I remember when a good monitor became affordable. Or at least reasonable. This still seem too high. I don't argue the price professionally, but when compared to where monitors were 15 years ago on price, I don't think the tech has increased in price so much as they realized what the market was willing to pay.
We have had this discussion as well before. 21" Sony GDM FW500 from 15-20 years ago, one of the top monitors, was over $1200. my 24" Sony GDM900 was near $1500.

Yes, it's 5120 x 2160 instead of 5120 x 2880. However, my 20:20 eyes- long-term accustomed to Apple 5K in iMacs- see no difference at all in the quality of the image: there's just more of it. Are there technical differences? Yes. If we get wound up enough about the technical differences, we narrow our pool of choices to as little as a single choice. That's a very popular game around here.
Its about the PPI. the "5K" widescreens are really just two 2K screens combined. Not even two 4K screens.

But I totally get the widescreen for video. I did play with the Dell 34" widescreen for a moment, just didnt work.

My next screen, once my 2020 iMac gets useless and Im forced to upgrade to an apple studio, or i get FOMO, will be the Dell 32" 6K. Hopin it drops to below 2K.

Ultrafine for life! Kidding I’ve got a Studio Display and it’s in fact the all in one top dog, sorry! I can replace any of the parts straight off apples website, it’s dripping with high end quality, and I don’t have to go into any klunky menu with plastic buttons to do something simple like change the brightness. In fact there’s no plastic to be found. Also they can be found for $1295 or so nowadays. Apple won!

I don’t see why any Mac user would buy this over the excellent Apple Studio Display.

My ASD has been superb, but for some reason it attracts a lot of negative comments in this forum. It works perfectly with my Mac, it integrates beautifully with MacOS, it sounds good, it’s more HDR than some HDR displays I’ve tested, it’s 600 nits, and its webcam is adequate for work meetings. Oh and it’s perfectly color calibrated to my MacBook right out of the box. Yet, people who don’t have one tells me it sucks!!

My only reservation with it was that it was expensive, however, the release of Samsungs display, seems to show that quality 5K displays are not cheap to make or sell.

And, please no more complaints that it’s only 60hz not 120hz or 144hz. Existing cables cannot carry 120hz at 5K. The tech doesn’t exist!!

Same here. I use my ASD every day processing photos in Lightroom. As said above, it's superb.

"Yet, people who don’t have one tells me it sucks!!"

I've noticed that too. That they don't own one speaks volumes. In the end it's just another opportunity to take another swing at Apple, helping many to feel better about themselves after doing so. That's been going on for almost two decades.

Why would anyone pay the same price for a plastic build monitor, am I missing something?
It may be plastic underneath, but it has a metalized coating over it to make it look premium. Looks without the cost means retaining customers while decreasing costs.

Three.

I don't understand how the market continues to sell so many 27" monitors. I upgraded to 32" a few years ago, and I will never look back. The ACD 30" was the big thing in 2011, and let's face it, 4K and 5K really shines at 30"+
Distance from chair to desk is one big reason. If your work area is on a desk that is not deep, you end up turning your head a lot more with a 30-32 than a 27.

No way I’m switching from these:

To a pair of plastic Samsung displays….

wow fabulous!!
what speaker monitor are you using?
and what are you using for the audio section?

I had 2 Samsung TV in the past 8 years. The last one was broken after 2,5 years. They get really bad reviews for all their households appliances. Do you really think I'd give 1,5K to that company???
I'll buy anything but never Samsumg again NEVER!!!!

I’m using Neumann KH150s + Rythmik Audio E22 subwoofer. Matrix Audio X-SABRE 3 Streamer/DAC, Universal Audio VOLT 476P Audio Interface, Benchmark HPA4 Pre/Headphone Amp and MiniDSP FLEX Balanced with Dirac Live as DSP.

Congrats, yours is one of the best dek setups I've seen so far.
the monitors also include the microphone for calibration or you had to buy it separately.
Thank you.

I don’t think I could go back to 27”

What I’d really like is a 32” 5k without any extra “features” like camera, usb hub, speakers, microphones, etc with a mediocre to decent panel at a consumer price

That is my impossible dream

Samsung had one job (sell a more affordable 5K display) and failed. Too bad.
just maximizing initial profits from those who see the benefit of this over apple's display. after this, they will put this on sale and make it seem like a very good deal and maximize profits from those who are more price sensitive. samsung never intended to actually be neck and neck with apple

The math is simple:

Best size for 4K resolution at 200% scaling: 24 inch
Best size for 5K resolution at 200% scaling: 24/4*5 = 30 inch

Any manufacture first comes out with 5K 30'' gets my money.

No HDMI ports, who are they kidding?I had high hopes too. What functionality does it serve that the Studio Display does not? It should be closer in price to the LG 5K ultra fine.

Wow. I never believed the predictions that this thing would be $1K but to come in at the full fare price of the ASD is incredible. Why would any Mac user but this?
None of us can see the future (I know, that's a very rare statement on this site), but I assume the current price is to get maximum profits and ROI on the design and engineering of this monitor from the early adopters who are willing to pay full price, and then prices will drop before too long. I expect there will be sales, especially around Black Friday, that see a big discount. A significantly lower price is the only way this can compete with the ASD.
