this phone the full year, and possibly two.

I don't have my Pixel 2 on Pie. I like it exactly where it's at on Oreo. No lag, no battery drain. Honestly, Google is taking this copying of Apple too far with that crap. ;) Though I am happy to say my last few iOS updates have worked out just fine and for once I have no complaints about my iPhones. I don't talk about them much and haven't ventured on the forum at large, but I do love my iPhone 8 Pluses.

I'm going to stay clear of Google this year. I know Samsung is slow on updates, but if the updates they do get manage to ensure continued stability and smooth functioning, they will keep me on their hook.

While I never warmed up to my S8+, I have a friend who says hers has been rock solid. So I like where Samsung is trending so far.

I'm not using any protection right now. o_O

I may get a Peel case if they release one. I added Premium Care to my purchase through Samsung, so I'm not too worried. I usually like to go naked with all of my devices. I did get the brown leather case for my X though because it's so nice when it gets a good patina over time. Maybe I'll try and find a relatively slim leather case for this one.

I believe that the iPhone (To many people but not me in particular) is a status symbol. I have a good friend who bought the top model iPhone X the day it came out for no other reason than the status of having the top of the line model on day 1. Sounds dumb to me but a reality for many people.

Spent about 2 hours playing with my Note today. Definitely a lot of good features but some things just feel downright clunky compared to the iPhone. I use 1Password and the auto fill feature on android is terrible imo not to mention that the Samsung browser doesn’t support it.

Another thing that’s really pissing me off is that Google assistant will not read calendar appointments off of my family calendar (created through setting up my family group). Maddening especially since both Alexa and Siri can do this.

I’m also finding home automation management kind of a pain on android. HomeKit gives me an excellent widget to quickly turn on and off my devices. The SmartThings widget as well as the notification panel widget is terrible. Google home home automation is nice voice wise but I like having buttons on my phone that I can press

Most of these issues are Android issues as opposed to Note issues. As far as the actual Note goes, I’m loving the camera, loving the screen, loving the S pen, and loving a lot of other little things the Note does.

Just gotta love Android a little more in order to keep it.
