I am very tempted to pick up the Note 8, looks like a great big screen, beautiful design, etc...

But man I have been bitten by the Lagwiz bug on every Samsung Galaxy phone I've had in the past, even the S8+ had micro stutters and slight hiccups, compared to my Nexus 6P which is still buttery smooth. Every Galaxy phone I had was always warp speed fast out of the box, and remained super smooth and very good the first couple of months, but it seems the lag starts creeping in after several months of use, like the 4 to 6 months period, it's not same smoothness as the first month of use. Whereas a Pixel phone, the first month, the sixth month, the 12th month now, it's still a super smooth phone.

And then I hear every year, oh Samsung really optimized Touchwiz this year, it's been overhauled this time to be much smoother, and year after year the lag still pops up again 6 months down the road. Yeah the first month or two it's still gonna be great, but tell me that six months from now. But I do agree, each year the lag seems to take longer to pop up, and the 6GB RAM + Exynos seems to be really be the sweet spot the Galaxy phone needs, it's the Snapdragon that bogs the Galaxy phones down more. So maybe the Note 8 is the very first ever Galaxy phone that won't lag down the road, and be smooth as a Pixel ? Maybe. Only time will tell, it's too early to say the now, the phone is still new.

I would love to see a comparison of the Note 8 vs Pixel 2 XL, not now though, but after six months of real world daily use, then pit the two phones against each other, not freshly wiped new installs, but both phones after months and months of day to day use, lets see how they operate and perform after that time ? I would think the Pixel 2 XL will still be buttery smooth in six months, and the Note 8 doubtfully not anymore.
Its not going to be as smooth as the Pixel, but I think the Note 8 is too the point where the difference is not a deal breaker anymore. I really think Samsung are heading in the right direction and if the Note 8 does not lag after 6 months then it will be a real gamechanger.

Unfortunately, we all do not know that.

As a first time android user, I'll be paying attention to my Note 8 performance in the coming months. With that being said, every review has said that Touchwiz 8.5 (Note 8) is SIGNIFICANTLY smoother than Touchwiz 8.1 (S8/+). Samsung seems to be really getting their stuff together, and trying to get away from the Touchwiz notoriety. They of course changed the name, and the appearance (Samsung Experience 8.0, 8.1), and it seems that Samsung Experience 8.5 on the Note 8 heavily focused on optimization.

With that being said, I'm sure the pixel 2 will be smoother, as less features means less time need to optimize all of them, but with how smooth the Note 8 seems to be, is it really going to be much different? Probably not. Definitely not different enough to sacrifice all of the extra features and functionality.

I second this experience. S8 vs Note 8. Note 8 flies. Looking forward to comparing it to the XL2 when I get it

Do the AirPods work well with the note?
Just got them as a gift but I know they're made for iPhones...
If they don't sound good with the note 8 using Spotify I will trade them in for some beats or something?

They should be the same considering the Note 8 has Bluetooth also. Apple would have to purposely make it sound worse with Android.

to my ears they sound horrible. The convenience is not worth the absurd sound quality. If you can top up, buy the bose. If you don't mind bigger ones, then Sony

They work well with my old Galaxy S3... they'll work just fine with the Note 8.

They sound fantastic, by the way.

Which bose ones are you talking about?
I don't like big headphones personally
There are quite a few options in the market now...

Jaybird has ones as well but the other Jaybird products I had always displayed some sort of connectivity issues. So not sure about them when it comes to reliability.

Anyway...perhaps you should demo the airpods and at least one competitor to see how they fit and sound. Maybe, to your ears, airpods sound amazing. To me, I hated the sound, the fit, the look (white tribal earrings) and the fact that you needed Siri to even turn up the volume! No way! And this was me with an iPhone well aware of the connectivity convenience the airpods bring
[doublepost=1507600743][/doublepost]On another note, I have to say I find Bixby more useful than Siri. On the iPhone, I eventually had to switch Siri off cause I find it useless. On the Note, for e.g., I said to Bixby 'Open Whatsapp and call wife' - and it did! Awesome! Even Google Assistant pointed me to a third party app to do this....Bixby is simply awesome!

Finally got a hands on with a Note 8 the other day in Currys whilst buying a TV.
I really liked it.
It's tall, but I much prefer the design of it over the S8's. I hate the bar of soap feeling I get from the S series with their extreme curves, and I don't like the fact that the screen curves in the corners either.

The Note seemed spot on.

It's annoying really, as the Pixel XL 2 has the same annoying curves that the S8's have with the screen corners. I'd have much preferred the XL 2 to look more like the Note.

I suppose this is as good a place to ask as any. My 200gb memory card has 183gb of usable space. I've got approx 45gb of data on it but it's taking up 66gb out of the 183. Any idea what's using the extra 20gb?

I've found the perfect setup using Nova. Also, Sesame Shortcuts are where it's at. If you haven't tried it in Nova, it's one of the most useful features I've ever seen. And it works great with Spotify. If I want to listen to U2, all I need to do is hit my home button, then the letter U, and I can immediately go to the artists home page.

They all come with the klwp preset.

And you have to use Nova launcher.

Is it a big deal to go back and forth between Nova Launcher and Samsung's default? What do you lose from the Samsung experience? Things like soft home button, S-Pen pop up menu, edge menu, etc...

It's not a big deal,no. You can change default launcher pretty much instantly.

You don't lose any of the features you mentioned.

Forget the phone and the launcher, who's incredibly adorable munchkin is that!? Those cheeks! Too cute.
