My login screen actually looks fantastic. I think that there are some settings in SwitchResX that allow you to configure a default resolution at boot when you install the Agent and the Helper. But I think mine has always worked correctly for Login Screen.
Fixed with 11.3 beta 4

SwitchResX ver. 4.11.1a4 (Apple Silicon) (Build 2023)
macOS 11.3 Beta

Yes, I did reboot my Mac Mini as what SwitchResX suggested. After the reboot, SwitchResX just showed "Not activated - invalid?" next to my customized resolution.

According to what I have tested and other people's responses, the displays with original resolution 2560x1440 do not work with the current SwitchResX. However, some Dell displays, such as U2520, may support HiDPI without SwitchResX or any other third-party modifications. That makes me believe that it is somewhat feasible as long as Apple unlocks the limitation.
Same issue here, SwitchResX beta 4.11.1 (not sure which build, it is not stated anywhere, but I did downloaded it from the "beta" link), macOS 11.3 Beta 4, mac Mini M1.
I can't manage to support HiDPI on my TV 3840x2160, each time I tried to solution stated above I end up with the "not activated - invalid?" response.
I'm thinking about returning the mac, since it's barely usable on a big TV.

Edit: tried with HDMI and Thunderbolt (usb-c) to HDMI cable, same issue with both.

Edit 2: finally found out what I was doing wrong by speaking with Stéphane. You need to set your custom res by already being in the max res available. This way you don't have the issue of it not being available in the system and the error that I was getting.

Can you explain this again? I didn't really understand it. Is your custom resolution higher than your TV's actual resolution? Or are they both 4k and SwitchRes enables the HiDPI with it's custom res?

My bad, I'll try to explain it better :
  • My devices: Mac Mini M1, Thunderbolt (USB-C) to HDMI cable, 65' 4K TV
  • My issue: at first I only had the max resolution available 3840x2160 with a small interface that made it unusable and the resolution 1920x1080 which wasn't clean on the eyes
  • The first problem I encountered: I tried to use SwitchResX to add my custom resolution in order to activate HiDPI/scaling, to have the 1920x UI with the 3840x resolution. I was adding my custom res 3840x2160 while being on 1920x1080 while using the screen. Doing that I had the error of the custom res refused by the system: this is because I was trying to add a custom res higher than the display seemed to be for my OS.
  • The solution: I modified my resolution to 3840x2160 with the tiny UI, using directly the monutir tab into the parameters (click on scale while holding the alt key on the keyboard). I added the custom res 3840x2160 into SRX using the recommended technique from a previous post on this thread, restarted the computer and this worked and I had new HiDPI resolutions available, based on my native res of 3840x
Let me know if I can develop some points or if this is good for you!

Ahh ok i understand now, thanks a lot! :)
I was asking, because i will need to use a custom resolution that is higher than my monitor's actual resolution. Just hope that will work with the 11.3 update, too. Don't wanna go for the beta, since i am fully relying on that machine.
That your TV res is working is a good sign tho.

I'm not successful, but remain hopeful!

11.3 Beta (20E5210c)
SwitchResX 4.11.1 Beta

I can create a scaled resolution lower than my native resolution when set to my native resolution; but thats not HIDPI. I cannot create a scaled (HIDPI) higher than native resolution that is accepted after restart ("Not Activated - Invalid?" message), the same message received as others here.

Note: I'm on M1 Mac Mini with an LG Ultra-wide (3440x1440). I can to do this setup (I have another machine) with SwtichResX on High Sierra.

I dearly miss my custom HIDPI resolutions!

thanks,

What resolution are you trying to create?

What resolution are you trying to create?
HiDPI mode of 2580 x 1080.

At least in previous versions of SwtichResX I would need to create a scaled resolution of 5160 x 2160. Now that is not accepted "Not activated = invalid?" because I understand its higher than the native resolution as noted in the curent SwitchResX faq:

On 4.11.1 on M1 Macs, you can again:
- define custom scaled resolutions for external displays, though this is limited to resolutions smaller than native. You cannot create complete custom resolutions, only scaling is supported by Apple.

So, I'm puzzled how anyone can be creating HiDPI custom resolutions.....

To confirm, I can now create a scaled non-HiDPI resolution of 2580 x 1080, but its not HiDPI, and looks terrible:

(from System Information):
LG ULTRAWIDE:
Resolution: 2580 x 1080
UI Looks like: 2580 x 1080 @ 60.00Hz

Hey guys so just to recap all the new developments, are you saying that now with the 11.3 beta and switchresx 4.11.1a4 it’s possible to at least get 720p HiDPI on a 1440p display?

I understand that as of now 1080p HiDPI is not possible as it would be scaling greater than native resolution.
Can anyone confirm if they’ve managed to get 720p HiDPI working on their 1440p monitors at least?

In my case, there is no HIDPI at all.

Yeah I read this, probably some customer support exec just trying to get rid of annoyed customers by letting them hear what they want. There’s no fix coming, it’s over. Custom resolution support has been dropped, someone will need to study the graphics implementation and bring this feature via some hack. Hope the right people read this comment

It looks like your LG is not being detected correctly here. I don't think this is an issue specific to do with HiDPI, but more monitor support.

What connection method are you each using? I will work with you both to find the best working solution.

Hey people! @itsphilgeorge @Lap1ace @RDPRDP

So the new 11.3 beta 7 is out! Could one of you check if custom resolutions have been enabled again? Could hidpi options be coming to sub-4k displays again?? Let's not give up on this fight guys! let's keep fighting

I have tested HiDPI on a 49" which is 1440p Super UltraWide.

I will test again and report back with what works.
I also have a 49" display with a native 5120x1440 resolution. Did you have any success with hidpi above 3008x864 with the new betas? If so, what settings did you use?

Hey there! No success with any resolutions above 3008 on any monitor so far. Tested all versions up until 11.3 Beta 8.

Hi,
edit: I've a little problem, I'm running an MacBook Air m1 but I have an 3440x1440 screen , the text is kinda blurry and the UI is pretty small.
I've been reading the thread with interest but failed to understand if the beta and SwitcResX could help me ?
