This is the first I've heard of a Galaxy F model. I doubt that is playing a role in the low pre-sales.

I'd be interested in seeing the pre-orders for the big carriers in the US. T-Mobile apparently had a ton of interest in the phone during their "pre-registration".

I've never heard of the Galaxy F either. So I super doubt a majority of people are holding out for that.

UK sales equate to less than that of the State of California. Sorry, but even if Samsung didn't sell a single phone in the UK, it wouldn't be a predictor of how quarterly sales would end up. There just aren't enough Android smartphone users in the UK to have much of an impact.

Census from June 2013, showed approx 30 million smartphone users in the UK. Android made up half that figure, with Samsung taking 24% of that = ~3.7 million Samsung smartphone users in the UK. Now split that number down to Note series, S series and other. Not to mention those not planning to upgrade. I would think Samsung would be lucky to see 1 to 2 million sales of S5's over the next year in the UK, with 10% (conservative number) of that preorders. So, 100-200k preorders split thought all the High Street shops in the UK. How many were you expecting?

I wasn't expecting specific numbers, but when the S5 pre-orders are compared with the S4 and S3 in our place they are falling far short. Pre-registrations (before pre-orders were taken) were 130% higher than that of the S4, yet those pre-registrations haven't turned into pre-orders. It looks like people got excited about the S5 initially, but then realised it's not for them.

I'm interested to know if this is a typical scenario world wide. It would seem South Koreans aren't biting either as Samsung have already cut the price by 10%.

We'll know soon enough.

Each person is different though. Alot don’t pre-order with carriers or other companies where you have to start new contracts. It means people would have to buyout their contracts which isn’t practical for alot. I for example bought the S4 and note 3 from unlockedmobiles sim free and will be doing that again so I don’t have to start a new 24 month contract and where I pay more upfront It helps in the long run as my sim only deal is only £15 a month and I get unlimited tethering.

S4 had a slow start as well. I think people are wising up and just waiting on the Note 4 or whatever will be out later in the year. Spring is too early for the year to upgrade. By Oct-Dec, you get all the flagships released and discounts on some of them during Black Friday or Holiday sales.

October - December is really the best time to really upgrade. People now want to play the waiting game for the latest SoC. Note 4 will likely grow more this year and make up the slack of S5's sales. And we have come to a point where we have specs good enough to last years. We reached a saturation point with smartphones. It will gradually decline eventually like the desktop/laptop computer market.

I suppose they don't have the same gravitas that the iphone has. Do people queue up to get the latest galaxy phone. People have to have the latest iPhone even if the only difference between the one they already own is Siri or a fingerprint scanner.
Are you posting from 2010 :) ? Nobody lines up for iphones anymore.

Nobody ever lined up for the Galaxy line, but they have always been available from all the major carriers in the USA and the Galaxy phones have always been one of half-a-dozen or so Android phones to pick from.

Samsung has their 'fake plastic' phone last year and HTC and Sony had their works of art. It didn't do them any good though. Samsung's niche product the note 3, sold more that the HTC one and the Z1 combined.
If Sony keeps putting out good phones then they will build the appropriate momentum. There is no denying that Samsung has put their name out there in a big way and most people understand that when they buy a Samsung that they are getting something close to the top of the line.

This is what makes total sense.....There are so many great phones that are releasing this year. Look at the One PLus One Cyanogen, Moto X2, LG G3, Nexus 6, iPhone 6, Nokia 930, Xperia Z2, Oppo Find 7. So many great phones to choose from....can't go wrong.......

It seems as though people wanted to get their hands on it straight away.

Not everyone is on these phone-flipping programs and they have contracts. They may not be able to make a move upgrade wise or one that would be in their best interests.

There are 50 some odd million S4s out there so ....

Someone else noted that Android users wouldn't line up like that. They'd buy online instead.

Therefore these obviously must be iPhone buyers who are converting to Android, and who are used to lining up to buy anything new.

Or, as some would claim, perhaps they're just confused by the similarity of the stores and the phone names.

;)

They have just opened up a load of Samsung Stores in the UK. Not sure where they are. The flagship one in Westfield is my local

It's really big.

You are lucky

The nearest being opened soon is in Bristol. No news of any planned in the Leicester area or anywhere in the midlands.

I'm sad that I used to go in the apple store just to have a play on the new devices. I would spend hours in a samsung store.

I'm so jealous of you. We don't have any of that in the West Coast USA yet.

I'm like that also, I only spend a few mins playing with Apple stuff but can spend a long time at a Samsung Store if there was one. I still need to find a Samsung Experience store at Best Buys in my area.

It's actually a pretty decent upgrade. Nowadays, it's pretty hard to improve on already slick phones. The S5 accomplished this. We'll see how well it does...

Unfortunately, Samsung thinks they're Apple. Profit wise, they're close; however, they don't have the fanbois. Selling 50 million smartphones should be considered a success. However, if you compare it to the iPhone, it's not as impressive. Their S5 may exceed this # and Samsung should be pleased; they won't be.

For me, the S5 is sweet. But, no way am I upgrading my Note 3. It's not that sweet.;)

I think you may have missed the joke (you know, humour?) and read too much into my comment. Never mind...

It was funny. Wow, my favorite Samsung ads were the ones making fun of the Apple fanbois waiting in line. Now, how will they spin it? Will Apple use it?

Either Samsung have managed to ship enough handsets to meet the same level of S4 pre-orders (unlikely considering Global launch) or pre-orders are lower than expected.
Same thought here. In the US, Verizon's got a "Buy A Galaxy S5, Get One Free" deal going on, which seems pretty crazy for a flagship phone launch. They must know they have more phones than customers, but I guess it's hard to say if that's because Samsung produced a ton of them, or if the demand is really that low.

Saw the S5 recently and it isn't bad. Seems like a good enough upgrade coming from an S3. The S4 was a great device to begin with.

For everything Samsung does WRONG like questionable build quality, laggy TouchWiz, cheating on benchmark tests, being a copycat, etc. You have to admit, Samsung does ALOT of things RIGHT. Very good camera, good battery life, new features, etc. The S4 wasn't a global success simply because it was cheaper than an iPhone. Samsung provides alot of features and capabilities useful to every day consumers.

For me personally, I'd rather wait for the Note 4. That is the only series that has ever interested me from Samsung. I figure the S5 is a bit too wide and tall for one-handed use. If I'm going to get a smartphone with two-handed requirement, I might as well go ALL OUT! Get the phablet flagship with the S-Pen, newer SoC, more RAM, and nearly a full inch bigger screen. Might as well go all-in with an actual phablet than dipping my toes into its territory.

What is needed is LTE dual SIM and stop assuming that people who want dual SIM don't care about the best or are poor.
