No, within the Apple ecosystem the interfaces are normed - thus, no matter which Apple PCIe SSD you fit into the adapter, physically it should match. I have testet all three adapters with a variety of SSDs (OEM Toshiba, Sandisk and Samsung), they all work with the sole exception noted in my previous posts.

Unfortunately I have no SSUBX card at hand and I don't plan on getting one. The simple reason is that for my workflows there is little difference even between a SATA III SSD and a PCIe one.

Thanks, if no one else chimes in on this with additional info. in the next few days, I'll grab one and test it with my 512GB SSUBX and see what happens.

Could it be that this is the problem? I have been using both the Sintech adapter as well as (and currently still use) the no name one. I have none of the problems you mentioned. But I had/have them either as a complete start disk (with entire installation on the SSD) or as a FusionDrive with a conventional hard drive.

BTW, there is a difference between the various models on the market. There is a Sintech with heat sink which won't recognise Apple/Toshiba PCIe SSDs. The no name as well as the Sintech without heat sink do seamlessly and recognise all Apple PCIe SSDs, regardless of OEM.

Best,
Magnus

It could be.
I had the linked userfolder setup working in an older 2012 MBP i while ago before going the FusionDrive route, but i might work different in the MP.
There is a lot of unknown variables in my setup.
The existing hdd volume is way past 128 GB, which is why I would have used the PCIe ssd as system/program drive, and the userfolders on the hard drive. I might try the FusionDrive setup, if i can figure out a way without f***ing up the bootcamp volume on the hdd.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Finally got my SM951 and dropped it into slot 4 alongside an Accelsior E2 in slot 2 as my boot drive. Here are the speeds. Was expecting to hit 1500 but i’m hardly disappointed. Good on Apple for allowing Trim!

my sintech and apple sandisk 128 gb pcie blade in slot 3 will not boot cold ... will boot from disk manager
I flashed my 2009 macpro quad and replaced cpu with 3.46 hexacore .. very fast lots more power
any ideas on what I might try?

I know should boot it is a Apple Drv
in System infomation
says
GENERIC SATA Express Controller
APPLE SSD SD0128F

re flashing macpro myy be an option only thing I havn't done

Once booted in OS X, go to settings and select the startup drive you want. Reboot and allow 1 - 1-1/2 minutes for boot. Mine takes a full 60 seconds to boot w/Apple PCIe SSD. See if that works.

I've done that as we call it a warm boot mine only takes seconds to boot though . just no COLD Boot must be a EFI firmware thing

Yeah, mine takes 5-6 seconds to warm boot, but ages for a cold boot. How long do you let it set on the gray screen before calling it quits? Or does it even get that far?

Can someone verify that once installed, a PCIe SSD can be formatted in Disk Utility? Does it need to be partitioned?
I've read this in a couple of places.

I've bought a Samsung SM951 256gb and have attached it to Lycom M.2 PCIe SSD to PCIe 3.0 x4 adapter. I've a 2010 MP 5,1 (6 core 3.3ghz) and will insert in slot 3. I'm currently running Mountain Lion but will clone my system to the new drive, boot off that and then maybe upgrade to Yosemite or Capitan.

What about the TRIM settings? I saw a few posts back there was a hack for this which I can try.

My experience with the same hardware as yours is that Disk Utility treats the SM951 just like any other drive.
Like any drive, the SM951 needs at least a single partition, but if you are cloning your ML drive, it's a moot point.

With 10.10.4, the new TRIMFORCE command works and enables TRIM on the SM951. Earlier OS's do not support TRIM natively.

Have a look a few post back on here for instructions: #1088 (credit to crjackson2134)
Alternatively, get a copy of Disk Sensei from Cindori which will manage this for you along with a few other handy utility functions.

No Cold Boot .... takes a bit of time then just finds a boot drive and boots
Hi,
I have the same issues with a sandisk 128GB blade and an hexacore 5.1 Mac Pro. (see my previous posts).

I gave up, and settled to the following workaround:

Leave a clone of your boot drive on another drive/ partition in your mac pro.
"Cold boot" to the boot clones start screen an select restart to "warm boot" to the apple blade. (This takes around 60sec. until it finds your boot clone instead of the apple blade and another 6sec. to restart)

My apple blade is connected to pci-slot 2. I tried pci-slot 3 and 4 but my bootcamp drive wouldn't boot in this configuration.

I finally got tired of the 60+ second boot times of my SSUBX card and shifted many things around in the slots. So far with the SSUBX 512GB in Slot 2, I'm getting 11 Second Cold boot times. Granted I only let it set for about a minute to test. I'll see how it does overnight. It's at 2.5GT/s again so it benchmarks at 1/2 speed but to be honest I can't tell the difference in regular use. I'll rock Slot 2 for a while and see how it goes, but I'm probably going to leave it there. Option boot-picker seems to like it much better too.

Even if it goes back to 20 seconds, I'll be very happy with that I think.

EDIT:

After sitting overnight and testing, I'm getting 12-14 second boot times when cold booting. I wish I could get back the 1500 MB/s speed but I really don't see much difference in daily use. FCPX and iMovie launch about 1/2-1 second slower but that could be my imagination. I didn't use a stop watch, it just felt a little slower loading. Either way, I'm finally pretty happy with it. Even at 2.5 GT/s, it's way faster at booting that the Solo X2/840 Pro combo.

Hi Upgrader, yeah, that's the TRIM process I was referring to. I see you're working off a MacPro 5,1 12 core 3.46ghz. Did you do the upgrade from the 6 core 3.3ghz? I'm wondering if this is worth the time and dollars to get the extra speed and whether that would translate into extra render speed working with FCP7 and X and Premiere CC. Can you describe how it was done? Since it's off-topic, you can PM me.

Hello everybody,

I too have a flashed cMP 4,1 to 5,1 with an SM951, I tried installing windows to another drive, a HDD and then another SSD because I wanted the full 951 for OS X, but nothing worked.
I tried installing from USB, HDD, SSD and CD, both BIOS and UEFI, soon as I insert the SM951 windows stops working.
The only way for windows to boot is if I install it on the SM951 (UEFI).

I also tried all the above with two different cards, a flashed Radeon and the original GT120.
Any help would be appreciated!

I had to pull the ssd (sandisk 128 GB/no-name PCIe adapter) out to install windows 7 on a hdd. When booting to windows the ssd had to be in slot 1. I would also suspect that PCIe slot 2 would work. I have not testet it, as it was occupied by the gfx card. Slot 3/4 was a no go for me.

I didn't try that, I'll do so once I have received the no name adapter that I ordered from China, maybe that will work too.
I'll get back with more info, probably next month. Thank you for your input SomeFruitGuy!

I said this a while ago, but never actually got around to it

I'm actually in a position to buy the stuff for an SSD upgrade on my 2008 mac pro now, but am unsure as to what PCIe card and drive to go for. I only want to replace the boot drive, to speed up the OS and application opening.....

Is there one card and drive which is resolutely agreed upon as being best, or down to personal preference?

They all say b plus/Lycom and sm951 for the pcie blade type.

One thing you didn't mention is the size of the ssd you are looking for. If you look at post #1, it's pretty much optimized by order of size/performance. Anything smaller than 256GB is too small for me. I went with the second entry on the list - Snitech card $10, Apple/Samsung SSUBX 512GB card $340 at the time of purchase.

I can easily get 1500GB/s with this combination, but it has to be in slots 3 or 4 in my cMP 5,1 for that kind of performance. The trade off is that it boots very slow from slots 3/4 (60 seconds vs. 12 seconds).

I can easily get 12 second boot times if I place it in Slot 2. The trade off is that it only initializes at 2.5GT/s (as opposed to 5.0GT/s). So it runs at 1/2 speed for data transfers (App Launching and OS loading are just as fast though). The reality of for me is that I'm okay at 2.5GT/s in slot 2. In daily use for me, slot 2 (with really fast booting) feels just as fast as slot 3/4. I'm told by one user, that if I get a 1TB SSUBX (instead of my 512GB), then it will initialize at the full 5.0GT/s with X4 lanes and provide the fast booting as well. In other words, you can have it all, but you've got to pay, if you want to play. The 512 SSUBX I have is lightning fast as it is and boots in 12 seconds from a cold start. I'm golden for now. It's all a personal decision based on your needs. Again, what size do you need?

i got a kingston predator pcie ssd 240gb for 200 bucks from amazon prime day.

dunno why is much slower here, on my windows pc i was getting 1400mb/s read.

Nice! Does it work as a boot drive? If yes, what kind of boot times are you getting in OS X?

Oh, the difference in speed is likely artificial and caused because you are using different software tools in each OS.
