8.5
VERGE SCORE

GOOD STUFF
  • Lovely display
  • Fast performance
  • Reliable battery life
  • Excellent standard camera

BAD STUFF
  • It’s enormous
  • It’s expensive
  • Secondary camera is far inferior to main camera
  • Terrible fingerprint scanner placement

Seems a bit picky to call it bad that it's so big when it's only a couple mm taller than an iPhone or 6p yet has a larger screen!

So far Mr Mobiles review has been my favourite. Really informative!

The hype train continues for me!!!

I am so ready to get this phone and do all my videos on it. Crazy how people are still complaining about the FPS. Folks must get over it.

Can't wait to at least try this out in a store. I was messaging Basil over on Btekt & TechRadar as he uses his devices for drawing for his thoughts on the edges.

He replied that - There is some drop off with sensitivity with the pen towards the edges and he had to keep moving the canvas to avoid the edges. He also recommended using it on a flat surface to avoid touching screen / palm rejection issues. But other than those compromises was very happy with it and the performance of Sketch Book Pro etc.

He has made me more curious.

There's always been some slight dropoff in sensitivity towards the edges on the Note devices. It may be endemic to Wacom as I noticed that issue on the earlier Wacom enable surface pro models.

The Wacom Surface Pro's were not indicative.

I've been using Wacom drawing tablets and Cintiq devices for years now. All the Cintiq's I have had, had no drop off, even Samsung's Note 12.9" had no drop off towards edges either.

The Note 3, 4 and 5 I had didn't have issues drawing on the edges either.

However, the Surface Pro 2 I had was poor though towards the edges, but was certainly not indicative of the Wacom digitiser devices in general.

I've always had issues with the edges on the Note series. Definitely not a big deal though, but definitely noticeable. But I may have just been an unlucky consumer. The older note series pens were even physically adjustable and that seemed to help a bit.

I always ended up buying the s-pen that was thicker, standalone. It was about 4 X the size of the stylus but far more comfortable to hold as at times I would be sketching for 2-3 hours which is a long time to be gripping the tiny stylus inside the Note itself. I haven't seen if Samsung are going to be offering the bigger stylus to buy or whether they gave up making it.

I miss Wacom SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much on my surface pro, sigh. Even if Microsoft didn't want to put their stylus in a silo on the SP, I was always guaranteed a writing device if I had my Note on me.

Yeah I was all set to buy a Surface Pro 3 (sold my SP2 just a week before launch) only to discover they had moved to N-Trig and as a consequence I've had to avoid purchasing any more Surface products.

It's really annoying because I know if they had kept Wacom I would have certainly continued to purchase their devices.

Now I'm holding onto my older cintiq in hopes that Microsoft eventually move back to Wacom. The cintiq companions are overpriced and frankly ugly.

I would have even loved a Surface studio but they don't even have them here either. It's like Microsoft are conspiring to keep me on mac.

Back to Note8. (Please folks drop the space just like Samsung did) and I am now thinking if the Pixel XL 2 is not launched here (greater chance it will not be), and if the if the iPhone is as pricy as I suspect (€1200), the V30 is likewise unlikely to be launched here too, so the Note8 may still offer the best value on contract. But only if I like the feel of it and if the extra ram fixes my issues with the Exynos S8.

The majority of the reviews today have been stellar for the Note 8. Even the reviewers who didn't like certain things still enjoyed the phone.

I've decided I want to keep my S7 Edge as a back up, so no need to wait on the discount announcement in Canada. I'm gonna just pre-order an unlocked Exynos version. Just gotta make sure it's compatible with my carrier. I'm thinking it should be considering my S7 Edge is Exynos.
Exynos all the way man :D

Mine will be with me next Friday, according to the network I am getting it from.

So shipping times/availability seem good so far?

I wonder how the iPhone 8 shipments/availability will compare.

I played with a Note 8 at the Verizon store and it didn't feel any bigger than S8 Plus. Seems smaller than my 6s Plus, perhaps because it's a tad narrower and edge is different. I don't think it feels "huge" in any way if you're accustomed to iPhone Plus or Pixel XL. And that screen is fabulous. I don't understand the fuss about the fingerprint sensor either. It seemed usable to me.
