The original iPhone also cost twice as much given no subsidy, and had far less in terms of capability and features. It's an Apples to Oranges comparison.

Thanks! That's my whole point... that it's silly to compare the sales numbers.

The iPhone 4S on the other hand, which one could argue is a closer competitive match, sold that many in less than a week.

It's still apples and oranges.

The iP4S is a phone that tens of millions of people worldwide hungered for as an upgrade after an incredibly long wait. There was no other brand new iOS choice available.

The Note is a fairly niche market device surrounded by plenty of other recent Android choices. So the point that people were originally making, was that for it to sell 5 million in that market, is remarkable. They weren't comparing it to iOS sales. That's something the iOS fans tried to do.

Dell found out that the 5" form factor was too big. I think 4" is the max for a phone.

Agreed on the 5", it's a niche product. A sizable niche, but a niche none the less. However, after having a 4.3" screen phone, 4" is NOT the max. I love my iphone and wouldn't trade it back for my Droid X, but the X was no more bulky in my pocket or cumbersome to use then the iphone. In fact, I found using the Droid X one handed actually easier for me because the larger size allowed to me to get a better grip on it. I think that many iphone users who have never had a phone with a larger screen would be amazed at how much more useful a phone with .8" of additional real estate can be. And there is so much wasted space on the iphone that Apple could increase the screen size to 4"-4.3" with only a minimal bump in the actual size of the device. It would make the best phone on the market even more, to steal Apple's catch phrase, amazing.:apple:

They had 100k new apps ready to go for the iPad,

 Not at launch.

there are over 200k now. You really think Apple would have a hard time convincing devs to optimize apps for a bigger iPhone? Hardly. iPhone apps are money for these guys and a larger, higher resolution iPhone would certainly attract new buyers meaning more money for them.

I'm guessing you are not a developer to dismiss this change as trivial. There is a big difference between supporting a new platform (iPad) and messing with the current one. (Especially with the current buy-once-updates-forever model.) There is a reason that Apple specifically introduced higher density display at exactly twice the resolution (4x pixels).

There really isn't a compelling reason to change the aspect ratio. The only scenario that I can think of is to add a dedicated area to the device for a specific purpose (controls, notifications, etc.) Apps would maintain their current dimensions, so minimal developer impact other than the new features.

But again, I don't believe that Apple is at a point where they need to make a drastic change to spur demand. My impression is that the main limit on their sales is manufacturing capacity (and distribution), not demand. And their main draw for repeat customers is iOS.

It comes down to how many carriers are offering the Samsung Note vs the iPhone 4S after all we should be comparing current models.

Still it shows a lot of users do want a larger screen yet don't want a phablet or tablet or tabphone. 4" screen is the max I would like to see the iPhone 6 come in at.

I'm going to disagree. If that were true then there would not be more android devices (at different screen sizes) out in the world than iphones.

I have no idea how that follows from what I said.

If what you said were true, then there would be an iPhone shortage. (there isn't).

There has been at every launch. Not everyone is willing to wait. Obviously demand declines throughout the product cycle. The iphone 4 had reported shortages more than 6 months after launch. It was still the most popular smartphone in the world more than a year after its release. The iPhone 4S was just released on a second carrier in China this month - five months after launch.

As an aside, I went out to lunch today and two of the customers in line had white Galaxy Note phones.

They do look pretty sleek and that big screen does make lesser phones seem... lesser. *If* apple stays with the 3.5" screen size (which I do not think they will do), then I think the Note by itself will give the new iPhone a run for its money.

That's pretty funny. :D

Wow lots of replys...and much hate going on too lol.

Firstly I'd like to share my opinion and that is the galaxy note is more than just a smartphone! it is more than a superphone! and it is not a tablet!

It is the closest thing to Portable computing! And that is what I want, me personally, not sure what others want. I know also, that there is big demand for a device like this.

What I want for apple? To wake up! I don't want a iPhone, I want a iPhablet or iNote or something!! The orignal iPhone should stay since there is many that want a 3.5" form factor.

It took the first iPhone twice as long as the Note to do 5 million.

Everything is relative.

Thank god there are still people that OWN their own brain :) I know I sometimes tend to lose mine too. Thanks for the accurate reply.

Seeing some more and more when out, primarily by business people, but some reg guy/girls here and there. Samsung obviously full-filled a niche want for this product, sure it won't sell the number's that others do like the iPhone or GSII but then it's not meant to. Too big for me, love the size of my GSII, but there are a lot of people are are happy with/want larger phone..... just like there are some that think anything larger then 3.5" is massive lol... maybe dudes should stop wearing size 0 chick jeans like I see so many times at the Apple store lol , how the hell do they move in those skin tight things :D

1st full day with it, battery life sucks as I figured it would

8hrs 54mins off the charger with 2hrs 46mins screen time and I am already down to 23% battery. In comparison, my 4s has been off the charger 9hrs 14mins with 4hrs 19mins of screen time but my battery is still at 51% I should also point out that the iPhone is on my main line, so I have been texting and calling with it too. No texts or calls with the Note. Not good....

Haters gonna hate....... When Apple sells millions of iphone you never question shipped or sold but now you wanna get hurt when tables turn and samsung has success.............

Actually, the original article said shipped, and in the past, when manufacturers stated numbers shipped, they meant shipped to retailers and resellers.

You are correct, when anyone sells phones there is no question because those phones are sold and in somone's hands.

Releasing numbers of phones shipped is a marketing tool and meaningless other than that's how many they want to sell, or to justify availability or shortages, etc.

Yeah. Before the iPhone, all touchscreen phones were pure ********* on sandwich.

Other than being off topic I don't understand the negative votes. I managed the small number of mobile devices (less than 1000 and unfortunately not selected them) where I worked during that time and dark times they were.

AT&T was our vendor so our choice was limited to begin with and then to find devices we could deploy and centrally manage was a unicorn hunt. The majority of our phones ended up being Tilt 8100 and 8500s. I remember rebooting the phone every morning to reconnect to AT&T's network. Palm didn't know if they were going to live or die and our Management refused Blackberries. I was looking at Symbian devices and our users often just gave their phones back to us because even on WinMo e-mail was not graceful.

I'm glad the folks that voted you down had a better experience than I did. :)

My entire house is filled with Apple Devices including 4 new iPads. My Note is the exception. You are way off base on the battery life. I can get 16 hours plus easy with heavy use daily.

Would you like me to post a screen shot? I would LOVE to see proof of you getting 16 hours of use with your Note. Thats maybe using it for TWO hours and it sitting on standby for the other 14  Post a screen shot of your battery usage...

Shipped does not equal sold

Many were shipped to Japan where it hasnt gone on sale yet(2nd article that apparently nobody bothered to read). I dont think them being sold is going to be a problem.

I have no interest in a Galaxy Note because it is too big but the fact that Samsung has so many different handsets and they are selling that many is pretty impressive.
Apple has one new handset a year so of course it is going to sell millions in a short time. The Note is still making the rounds while the Galaxy S3 will be out shortly as well so there is more variety from Samsung to choose from than there is from Apple.

I have nothing against the Galaxy Note, but when I see this, you gotta know it looks funny. I mean, you "have" to know people are laughing at you, unless you shop at big and tall stores, I guess.

Looks about as funny as someone trying to watch a movie or even read a book on a little 3.5 inch screen. That makes many people LOL

If I go out where do I put it, will it fit in the front pocket of my jeans? Or do I put it in my back pocket, have a few beers, forget its there, sit down and break it?
iPhone size is perfect, when I need bigger I'll buy an iPad, instead of something awkwardly in the middle.

Sure,

I will use it today and post a screen shot. Why would I lie about that? Yesterday I started the day at 80% and had 47 phone calls. Had 4 what's app messages, 12 texts and 37 emails. Turned on at 4:00am and went to bed at 9:00pm with 6% left. I will let you do the math on that yourself. With 100% battery it pretty easy to make it through the day.

In 2006 1 billion phones were sold worldwide. Not sure what that number is today, but 5 million phones is a pin prick in the overall scheme of things. Everyone needs to relax over the Note. I am using the Note because it's a new gadget, and I like new gadgets, but at the end of the day, the iPhone currently rules the world and will continue to for the next 10 years. The iPhone is one phone, the android OS is in 50 different phones, so when people compare android to iOS they not even in the same ball park. If Apple installed their OS in every phone that was made in the world, then you could equally compare android and iOS sales.

John

Samsung equates shipments with sales because they are sold to their resellers, who resell them... They have always reported sales this way.

These are not in the hands of users, only in the retail channel.

What happened to being different. Are we kids that we're worried about immature idiots laughing at us behind our backs?
