People need to chill. The OP isn't saying Apple is the loser here, he's saying they should open their eyes and acknowledge that there is demand for a bigger device as well.

Agreed.

Apple should either move the next iPhone screen size up or make a few different sizes to choose from.
That way the people that want to stay on the 3.5" can stay with that size.
But I bet more people will buy the larger screen.

Is this for real?

I think Apple needs competition or we'd all still have the og iPhone.

I think the main thing Samsung has copied is Apples crappy smear campaign advertising (Mac vs PC). I feel like all that does is piss off loyal device supporters not attract new customers from that competing device.

Much like the Galaxy S II, the Samsung Note is serious business.

There is definitely demand for a larger screen. Anyone who has tried to read websites while walking around with their phone in their hand can attest to this fact.

The smaller the screen, the harder it is to read the text on the display unless you stop moving.

No, its not a feature that everyone needs, but I think that Samsung has demonstrated that there is a market for a device that works well at that form factor.

I will be *very* surprised if the next iphone keeps the 3.5 inch screen. 2007 is a long time ago... pretty much all the other phone manufacturers have moved to 3.7" or larger displays.

Sure, there is demand for larger screens. That's not really the question for Apple. The question is whether that demand offsets the negative impacts of changing the display size. One of Apple's biggest advantages is the economies of scale in their manufacturing process. And then there is the appeal for developers in the limited screen sizes that they have to support in the iOS ecosystem.

I don't think Apple has even reached the point of filling demand for the iPhone at the current screen size. My impression is that the most significant limit of their sales to date has been manufacturing capacity (and distribution), not demand.

I'm waiting for the price on amazon to drop to $450 range for an unlocked AT&T version and I'm picking up a Note. I love it! Its a phone made for real people. Not this rinky dink, "oh look it's so petite and pretty" iPhone crap. I'm glad Samsung is making a good run at Apple. It's about time someone did.

Picked up a note last night to try out. Hate the saturation. My photos look orange and the reds are out of control. I see no ability to fix how badly over saturated the colors are either. Other than that, it's pretty good so far.

I guess I read it differently.
I think Apple needs to make the iPhone screen bigger.
Not necessarily as big as the Note as that is clearly a niche product even at 5 million units sold.

The small screen on the iPhone is one of the main reasons I switched to Android.

Android phones are too big. Many people switched to the iPhone so they can use their phone with only one hand.

Is that when they are viewed on the phone of on a computer?
SAMOLED displays tend to be over saturated.
If it's from a computer, then the camera might be effed.
Take in back for an exchange.
I have the same camera in my Skyrocket and the pics look great.

Take it back... sounds like you got a bad camera sensor.
The S2 and the Note use the same camera.

People want options and different needs. Samsung fills a niche with the Note, and it will sell. Not in the numbers of the GSIII or iPhone, but if it produces a profit for them, I don't see them ending production.

In the end, does this matter? So they sold 5 million Notes in 5 months. And???

People need to chill. The OP isn't saying Apple is the loser here, he's saying they should open their eyes and acknowledge that there is demand for a bigger device as well.

But the OP isn't presenting any evidence showing there is demand other than Samsung can produce 5 million of something and write a Press Release.

Let me help you and the OP out by linking to evidence that supports the claim of larger phones becoming increasingly popular: A study by Strategic Analytics claims that nearly 90% of current Smart Phone owners want thinner, bigger phones in the 4-4.5in range.

I don't have $2K to drop to see if their methodology is solid, but it certainly proves their is a segment of the population interested in larger phones. But assuming even 90% like the idea of a larger screen I wonder how many people would still like them after a few weeks of use.

I have much anecdotal evidence of the Galaxy Note having a higher-than-average return rate than other Android devices due to its size not fitting into pockets, other practical considerations due to its size, or the way people perceive themselves looking holding up the large device to their heads.

Still, it will be interesting to see if Apple stays the course. I have no doubt they are watching the market very carefully.

i've use the note and it is a decent phone its just not for alot of people. My wife tried to use it and she had to hold it with two hands to type, not very practicle at all. I could probably get used to a larger screen but not that huge.

It took the first iPhone twice as long as the Note to do 5 million.

The original iPhone also cost twice as much given no subsidy, and had far less in terms of capability and features. It's an Apples to Oranges comparison.

The iPhone 4S on the other hand, which one could argue is a closer competitive match, sold that many in less than a week.

Everything is relative.

When apples-to-organes comparisons are considered acceptable, sure, it's easy to say everything is relative.

Is there a market for awkwardly-large phone/awkwardly-small tablet combo devices? Sure. There's always a market for something if you can successfully convince people they need it. Even if the product isn't very good.

Does that mean Apple should jump right in? I think not, unless they can find a way to make it work well and fit nicely with the current ecosystem.

so it's official, the Note is the true iPhone Killer.....

Maybe Apple should just quit while they're still behind. The new iPad was a commercial failure and the 4S is struggling to find sales.

And no, I'm not being serious, just feeding the Fandroids what they want to hear. Really, what is the point of this thread? Should iPhone users honestly give two craps what some gimmicky Samsung phone does? Apple has a set roadmap that's years ahead of anything we could imagine. They're not just going to stop whatever development they've got going on just to appease Android fans' wishes.

It's more than just Android fans asking for bigger screens. Don't believe me then check some threads on this board alone.

But bigger doesn't mean they have to go straight to 5.3" They can do a bit of research and see what the most demanded size is (I'm guessing it's in the 4.3-4.6" range) and go from there.

Again, you can keep the iPhone the same physical size! You can take the screen all the way up to 4.5 inch with the current design.

Okay? I'm not sure that is one of the top concerns that Apple would have in increasing the screen size. (And changing the aspect ratio of the screen to fit a 4.5" screen in the current form factor would cause additional problems.)

They had 100k new apps ready to go for the iPad, there are over 200k now. You really think Apple would have a hard time convincing devs to optimize apps for a bigger iPhone? Hardly. iPhone apps are money for these guys and a larger, higher resolution iPhone would certainly attract new buyers meaning more money for them.

I'm going to disagree. If that were true then there would not be more android devices (at different screen sizes) out in the world than iphones.

If what you said were true, then there would be an iPhone shortage. (there isn't).

As an aside, I went out to lunch today and two of the customers in line had white Galaxy Note phones.

They do look pretty sleek and that big screen does make lesser phones seem... lesser. *If* apple stays with the 3.5" screen size (which I do not think they will do), then I think the Note by itself will give the new iPhone a run for its money.
