The point was you can get 2 for the price. I have one and it's at least 3x the screen space and fantastic for photo and video editing.
I understand, but for my photography I prefer quality real estate instead of size.
Beside that 55" would be far too large for me as it is. Especially when using an extra color accurate monitor next to it (for photography).

And, please no more complaints that it’s only 60hz not 120hz or 144hz. Existing cables cannot carry 120hz at 5K. The tech doesn’t exist!!
That is simply not true. While they aren't consumer products, they exist.
There is even a 49-inch 360Hz 5K gaming monitor.

Agreed, I still wonder what their motivation behind putting out a same priced very similar specced monitor was aside from targeting non-Apple users. Put it at 30" or 32" and you give Apple users a reason to buy it as well.
Or make it cheaper, say $999, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat. I've grown to really like my 2020 27" iMac display, but I want it for my PC too...

i didn’t find a 360Hz but I did find a 240Hz unit. That is not the kind of 5K monitor we are talking about. That one is 5120x1440 so half the pixels blown up to 49”. Those kind of fast response monitors tend to have poor color stability and the resolution will look pretty rough for any documents. It’s also $1800 so I guess it makes the Studio Display look cheap. No indication what connection it uses for that bandwidth but probably HDMI 2.1 with display stream compression cranked up to the limit.

We are probably only a year away from the first TB5 devices so that will allow higher refresh rates and/or high resolutions if people are willing to pay for them.

Edit: I did find that 360Hz “5K” monitor. It seems that it is a technology demonstration at a Taiwan display trade show. Again, low resolution and probably custom I/O that probably won’t be available for years if at all.

I was corrected by another poster earlier on in the discussion.

What I meant to say was that the TB4 and HDMI 2.0 on my current MacBook Pro (14" 2021 M1 Pro) can't drive 5K at higher than 60hz. At the time the ASD came out, I don't think there were many Macs that could use a 5K panel beyond 60hz.

It doesn't suck because it's a bad product, it sucks because it's the same as an 8 year old display (the one that debuted in the 2014 5K iMac). It sucks because many of use waited for years for a successor to that display after Apple refused (for years) to release it as a stand-alone monitor with their casing and design. It sucks because of the message it sends: that Apple can release an ancient product with their logo and improve nothing in exchange for pricing not much lower than the entire computer that contained said display and much higher than other competing products. No one wants to pay that sort of a price for something so outdated, just because it's unique.

The Studio Display is nice and desirable, but remember: there's no such thing as bad products, only bad prices.
People say it sucks because it’s a bad deal for that price and tech, not exactly because the product itself is bad.

Day to day usage wise, users who use it still have an excellent experience. So the it’s right to say only people who didn’t use it say it sucks.

Yes everyone agrees the tech is outdated, the camera sucks, and you have the pay a premium price, BUT there’s nothing comparable on the market if you want:
1. 5K resolution
2. Glossy screen
3. Glass panel
4. Aluminium frame
5. Height-adjustable stand

I have used 4K screens before and it just isn’t as pixel sharp as 5K at 27inch. It IS discernibly sharper. I also DO NOT like matte panels because it makes the blurs the text and pixels.

That only makes the Apple Studio Display the only 27inch 5K monitor the only one with glossy glass screen in the market.

People know what they are paying for when they are paying a premium. The Apple studio display is not a bad product. It doesn’t suck either. It’s just overpriced.

got my s9 5k, and found out that the matte display is not that bad(regarding clear and charp) compared to my imac 5k glossy screen.

anyone know why is that?

Also, should i remove the factory screen protector? it give a glossy mirror look with it on, which i think it's good actually.

Here is my experience

I do understand both sides of the coin and I agree to the overpriced statement. However, after using two Apple Cinema Displays for 14 years now, I am really impressed by the continuous quality of those screens. And these are not the 5K screens, they are the older Non-Thunderbolt version with the MiniDisplay port for Laptop charging.
In todays world, seeing more and more el-cheapo garbage products with shortened Product live cycle, I really do appreciate products that work a full decade or longer. The long usage of that product really makes it cheap in the end.
As a passionate MP5.1 enthusiast, I was on edge to see the long awaited Samsung S9 Viewfinity as viable alternative to Apples overpriced displays. However, I came to the conclusion that I absolutely do appreciate the costly aluminium frame and Apple's supreme quality. Its bad enough to work with cheap plastic screens in my job, but I absolutely do not want that corporate plastic crap in my personal surroundings. I did scrap my plans to go for Samsung and I will get the Apple Display agin when its time to jump ship and move my Intel based tech to Apple Silicone.

The Cinema Display did cost 1100 Euro's in the year 2010. I bought it for my MacBook Pro 17' from the same year.
The MP 5.1 came a lot later. (All of those devices are still in use.) Cost is a factor, but the question really does not matter that much if you buy a product for the next 15 years. Life is just too short and my free private time even shorter. And for that premium time, I want the best quality possible, the best design and something that works when I needed it to be. I almost feel sorry for Samsung. They are great in TV's and most of display solutions are really great.
But its not Apple and it doesn't have the vibe and premium touch to it. So for me, I most likely fall agin for the Apple screen when it's time.

It is that price now. Are you going to get it?
I am on the fence. I have never been impressed with Samsung quality in anything (gas stove, fridge, dishwasher, TV, phone).
I got an open box of this monitor and returned it. The box was missing the Thunderbolt cable, otherwise I m have kept it. But the Samsung setup process so turned me off that I didn’t like the monitor.

Hi everone!

I recently bought a Samsung Viewfinity S9. I’m using it with my MacBook Air M3, connecting the MacBook via the Thunderbolt 4 cable that came with the monitor.

However, I have an issue with an electrical noise (probably coil whine) coming from the back. This problem occurs when I connect the monitor to the MacBook—a slight buzzing sound appears.

There’s no noise when the mac is not connected or when it’s in main interface of the monitor or in settings interface. The sound changes when I connect or disconnect the camera that came with the monitor. The sound changes when I remove the camera, and it changes again when I plug it back in.

I’m not sure if that sound is normal or not. Because, It’s very quiet, but in a silent room, it’s quite disturbing.

Is there anyone having the same sound issue with the Samsung monitors? Do you think it is related to thunderbolt cable. Should i but a new cable or should i use miniDP port?
