Well Awsomesince, camera is the major selling point of the s20 and if its not doing a good job then you paid a hefty price.

Had a family event today and the first time I really put the Ultra camera to use in a situation where I really wanted pictures of the occasion. It did average at best.

I got a few really good, crisp shots at medium zooms and a couple good shots with the primary lens. Others it failed to focus properly and smoothed out the faces. And on a few moving objects it was unusable.

I really hope the first major camera update drops this coming week or else ill have a tough decision on my hands. I want to keep the phone but the camera isn't good enough to justify the price as it currently stands.

I can say with certainty after going back to the iPhone 11 Pro that’s the difference is night and day. And I know you’re a Pixel user, and would have the same reaction.

Samsung’s biggest failure is that they failed to fix some of the nagging software issues before adding a bunch of features, and then have even more issues popping up. Horrible rollout on what is am awaiting phone otherwise.

After reading this thread and seeing reviews online etc, I'm definitely glad I didn't pre order the Ultra.

I'm sure some of the issues with the camera can be sorted with updates but it looks like Samsung failed to test everything fully beforehand. Not liking hearing they still employ a degree of skin smoothing, or the shallow depth of field that makes it more difficult to get everything in focus.

Looks a great phone, but from what I've seen so far, I wouldn't see enough value in the near £800 I'd have to spend after selling my Note. Samsung want to hope Google don't start upping their hardware game to match the first class software!

Seems like i'm actually lucky not getting mine dispatched for another 20 days. Hopefully gives Samsumg enough time to release an update to resolve these issues within that time.

It’s a tough decision but for £1400 you shouldn’t need to wait for an update. Is anybody convinced they will fix these issues? I don’t think it’s really as easy and simple as you would think. Fingers crossed it is

It's not down to just the camera for me. This phone beats every other phone in just about every other way. But I understand the argument that for $1400 it should. The question will come down to is it worth almost double the Pixel 4 XL that I would be keeping. In a lot of ways it is but the camera is definitely worse.

Also it's worth adding that in a lot of cases it already beats the Pixel and iPhone cameras. It's best photos are better than their best photos. But it struggles with consistency.

I'm not worried about the autofocus because I know a patch will fix that. I'm worries about the face smoothing because that's clearly a choice they've made.

You dont sound happy in many ways just return it and focus on Note 20. I think everything will be sorted out by then.

I understand you're a Note fan

Not really, N10+ is my first Note phone. I am loyal S series fan and i still have my s6, s7e and s9+ but N10+ surpassed my predictions and can't be happier.

All am saying is if you pay $1400 for a phone you must be happy 110%.
[automerge]1583718411[/automerge]
By the way i was going to return my N10+ for minor audio , connection and wide angle issues but that was quickly fixed with successive updates.

Unfortunately no phone is going to impress in every single category to people on here that frequently switch flagship phones. And frankly I don't expect it to. But for $1400, in my opinion, a phone should have no weak points and should have some areas where it's best in class. The Ultra accomplishes that but the camera is lagging. My decision on whether or not to keep it isn't if I think it's a good phone. I think it's easily the best phone currently available. I'm trying to decide if it's $500 dollars better than the Pixel 4 xl or something else I would use if I decided to return it.

Still not sure on that. If I switched back to the Pixel 4 XL I would get a better camera experience, better form, better biometrics, better software. But I would also be accepting worse battery, worse camera options, worse video recording, worse display, less storage, slower storage, no 5g, etc. So it's something I'll have to weigh and decide. Let's just say if the camera on this was more consistent, it wouldn't be much of a decision.

I tried to find one single weakness about Note10+ i couldn't. In fact, i got more than i bargained for to be honest in terms of looks, power, price , speed, reliability, you name it.

Like i said many times before i was sold from the first few seconds i saw the phone.

I think one of the reasons why preorders for the ultra are low because too many people like and bought Note10 and i am a good example.
[automerge]1583725184[/automerge]
If that applied to cars, every purchase would be a return.

If you are talking of Lada's yes for sure they all will be returned :)

Discoloration issue too with orange dots please click above. I think Jamez did smart move to get the 20+.
I skipped this gen of smartphones as i was happy with my note 10+ and it seems i made a good decision. I really like Samsung phones but the camera in the Ultra is unacceptable in its current state. I really don't like iOS at all but im jealous of the Camera setup and software in the 11 Pro Max and wish Samsung would pay attention!!!

I took the iPhone and S20 out on a ride in the country. My frustration in trying to compare them is that I would press the shutter “button” simultaneously on both, but the S20 was slower to lock on and focus and take the shot. So it was lagging behind a second and in a moving car that means the scene changes. So it was hard for me to compare them. The iPhone rarely took a blurry shot but the S20 took a few. It was hard conditions for both phones but I wanted it that way.

I never noticed the shutter lag on the S20 until today. But then I haven’t really been trying to test it. I’m still setting up. And helping my family prep for Covid since it’s starting to get around where we are.

I’m honestly not worried about the cameraIt takes really nice 4K 60fps video in crappy light so I’m happy. It’s my secondary phone. And I paid around $600 for my Note 10+, then am getting $700 in trade for it, so am getting this phone for $365, so I don’t have the same criteria as everyone does with their Ultras.

Everything NOT connected with photography or the fingerprint sensor is aces on this phone, so it’s a keeper. I do like it better than my Note 10+. And I really like my Note 10+ a lot.

Hearing some mixed results about the first big camera update. Its only being released in Korea so far but early word is face smoothing is improved and hybrid zoom is better (not sure why this was a priority). However, there are mixed results on whether autofocus has improved or not.

If the first camera update doesnt improve autofocus, I'll probably return the Ultra. Because to me, that says that still cant figure out how to focus reliably in the software with the narrow depth of field.

Also, I have to say, I am still not used to the size of this phone. I feel like I acclimated to the Pro Max weight pretty quickly because even though its wider and heavy, its balanced. The Ultra is just too damn top heavy and because its also tall the weight is compounded. Its the first phone I get hand fatigue with using one-handed which I never thought I would say as I have pretty big hands.

I know it sounds like I hate this phone, but in reality its great. But for $1400 I think you have to nitpick the negatives. If I were to go back to my Pixel 4XL that I got for $650 then I am much more willing to overlook the battery and bad video recording for that price.

Yeah I'm not sure why Samsung hasnt adopted the technique that Google and now Apple use where they basically take advantage of the hdr algorithm that is always taking pictures even before you press the shutter. Google just uses the shutter button to "pick" the picture thats already being taken at that moment. I believe Apple now do something similar. Unless its a patent issue, Samsung have no excuse not to do the same.

How does burst shot work on the S20 vs. iPhone? It's been bugging the heck out of me that they changed the camera button hold to video capture on iPhone, with burst shot being assigned to a stupid slide manoeuvre that always fails at crucial moments. (Can't find a way to change that, please anyone let me know if there's a way and I'm just being dumb.) Burst shot is the perfect thing to have available on the fly, whereas I almost always find myself with plenty of time to prepare when I want to film something.

Samsung's Galaxy S20 Ultra is more durable than you think

Android Central: Samsung's Galaxy S20 Ultra is more durable than you think.

Honestly I never put much into those durability tests unless there are glaring issues like with the original Galaxy Fold. Glass sandwich phones can only be so durable. I'll continue to slap a minimal case on all my phones with enough protection to save my back and screen from a moderate drop.

Btw, how are you liking the Ultra? Especially compared to your Pro Max and Pixel 4 XL. Keeping all 3?

I still think holding the shutter button is a lot more intuitive than Samsung's swipe to take burst shots. IMO, Apple nailed it with hold for burst and swipe and hold to initiate video from the photo screen.

On iPhone you have to slide to the left to take burst shots. Press and hold starts video.

At least on last year's iPhones. I found a site saying that on 2018 models and older you can still hold for burst shot but that doesn't make sense to me since it's a software thing.

So it's slide for burst shot on Samsung?

I'll have to pull my Pro Max back out but I'm 90% sure that sliding the shutter button starts video recording now.
