The main things I'm missing from upgrading my Note to Pie right now is that Good Lock doesn't work currently, so no editing the nav bar and no way to switch on the AoD only on charge. Also, the inability to lie the phone flat on a desk but lock it to landscape, so it starts up in landscape, this is by far Pie's most annoying feature.

Would post on XDA and see if there's any solutions available. IIRC Samsung makes an app for AOD for some reason for their higher end phones that already have AOD. I'm curious to know whether it's a workaround to the Pie issue at the moment.

Yeah, I might have to do that. I'm not hopeful there's a solution to the landscape issue yet though, googling the issue just brings up a lot of posts about how great the new screen rotate is. It is good if you get annoyed by the screen rotating when you don't want but sacrificing existing features isn't a good trade off for me personally.

The AoD can easily be switched on using the shortcuts in the pull down panel but I'm lazy, I want to have it work automatically when I drop my phone onto its charging stand. :)

You'll have to forgive me here, but could you possibly explain in some detail what the problem is? Off the top of my head, auto-rotate can be disabled with the double pull down or long pressing the top of the notifications area.

As for the AOD, you could try a third party launcher with a fast button on the home screen to disable it when you don't need it. I disabled mine the day I got it. Not a fan of it.

Using the Good Lock Routunes app I could automate the AoD so I didn't have to manually switch it on at night.

On Oreo it was possible to lock the screen to landscape so that if you switched the phone on it went straight to landscape without having to pick it up and angle it. I use my phone on a desk a lot and having to pick it up to rotate it is an annoying step I didn't previously have to do.

Oh, so you mean you had to use an app to force rotate it whereas on Oreo it had the option. Interesting. That isn't an issue I came across with the Pie update. I think it's safe to say that S9 owners will also get Q in a year, maybe even S8 owners. Who knows. A lot of Q is focused on safety, ease of use and some privacy features since apps have been leaching for years. It's a bit more iOS like. The reality is Google copies from Apple and Apple copies from Google. In the end, it's better if both mobile OS have parity so people do have a choice going from one to the other and don't feel left out on new features.

I was watching a few old unboxing videos of Motorolas, Sony and Samsungs from 2010-2012 today and it was an eye-opener of how much we've advanced in phone tech, when it feels a total blip to me. I guess we're inclined to remember the good rather than the bad or cumbersome issues!

Not quite. I used the Routines app on Oreo to automate the AoD.

The landscape on start was able to be done natively in Oreo. So far I've not found any way to get that functionality back in Pie, either in the OS or using a third party app.

Just happened to click on software update on my GS9 which I really never do as I was reading about a couple of Nokia phones I saw today in Best Buy and how they were updated to 9.0 in Dec. I didn't even know the GS9 was in the works for it. Don't think I ever got an OS update on my GS7. Just security patches.
Nice surprise I guess. Thinks look a little different now.
Don't even know what One UI is.

Surprisingly, the S9 got Pie early January. And One UI is Samsung's latest UI and is focused on making as many controls as possible on the bottom of the phone to make larger phones easier to use

Android Pie / One UI ... is being install on my S9+ right now. Didn't think I would officially see this update on T-mobile until after the S10 is released. :D

Got my Pie/One UI update a couple days ago. Love the blacked out night theme and the swipe gestures are great. Thought I was going to hate the updated Samsung app icons but they're not that bad.

Not sure if other OEMs do it, but Samsung's minified keyboard and one hand controls are always useful, even if you have big hands and or long fingers. I don't know if the Google keyboard has something like it.

Question:

Since the Pie update it seems the GPS is now different. I used my Maps today and usually I turn off GPS when I get to my location and put it back on battery saving. No such options now. Does the GPS work automatically now? When you go out of maps it turns off? All I see is location and it's on.
Anybody have any insight on this? Tried to do a search on it and seems nobody really knows.

Are you referring to the Oreo setting in Samsung Experience under Connections>Location>Location Method? If so, yes, Pie did away with it.

Being frank, I haven't toyed with that setting since Android 3 or 4. From the footnotes and other info I gathered up in the last few minutes, it seems as if this is a way to isolate the phone's location from third-party apps to prevent any snooping.

Yes,...and I don't like to leave the GPS on as it drains the battery pretty fast. And reading the link it says turning it off is only using GPS which may not be as accurate? What?
GPS is always more accurate in my experience. And in fact I believe it always asked if you wanted to turn on GPS more better accuracy when using Maps

Yeah, it's confusing. Basically in ON it uses priority GPS, in OFF it uses other methods that are less accurate. Their footnote isn't exactly clear. Let me see what else I can dig up for you because I'm keen on finding out now, too.

I don't believe OFF was ever more battery efficient. I can turn off location and I'll still get more battery drain on the road than at home or at work. It's a stretch to say this, but I suspect the accelerometers in the phone can detect movement and signal the phone to ping Google Play services and report the location because of the Find My Device feature which isn't different than Apple's implementation, IIRC. On my last road trip, I checked my phone myself through another mobile device with cellular data service and saw Find My Phone was logging movement every 5-7 minutes and more or less accurately using the location settings turned off. Mind you, this is different than the finding service embedded deep in the phone's settings.

There is an option in either Find My Phone, Play or Account that allows you the ability to enable location history by date and time, IIRC. And it's capable of integrating Photos with it, and bring in photos geo-tagged, if you allow for photo geo-tagging.

Audio in my s9+ is very bad after the latest update. I have to turn volume to the max otherwise it's too low. Anyone? Very dissapointed, shouldn't have done it :(

For those with One UI on your S9, does deleting recent photos in the stock camera prompt a popup message saying "would you like to move to the trash?"

Seriously android pie stuffed up my s9+ superior audio , camera and everything.....
