I was looking at the DXOMark website and was baffled why in the global list the S23U is only joint 14th? How can that be as all the comparisons I’ve seen put it close to the top of the pile.
I notice indoors in artificial lighting my S23 Ultra tends to, on default settings, make light sources appear too bright and everything is just slightly too bright all around. And then color accuracy is still, I don’t want to say bad, but some color temperatures are off and too boosted. It can make for a pretty picture and a crowd pleaser nonetheless, but it may not meet their criteria to score higher in their rankings.
I haven’t really looked at DXOMark in a long time so I’ve probably forgotten a lot. I just go with what my own eyes tell me and my own tastes prefer.
Unfortunately because some of the colors ARE accurate but others aren’t and some are boosted and some aren’t, there isn’t any easy adjustment to be made in basic editing. You just either like the Samsung look or you don’t. Most of the time, I do. Sometimes, I’m annoyed.
For my iPhone 14 Pro Max default color style settings are a bit cold. Same for Pixel 7a (I keep adjusting color temps). And details are way way artificially over emphasized. I can just choose a warmer style and I generally do. I can’t fix the over contrasted over sharpened look with my tools and skill level and more importantly, my available time and energy!
Pixel 7a is my favorite of the 3 options I have available to myself. But lack of optical zoom and good digital zoom definitely show its mid range status. It’s a compromise plenty of people are willing to live with for the convenient size and weight and price (with deals and incentives).
I’ve been falling for the charms of the 7a enough to know I’m willing to give the 8 Pro serious consideration when it comes out. I don’t need a pervert zoom on it. I just need what I had on the 6 Pro back. I don’t like the large size of the Pro level phone but if the display is flat and doesn’t give me migraines I’ll bite.
