I've had every iPhone since the 4 and have never used or seen how to use App Library 🤣.
It's the opposite of what Apple was supposed to stand for in iOS. Keep it simple. Instead it's an ever changing list of folders that you can't edit. The best part is that it's machine learning, so one day the folder might be the first one listed, but the next day it might move. Hope you don't rely on muscle memory!

Umm.. I don’t believe iOS 17 is going to be heavy on new features.

yeah I agree... I mean I've not read much about it one way or the other and of course the keynote will have 10million "new" features, but I can't see it being much of a good year for features.

hope I'm wrong though

I've just been androided :) had to help someone on their iphone and normally I'd be 100% fine and zip zapping along but after a few weeks on the S23ultra, I heard myself say "omg where are the settings for this app, oh god it's an iphone isnt it, I'll have to go find the different settings app.. makes no sense argh"

As I'm known as the apple fanboi, I did get laughed at.

There was a time not that long ago that iOS was rock solid. In fact on my iPhone 13 Pro Max before iOS 16 the device was pretty amazing. Much better battery life than any Android phone. I never experienced a bug I can remember since I got it new. I loved that phone for as long as I had it.

I was extremely happy when Apple added the app drawer. Coming from Android before the iPhone 11 my ex wife always had iPhones. She would tell me to open such and such app and I asked, "where is it?" Because she has a lot of apps. Pages of them and there was no order to them at all. At least with the App drawer I could put a couple of pages of my most used apps on my main screen and another page and everything else would go in the drawer instead of endless pages of apps.

On Android since I can remember we had the app drawer and you could put it in alphabetical order so it was always easy to find an app.

Settings is another odd thing in iOS. I won't even go into it. But once you get used to how iOS works you can figure it out but I will say Android settings are a little better, specially on a Pixel. Samsung used to be really confusing and still has a lot of sub menus for settings that gets a little confusing but it is a lot better now. At least with Samsung you can adjust almost anything.

At the end of the day both iOS and Android have their strengths and weaknesses. Both are good mobile operating systems. It is just that I think a lot of us got used to the laser focus on stability that Apple has had for years. Sure a new release on any OS will have some bugs but after a month or two Apple would correct them. Now it seems that focus has blurred a bit. They are trying to add new features but are missing the mark on stability.

In terms of hardware beyond the thermal performance Apple design has been iconic and copied heavily throughout the Android OEM's.

One of the reasons I love the s23 ultra is that it is clearly not a copy of an iPhone in any way. The s23 ultra is a big rectangular phone. It has an spen. Buttons all on one side. It is clearly a Samsung phone.

Trends are funny. I loved curved displays when Samsung first introduced them. It looked so cool. Then the reality set in besides kind of looking cool they actually don't add any benefits to the user and make the screen more fragile.

With Apple the curved corners looked so cool. Starting with the iPhone 12 the straight edge design looked so cool. But once you use the phone for a while those edges get uncomfortable. The curved corners on the display are a waste of usable space. Unfortunately almost every Android OEM copied the rounded corners design.

Once you use an ultra you see the benefits of the square corners right away.

I don't want to just criticize Apple because I still like a lot of their products but the iPhone starting with the 14 just took a direction I wasn't happy with. I mean the purple iphone is pretty sick looking design wise. That color is really nice. If you have ever seen the internals of an iPhone it is assembled like art.

BUT now segmentation in the iPhone product line is increasing when it should simplify. The regular iPhone and pros are becoming more delineated which is not good for consumers. The 14 was the first to use a year old chip in a brand new phone. I could see this in the SE but the regular iPhone series should all use the latest chip. This is a big deal. All iPhones used to have the same design just different sizes. The regular 14 has a notch but the pro has the cut out (not sure if the cutout is better but it is newer design). No promotion on the regular 14 but the Pro has it. Better camera on the Pro. And so on. Like the iPhone 14 was literally the same phone as the 13 with just a few minor, minor differences. I don't know why anyone would buy it? Then you have the max which I would have liked if it didn't start at $900. The max is just a hundred dollars less than the Pro with a new chip, better cameras, Promotion, and notchless design. And now there are rumors Apple wants to add an ultra iPhone above the Pro Max?! Like are they insane? So we may end up with an iPhone, iPhone Max, iPhone Pro, iPhone Pro Max and iPhone Ultra and of course a new iPhone SE? All Apple needs to sell is the SE, Pro and Pro Max. Drop the Pro naming. 3 phones. Lower the price on the Pro. Keep the Pro Max the ultra premium phone and keep the SE affordable for everyone else.

Stop eliminating stuff we like like SIM tray, headphone jack(long gone now) regular tactile buttons, power adapter, etc.

Apple used to be simple but the product segmentation has infected the entire product stack. I blame Tim Apple for this. Trying to extract as much money from the consumer. Jobs may not have been perfect but he understood that you keep things simple and you offer the best in all your products and don't intentionally hold back features, you do the opposite within a simple product line and you charge accordingly. This is what made Apple great. Their products were always expensive but you knew that you were getting a generally superior product. You pony up your cash to enter into Apple and Apple delivered for the most part. Now it is a confusing mess where every device is crippled in some way to upsell you to the most expensive.

I am sorry for the long, long post about mostly Apple in the s23 thread but I think it is important to say because it is an amalgamation of so many things that I think are driving people away from Apple.

Sure Samsung started the Ultra and offering an Uber expensive phone and they try to upsell you as well but it is just not as bad. I mean the only difference between the s23, s23 + and the ultra are full hd vs quad hd and cameras, and ram. BUT you get 120hz, same basic design, and the entire s23 line is solid and new. The s22 and s23 are different phones in several ways and the s23 is a big improvement over the s22. You get a better chip, better bigger battery, better selfie camera, new outer design while the iPhone 14 is an iPhone 13.

And Samsung offers a lot in their budget phones. The a54 is a pretty decent phone. The current SE is a dinosaur.

Okay let's get back to the s23 series as regularly scheduled. 😂 Lol

All great points. I don't, however, understand the hoopla over QHD or higher displays. I am not at all offended that the S23+ is "only" 2340 x 1080. I can't see pixels and the display looks more crisp than my 14 Pro Max. I just get amused when I read elsewhere that people get up in arms over a 6" phone screen resolution.

The bigger issue I have noticed is refresh rate. The iPhone does not feel like 120hz when swiping through apps or scrolling in Safari. I thought I saw somewhere that Apple limits the refresh rate to 80-ish hertz during regular / daily use? The S23+ is substantially smoother and faster when scrolling or switching through apps, it feels like what 120hz should feel like.

You are correct that it is hard to notice until you use a higher resolution screen side by side. And Samsung displays look really good. Heck I bet most people wouldn't even notice 720p? I had an iPhone 11 with close to a a 720p LCD display and I could not tell it wasn't a higher resolution. I actually really liked that LCD panel. One of the best LCD panels I have ever used on a phone. On the 6" s23 I don't think it is an issue but the plus should at least have 2k resolution in my personal opinion.

In terms of the high refresh rate all modern phones have an adaptive refresh rate meaning they adjust the frequency depending on what you are doing. That being said I do notice that the s23 and my Pixel seem to be more aggressive at ramping up the refresh rate depending on what I am doing and I like that. I mean what is the point of having a Promotion or 120hz if it is ramping the rate down to save battery which gives a poorer experience to the user? Might as well just be set at 60hz.

Ive read everyone's little observations about ios and Apple today. I guess we all must have woke up on the wrong side of the Apple Fritter this morning, because I was really feeling ranty myself. I made some pointed comments on the main part of the forum. I think several of the news articles really triggered me.

So many of you made fantastic points and articulate rants. I guess we are all picking up on how this isn't the Apple we knew.

And it's all coming home to me in holding this S23 Ultra. And as happy as I am about how much I enjoy this phone, I'm a bit worried about what is going on with Apple. They're becoming the convoluted mess Steve Jobs warned about. Apple now reflects more on Warren Buffett's influence on Tim Cook than that of Steve Jobs. That's not to say Apple/iPhones suck. I'm very pleased with my iPhones and my Apple watch.

But some things are fraying at the seams. They really need to stop throwing money at Hollywood and China, if that means they can't or won't invest in manpower at Cupertino to fix all these infuriating bugs and user interface issues.

I'm super extra exhausted so I'm not going to be able to articulate anything coherent going forward.

But I wanted to say I had a chance to eat out last night and I had my 14 Pro Max and my S23 Ultra and took photos of my family at the restaurant and I was shocked at how closely matched the results were from both phones.

It was a completely different result from the outdoor photos I posted recently. I can't post them here because the photos have my family and other people in them. But suffice it to say both results were excellent and I can't pick a favorite. They're really shockingly close. I was expecting more of a difference after what I saw of the rabbit photos.

I wish I could do some more outdoor photos, but between my schedule and the weather being absolutely insane, I haven't had a chance.

@Technerd108 I also am interested in seeing how the Pixel 8/Pro turns out. My migraine issues might lock me out of upgrading my Pixel 6 Pro but it's the phone I'm most interested in.

I'm staying put on my 14 Pro Max.

You all would be surprised how much I still use my S22 Ultra. I know I am.

Well, I couldn't do the S23 Ultra. I won't go into great detail and explain a hundred percent of my reasoning, I doubt any of you honestly care, but ultimately, I wasn't a hundred percent happy with it even after a few weeks - month of settling into it, customizing, tweaking, etc. Long story short, a lot of my displeasure with the phone boils down to the software. I tried different launchers, I was deep in Good Lock customizations, and I disabled / uninstalled a lot of the extraneous features. I even tried to use the Samsung variants of services / applications rather than going for the Google variants, which looked incredibly improper in One UI.

Now, before I disappoint anyone, I'm letting you all know that I didn't run back to the LG V60, sorry. 😰 I picked up the Pixel 7 on sale from Best Buy ($450 unlocked) and I've been using that for about a week now. I'm really enjoying the Pixel and Material You. The fingerprint scanner is atrocious, but the face unlock picks up that slack pretty well. The Pixel provides the software simplicity and feel that I was looking for.

The s22 ultra is a still a great phone. The 8 Gen 1 is no slouch. It is just kind of amazing in one year the difference.

Don't even get me started on the manufacturing over seas.

Yeah, the Pixel 8 has great potential so let's see what happens and hopefully it has a better screen for you than the 7.

So every year I try the latest iphone (my daily driver and default go to), the latest samsung and the latest pixel.

For many years I've felt that the iphone was the best put together, nicest consistent experience. Samsung the worst (with its slow updates, duplicate apps and android overlay) and pixel my natural android choice.

This year, I feel like Apple has dropped the ball somewhat. It's more buggy than I've experienced in a long time and unexcitingly boring. The pixel pro was great as it is for me every year! It feels like the apple of android for me, logical since google control both the hardware and software. Everything on the Pixel punches beyond its weight IMHO, from cpu/gpu to the camera (which is always good and sometimes absolutely stunningly good).

The s23u though is a home run for me this year. It's the first year that everything has come together and oneUI rather than annoy me, actually gives me more customisations than the pixel. Add to that the spen and 10x optical, it's my choice this year.

I still feel like my Android spiritual home would be a pixel ULTRA if they ever make one.

I'm just about to receive an S23 Ultra from my company; I'm seriously considering selling my IP 14 PM as I do not need 2 flagship phones and I'm both an Android and iOS fan...

Looking forward to getting my hands on the S23U TBH and if I sell the iPhone, then it'll be c£1k back in my back pocket that I can sit on and wait for the iPhone 15 Pro Max (or whatever incarnation they release it as) ;)

Decisions, decisions...

Very much in agreement...

The P7P for me is a superb phone; but it just feels a bit 'lacking'. However, can't put my finger on what... I was massively impressed with its zoom capabilities on the camera though!

The IP 14 Pro Max is a fantastic phone; but too 'same' as the 13 Pro Max (which I sold for the P7P and then slightly regretted it)

I think the S23U is going to be THE device this time round...

But as you said; if they did a Pixel Ultra or 'Plus' variant, that and the appeal of Vanilla Android would very hard to beat

Oh I think most of us care. You gave it a fair go and it was interesting to read your reasoning. I agree that Pixel has such a nice way to interact with the phone. I love Pixels. I’d still be using mine regularly if not for my ridiculously sensitive nervous system.

I wasn’t even frustrated in any way by my Pixel 6 Pro’s hardware. I did use it with no issues worth complaining about until using my 14 Pro Max display caused me to become sensitive to the 6 Pro display. Even so, I don’t consider the 6 Pro Display inherently problematic for people in general. I thought it was a nice display when I could still use it.

I’m jelling pretty well with One UI these days. My problem, and it’s only a problem for anyone who would listen to my opinion on these phones, is that I immediately subconsciously tune out most annoyances. And that’s a trait that would make me a terrible reviewer.

Honestly, I think that’s a trait I first developed as a doting aunt to a large family of nieces and nephews and their kids. Ignoring little boys screaming at the tops of their lungs while dressed as Ninja Turtles is a survival trait that somehow transferred into me just automatically working around irritating user interfaces. 🤣

So, often I do so many annoying multi step processes automatically that I can’t describe them to other people from memory. I’d have to get my phone and actually watch myself do whatever it is I was asked about and then describe it.

Google is good at making so many functions directly accessible, where in other operating environments the functions are buried and you need to go a few extra steps to make them automated or one touch away.

I usually just jump around between iOS and One UI and Google Android without really noting consciously how they’re different and how one annoys me and one appeals to me. But often, when I am on a Pixel, I find myself extra comfortable and happy. It’s the way I used to feel about iOS years ago.

I think these days iOS has become a lot like my and my husband’s bedroom. A lot of stuff just got shoved in there with the thought we will organize it when we get time and energy. And meanwhile we find ourselves stepping around more piles of things or furniture that aren’t in their optimal places. It’s become old and familiar but it’s not the best it could be.

At the end of the day it's preference ...you gave it a good try and One UI is not for everyone I understand that ...me personally I use all the Google apps and only use Samsung for notes Spen stuff ...I keep it simple and I feel this phone runs smoother than my Pixel 7 Pro but I do love the Pixel too haha
I've put mine up for sale but I still get the urges to keep it ..we shall see...
Btw that V60 is getting the last update I believe so glad ya not going that way hehe ...

But it's the holy grail phone according to one poster and is so phenomenal it should get updates forever!

I don't like One UI. Sure, it's feature packed and filled with numerous features that the Pixel or AOSP will never get, for example, but it's messy and cluttered for me.

Totally get it. One of the toughest things to get used to that I still struggle with is having 2 apps for photos. I prefer Google Photos but sometimes I need to use the Gallery app for something, which annoys the living hell out of me. Not a deal breaker but an annoyance for sure.

yeah this is a REAL pita :( do anything fancy with my spen etc and it's in the gallery app, but then I've got everything else set to save to google photos. Im sure I just need to spend a bit of time working it out but it sucks compared to the iphone "just works" photo/gallery experience

My biggest challenge is that if I want to share a photo to Facebook, I have to do it from the Google Photos app. Facebook takes me right to the Gallery app and then I have to sort through a bunch of phots and can't remember which ones I edited or marked as favorites.

So how do you Alternative to iOS users charge your phone? In order to keep battery health at a maximum do you have any particular habits or methods?

With my Pixel 7 Pro I can charge over night and adaptive battery that optimized the charging process for battery life.

With the s23u I turned off fast charging and would charge over night. However I got a warning that keeping the device plugged in for extended periods of time is not good.

So now I just wait until it gets down to 30-50% and charge slowly until it is full and just use it.

Since the battery life is similar to my iPhone 13 Pro Max I don't have the battery anxiety I am used to with phones.

For example in the past if my phone was at 50% I and I was going out for the day I was in trouble. Most phones would barely get me through half a day or so. With my iPhone I could confidently go out with 50% and not worry. Now with the s23u I feel the same way.

What do you do? Have your charging habits changed with this phone?

I never keep my phones more than a year so I use and abuse haha. But yeah, usually by the time if gets to 50% I throw it on the charger and bring it back to 100%. Anything under 50% and I have battery anxiety no matter what phone I'm using.
