I have an iP8 + and an Pixel 2 XL and a S9+...funny cause there are more reported problems for iphones than any other phones...... did you comment on those issues? I guess Apple doesn't test either.....

PS Had the IPX and returned it thought it was not ready for prime time. FaceID was buggy.....

I only mentioned what phone i had so you new i had a Samsung, not to debate between iPX and Sammy. Gee butt hurt or what, why are you bringing up iPhones anyway this is the S9 thread.

For what its worth i am not a fan of FID either but the plus is too big/heavy for my uses, so have stuck with it for now.

Sounds like you’re a little defensive.
So the 8 plus was too big but the Note 8 isn’t? I had the N8 til I upgraded to the S9+. Hated the FPS location on it.

I brought up the iPhones cause we get a ton of newbies that migrate over to the alternative section to put down Android and Samsung in particular.

So welcome to MR..... you will find a lot of us here in this section use both Android and IOS devices.

Not until i thought you came across that way :)

I mainly use the Note 8 at home/office as my second/personal phone, so not carrying around in my pocket like the X which is my business phone, I don't use the FPS on Note 8 andI actually turn off FID off on long trips in car as its useless in my brodit holder.

Ok

I have the X and can say IOS is the buggiest I can ever remember. IOS 12 is supposed to focus on internal improvements.

I agree... it is very not like Apple. They usually have more polish than that. It hopefully they get it fixed in IOS 12

I’m in the same boat on my second X never had so many crashes and problems. At the 1k price this is unacceptable

Always have used a screen protector but the tempered glass protector I have for my S9 is terrible. Always have to double and triple press, doesn't really mesh to the screen very well. I hope they have some better ones that come out soon since I had to take this one off. Well, I changed my case to a different one and it wouldn't stay on.
This is why I like the flat screens better than the edge for things like this. Id go without a screen protector but I don't have an office job and there is bigger chance of scratches and drops.

I bought both folio type cover cases that Samsung sells. I got the purple shiney one that Flossy Carter was showing off in his You Tube review that was posted to this thread several days ago. And I got the LED wallet case in blue. It has subtle purple banding so it goes well with the purple and blue phones. What I like about the Samsung folio cases is that they show time on or through the cover and they are very slim but still decently protective. They add almost no bulk to the phone.

But the shiney purple one shows fingerprints like crazy. Flossy wasn't kidding when he said the cover could be used as a mirror.

So far I haven't noticed anything weird that would indicate a qc issue with my phone. If I wasn't stuck in imessage hell I would put my main Sim in this and make it my primary phone because it's so much fun and the camera is near perfection. I have far less lens flare on this phone than I get with my iPhones from iPhone 7 plus inwards. I've had the X and now the 8 plus and they're pretty obnoxious about casting little green lens flare dots into so many of my pictures.

I don't doubt many people did get some wonky specimens. Goodness knows that's happened to me before with Samsung phones. But this year for the first time ever I ended up with the wonkiest damned iPhone I've ever seen. The display glass was inset crooked, which I went on to discover was a fairly common complaint. The lighting port was messed up somehow. I could charge the phone but not use it for the lightning earbuds. I had some other complaint about it.

My daughter reports non-stop issues with her iPhone 7 Plus. It seems the battery has degraded more rapidly than we could have ever anticipated. That was happening with my 7 Plus which is why I decided to just trade it in for wireless charging on the 8 Plus.

She and her friends are heavy users of group imessage chats and they tell me imessage with groups us beset with bugs. I haven't seen that, but the people I group chat with on imessage don't try to converse on it. We send small texts here and there to coordinate stuff. It suffices for that.

I was gonna go back to the note 8 but the s9 plus may well be my next phone. The iPhone X I’m not impressed with, I detest Face ID, I’ve had the phone since launch and would love to have a fingerprint sensor back.

If you still own a Note 8, hold onto it. It's not worth the cost to switch the S9+ with the Note 9 around the corner.

OK, so I will post some thoughts about the S9.
All I will say before you read any further is, I returned the S9 earlier and (reluctantly) went back to an iPhone X.

I really liked the S9, but it was apparent quite quickly that I wasn't going to get last long term with it for a few reasons.

Firstly, I like but I don't LOVE the design of the Samsung S series. It's certainly one of the better looking phones right now, and I like that there's no notch (kudos Samsung), but I just don't feel any sort of instant attraction to it like I do with other devices.

Putting to that to one side though, there are bits I loved about it. The back of the device is gorgeous, love the blue and even the pink is nice. Not fussed on black.

Finger print scanner is finally in a decent position, and worked flawlessly. Glad they re-positioned it.

The screen is a strange one for me. I didn't really like it. I find Samsung screens a little bit neon. Retina burning almost. It reminded me of the OG Pixel I had which was the same - way way too over saturated. Obviously, take my opinion with a pinch of salt as most people love Samsung screens and think they're the best around.
I like that they give you the option to choose a style of screen though. I went for 'basic' (I think it was called that) which muted everything slightly, albeit then a bit too much.

After I set everything up, I noticed some lag. Bear in mind I've been using a Pixel (well, Pixels :p ) since January and they are sensationally fast.
The lag wasn't anything crazy, and nothing to put me off the device, but it was there. Just the odd little stutter and stammer in certain apps and moving around the OS.

I quickly learned that I don't like the Samsung design language. The on screen navigation buttons for instance, and the Samsung app designs - that line design? I really don't like it.
I also didn't enjoy the actual app designs in the stock launcher. They're a bit all over the place unless you add the background to the apps, but then I didn't really like that either. App icon packs are pretty hard to come by for the stock launcher too.

This morning, I downloaded a Pixel 2 launcher, and I kid you not the lag I was seeing intermittently (and rarely) just vanished. I had zero lag and slow down manouvering round the phone with a different launcher. It also looked so so much better. I could then choose the style of my icons and I ended up with something I was much happier with.
That extended to the app 'drawer' / tray or list (whatever you want to call it!).
I almost didn't like how the app tray could be amended like an iPhone - and you could move apps to where you wanted in the stock launcher. An alphabetical list is more preferential for me.

The orange notification button was a bit in your face - especially over things like Spotify which just looked strange. I know you can turn these off app by app (again, thank you Samsung) but it was just an odd setup.

With the Pixel Launcher I got those lovely dots - which I didn't realise how much I liked until I had them back!

I also like my app drawer with a white background, and with a lighter wallpaper, the Pixel 2 launcher gave me that. So much cleaner. :)

Beauty of Android though - you can have what you want essentially!

Battery life was abysmal for me today. I got 3 and a half hours screen on time and I needed my charger at home time. It's not Pixel 2 levels of bad with the problems, but it didn't seem right. I know thats not the 'norm' for this device, but it's worrying. I didn't help myself by cranking the screen resolution up, turning off auto brightness and using it most of the day, but it seemed like the battery could have been a bit better.
Still, I had only used it with one full charge so I wouldn't take my experience as much here.

I did like lots about it though - it's not all doom and gloom haha.
When my battery was draining, I had a notification to say that Instagram was using more battery than it should and it gave me an option to then fix this. Very nice.

ATOUTxZ.jpg

Samsung's version of Android has some fantastic things thrown in. I don't think I even managed to scractch the surface with the additional benefits over stock but I will tell you my favourite thing and it almost made me keep te phone for it (you will all think it's crazy haha).
Listening to music. When I listen to music on my Pixel (or any other Android device), I detest the fact that the album artwork is not only then plastered all over your lock screen, but it's plastered in a magnified view which looks absolutely awful. I don't choose a nice lock screen wallpaper to have my music app (and it's all music apps - Spotify, Play Music etc) stretch the art work out over it.
It can't be turned off either, the only way around it is to disable all notifications for the app but then you lose the lock screen / notification tray playback controls.

Samsung though? Your lock screen wallpaper stays, and you just get the controls on it - along with the playback controls and artwork coloured box. THANK YOU SAMSUNG.
So so so much love for them doing this.

1g1fAsP.jpg

I hardly got to test the camera - sadly, as I didn't have it long enough. I took one snap just point and shoot on my walk back from the work canteen.

EZOmVrO.jpg

I only needed that to know that this was a truly fantastic camera. I know I'd have loved using this absolutely no question.

Then played about with the portrait style mode on my pink highlighter in the office lol.

I tried this AR emoji. Quite frankly - it's creepy. Creepy is a word I've heard a lot of tech reviewers use in relation to this. I can't help but agree.

Here's mine...

NdDOKeN.gif

In fairness, it kinda got the hair right, and the eye colour and the stubble, but it's a bit weird!

Other things I liked, well I love that in the stock launcher you can swipe down from the screen anywhere to get into the notification shade thing. Really love that. It's not a big phone, so I wouldn't struggle pulling down from the top, but why bother shifting my grip slightly when Samsung have built that in. Again, thanks Samsung. For a phone like the Pixel 2 XL, stock could benefit from that kind of thing.

As always, the Samsung store for themes, wallpapers etc was lovely. Rivalling Sony's Xperia store for me if not slightly better.
That's the kind of additional stuff I really like.

All in all, the phone is brilliant. I can see why people love Samsung phones and prefer them over other Android devices. For me though, whilst it's brilliant in packing itself with useful OS features and handy extras over stock, it then loses a certain polish that stock brings.
Whilst it has certainly made me look at stock Android a bit differently now and wishing there were more Samsung esque features in it, I still would choose that over what Samsung currently offer every day of the week. But that album artwork is a huge one. Whoever at Android thinks this is still a great option and won't provide users with the option to at least disable it, needs firing immediately.

I personally think I could have continued to use the S9 and grown to appreciate it much more. But rather than do that, and enjoy it until the next new Android came to then sell it, I've decided to go back to iOS with the X where I know exactly what I am getting and where I know I will be happy.

Ideally, I'd still be rocking my Pixel 2, but there we are! Sorry for the longish post, I wanted to at least try and explain my very short time with the S9 and note a couple of thoughts seeing as I've not been a Samsung user for a while. Sometimes it's good to read from differing perspectives I guess! :)

Appreciate the review/comparison.

The point about swiping down for Notifications from anywhere is a big thing Apple etc. need to implement...such a subtle change that will benefit many. First heard about it in the below in-depth review & wondered why others don't have it...

Respectfully disagree, I have the note8, just picked up a S9+. I love the upgrade. It is subtle, so I will give you that. But the improvements with camera, speed, battery, fingerprint sensor a slightly smaller size, are huge for me. It is weird regarding size....the s9+ in marginally smaller, but it feels so much smaller in hand vs the Note8.

Don't get wrong, the Note8 is an amazing device...but I do think there is a upgrade path for those users to the s9+

Very happy with my coral blue Galaxy S9+ (upgrading from a black Galaxy S7 Edge). Awesome screen-to-body ratio and a very nice, large display.

A few things I've noticed that I really like:

- The fingerprint scanner is amazingly fast. It's faster than on any other phone I've tried
- Facial recognizition works surprisingly fast and well
- Love the 2x zoom thanks to Dual Camera setup
- Very happy with stereo speakers: way louder than before and they sound much better too
- Dual Sim works surprisingly well, but probably won't use it too much

Currently using the Spigen AirSkin as my case. It's very thin so it barely adds any bulk. Looks pretty good, too!
I also ordered a 'Bare Naked Galaxy S9+ case', but since it's being shipped from the USA to Europe, it takes some time to get here. That's why I got the Spigen AirSkin (which I like so much, that I might not even try the Bare case).

And last but not least, managed to get a €150 discount on this device. Also the reason why I decided to get one, because the original €949 is too much.

Are you going to upgrade to the Note 9 and S10 saying similar things though?

I ordered the Air Skin after preordering my S9+, but through Amazon, it isn't shipped till the beginning of next month. I have a cheap case on right now till it's shipped.

I turned face/iris scan off... only using touch ID. Still haven't figured out how to stop my lockscreen from going to home screen when I look at it. I still need to see the date and time on my lockscreen... LOL..

I like the look of the Spigen Air Skin case but cannot see it available for the S9 in the UK (Amazon).

The current Spigen Thinfit suddenly feels bulky after seeing the Air Skin.

For those who say the battery life isn't as good on the S9+: Does the phone at least get about 5-6 hrs SOT and last all day under the Snapdragon 845? Is intelligent scan much faster than the Note 8 or S8/S8+ Iris Scanner or Facial Recognition?

I don’t know how to find the screen on time stats, oddly enough. I didn’t see that under the battery information. It’s not very scientific but just going by keeping my usage evenly matched as possible over the last 24 hours I was surprised to see my S9+ running about the same battery life as my iPhone 8 Plus and both charged up at close to the same rate when I used my iPad charger to fast charge my iPhone from 60% to 83%. I used the S8+ charger on the S9+.

I can’t sit and look at my phone a solid 5 to 6 hours but I’d estimate that over the course of a day I’m getting at least that much and probably more, especially since I’m playing games and reading books on it.

I'm getting 5+ hours of screen on time with my S9. Maybe could get 6 hours but I was at 20% with 5 hours and 15 and that's with using the navigation. My typical work day I still have 45-50% battery left when I plug it back in for the night.

Bixby sucks imo. I turned off the button and disabled the app. I was always hitting the button when I didn't want it on and I still think Google asst is way better.

Device Maintenance, Battery, Battery usage then select screen.

That will give you your screen on time.
Oh, thank you!
[doublepost=1522010644][/doublepost]I was surprised to see that the articles on Android Central seem really down on the S9+ and so do some of the commenters. A lot seem to feel it’s not much of an upgrade. But for me it made the S8+ “concept” usable. I’m having none of the issues with the S9+ that I had with the S8+ and I credit that to improved edge design and more RAM. I find the camera to be a significant improvement. But the reviewers there apparently do not. Oh well, to each their own. My husband agrees with me that it’s a meaningful upgrade even from the S8+. For me only budget constraints would have kept me from upgrading. The trade-in helps. We send ours off this week.

Quicker way to get to battery stats is on the quick settings panel, simply hold the battery icon briefly and it goes to the battery stats screen. Rearrange your buttons so that the battery shows up in the condensed panel for even quicker access.
