I'm super happy with my fold 3 still going strong. Can't go back to a iPhone until they make a foldable. Calendar and notes with the pen, reading newspapers/magazines and kindle on it. Why would i carry a iPhone and a ipad mini when i can just have one device? Only drawback is you have to replace the inner screen protector once a year. And of course the cameras are not flagship great but good enough.

It feels like Apple has put all it's eggs in one basket spending a decade in the development of the Vision Pro. I'd rather have seen them try a few out of the box ideas like they use to do (iMac G4).
I doubt Vision Pro had much impact on iPhone development. I suspect that Apple cannot yet make a foldable phone that meets its fit and finish requirements. The obvious problem is the bulk. Samsung's Fold is still basically two slim phones sandwiched together. Too bulky for Apple.

While some of the early implementations of the Samsung Fold were laughable, they've kept improving and at least pushing the envelope in the mobile phone space.
Agreed. I imagine that Apple has folding prototypes and I think we'll see a folding phone from them in the next few years.

The obvious one. More screen real estate. Most people want big screens.

I finally saw my first Fold in the wild the other day. I had something installed in my house and the installer had a Fold. He gave me a quick tour. He loves it and said he'd never go back to a regular phone. It's still too clunky for me, but overall it's a pretty nice device. The screen was quite good. The fold crease was hardly noticeable. Direct light brought it out a bit more. Overall I think it's a lot like the notch. You quickly don't see it.
Only 33% of sales in 2023 are iPhone Max & iPhone Plus, so that's certainly nowhere near "most people"

I agree. We’re in the “writer’s block” phase of smartphones. Nothing is really interesting to me.
I think people have just forgotten or got used to, how fantastic smart phones, computers & wearables are and how many things they can do, to make our lives easier!.......and many just like to moan & complain, regardless 😏
I've never seen tech as exciting or a hobby, it's a tool to make my life easier 😊

I guess that's good for people who want it, but it's not justified with the price when you can buy a phone and tablet for a lot cheaper.

Also, from everything I've read, the Z fold is a compromised phone and compromised tablet. That tends to happen when you combine 2 form factors.
But I can bring a foldable phone in my pocket, try an ipad?

Apple pushed small screens for years and only increased screen size when it became obvious that a lot of people were buying Android phones for the bigger screens. Of course there's such a thing as TOO big when it comes to a phone, case in point the Max and Plus, and the Fold solves that problem. When folded, the Fold is the size of an intermediate (most popular) sized phone. Open it and you get a big screen.

It's about bulk. The Max and Plus are simply too large. Shrink the form factor AND offer a bigger screen and I'm sure it would quickly become the most popular iPhone model.

Why does it need to solve a problem? It’s a phone and a tablet. What problem does the Apple Vision Pro solve? I love cool technology. Not every device is for everyone. If you don’t need it don't buy it, there’s other people who will. I’ve seen so many samsung foldables already in the subway, airport, etc. There are different markets for different type of people and I like Samsung trying something different instead of just copying Apple.
And this segment is growing each time indicating people are converting and staying based on numbers.

Have any of their devices, actually gotten a 4 year cycle of upgrades & 5 years of security? Also the key word is "Select Galaxy Devises"
Regardless, none of their hardware lasts that long anyway

Personally, I'd love to see Apple come out with an iPhone 'Fold'.
More options and form factors doesn't mean you can't just keep on with your iPhone/iPad combo.

It feels like Apple has put all it's eggs in one basket spending a decade in the development of the Vision Pro. I'd rather have seen them try a few out of the box ideas like they use to do (iMac G4).

I wonder if recent news of slowing smartphone upgrade cycles means that Apple feels there isn’t much point to investing in a new iPhone form factor.

Maybe it will sell, but not enough to justify all that R&D.

I think I see where Apple is going here. Use the iPhone and its established ecosystem to keep users locked in, while leveraging on that user base to launch their vision pro.

Probably the hardest thing for any business is not just deciding what your customers want, but also determining what they don’t need, and how best to allocate your limited engineering resources.

The video show that more real estate would be a good thing.
Doesnt convince me a crease line is the answer though.

Some cheap Android device that HINGES not fold could wipe the market.
Microsoft tried and it was too expensive.
But there would be a good use case at the lower price point ;)

I'd sure you could engineer displays that bumped together with a tiny black dead space fold edge.
Connect the display electronics at 90 degrees rather than horizontal.

I really don’t care for folding phones at all having a bend in the screen would get annoying fast 🤨

I doubt that. Apple surely has a lot of ideas percolating in their R&D department. Smart phones are their bread and butter and that isn't going to change for many, many years. Nothing is going to replace the smart phone anytime soon. The product category is no longer as exciting as it once was, sure, but that doesn't mean Apple isn't working on radical new designs and form factors. I doubt they can make a folding phone thin enough to satisfy them at this point. I'm sure they're probably working on other screen tech like roll-out screens too.

I think I see where Apple is going here. Use the iPhone and its established ecosystem to keep users locked in, while leveraging on that user base to launch their vision pro.
You make it sound like Vision Pro is an alternative to the iPhone. The Vision Pro is a niche market product that will likely be a rounding error compared to iPhone sales for years to come.

Probably the hardest thing for any business is not just deciding what your customers want, but also determining what they don’t need, and how best to allocate your limited engineering resources.
Apple makes most of its money from the iPhone and iPhone-related ecosystem. Vision Pro isn't even going to dent that. Maybe, in twenty years, we'll have AR glasses with an integrated iPhone, but for now iPhone is Apple's cash cow and that is unlikely to change anytime soon. So of course they are investing in R&D and new form factors for the iPhone.
