This might be the best thing ever to happen to Forstall. It will be interesting to see what he will do next. Im sure the guy has plenty of ideas. He has enough money (and could find backers) to do anything he wanted probably. Sometimes when you get "fired" it turns out to be a good thing and you get to try something new.

Chance to follow his mentor. He may take some time, re-emerge with a new idea. Wouldn't it be ironic if ten years from now some technology he creates is bought by Apple, he returns, compared to Steve's second coming, and ends up CEO.

I think the core OS is fine (Core Data, Core Video, Core Animation, Core Audio, etc).

iOS 5 had more core OS "developer" features than any previous iOS. iOS 6 didn't seem to contain much of either (consumer or developer), which makes you wonder wtf the iOS team was doing this year.

The springboard is where Apple needs to focus their attention. While easy to use, it's become a relic compared to other mobile operating systems.

I feel like Forstall (and likely others) have been holding the springboard back for fear it won't be user friendly if it contains live tiles, widgets, etc.

The springboard is the face of iOS. It needs an overhaul.

My suggestions? Get rid of the multitasking bar. Add expose. Add dashboard widgets. Add stacks and animated icons. Notification Center needs to be reorganized and more useful (I know a lot of iPhone users that don't even know it exists). Kill the linen background.

By the way, with all the Forstall bashing (and I've joined in too), he should get a lot of credit for the creation of both Mac OS X and iOS. He even was a lead designer on the the Aqua interface.

Regarding Aqua, I do like what has happened with Aqua over the years. With Leopard, it became much more mature and modern (and Forstall reportedly managed that Leopard team). I would love to see that come to iOS.

I feel like iOS in where Mac OS X was at 10.3 or 10.4 and needs a 10.5/10.6 to push it on into the next five years.

No ... I will NOT grant credit to OSX to Forstall ... I'd rather give that Bertrand Serlet who was a pure prrogrammers' engineer. Aqua was not loved by many and I've used it for a full year after Puma. Bertrand gave us serious innovative improvements in Leopard and Snow Leopard.

The guy is basically being described as a cancer within Apple's locker room, with a me-first attitude. Why wouldn't anyone willingly take that on? Besides, it's not like Google's at a loss for new ideas, more so Apple, in fact.

I don't think his style would be very compatible at Google. Word on the street is that Scott likes control and is not easy to get along with.

Really?

An awful lot of people like to bash on the skeumorphic concept, but I completely understand why Jobs would have been a proponent of it.

At the end of the day, everything you see on the computer is a virtual representation of something physical anyway. Even things as basic as window borders give the user the impression of some physical, real-world object that occupies space up to those boundaries and can "cover up" other virtual objects when drug over the top of them.

What's really so bad about designing applications to simulate real-world counterparts more closely? There are some desktop UIs for the Linux OS out there that do their best to completely avoid anything skeuomorphic (mainly for performance reasons, as they're intended for use over potentially slow network connections to remotely draw the X windowing system on a terminal). IMO, those always look really dated, visually unappealing and lack a feeling that the UI will be fun to use.

If anything, I think people just dislike some of the textures chosen (such as wood grain or stitched leather), because likely, they don't care for those materials much in real life either. (They're seen as potentially a little "stodgy". Do you want your appointment calendar to look like the one grandpa used to use?) But overall, I don't take issue with the concept.

Today I learned that there's a word for what I absolutely HATED about some computer UI design: Skeuomorphic. That this scourge can be identified by name, and that a large proponent of it at Apple has been fired, gives me great optimism about the future of Apple software.

Like most things, a tiny bit of it is OK (like having a little picture of a metronome in the metronome button in Logic), but it's gotten way out of hand (not so much in Logic though).

I'm sorry this individual is losing his job, however if his departure marks the end of skeuomorphism in Apple software then I've found my own silver lining. The skeuomorphic apps are embarrassing, in my opinion. The sooner they are modernized the better.

I'm confused. What happened to all the Apple fanboys (not an insult) who said nothing was wrong with iOS and it was fine the way it was and that nothing needed to change because there was no stagnation? Serious question.

They never existed. They're an invention of people who have no better ideas than to throw around terms like 'fanboi'.

Oh brother, what jekyll and hyde group....Championing Steve Jobs and the fantastic heights he took Apple and then complaining about the skeuomorphism which Steve pushed for....If it goes get ready for a really boring interface...That's part of the appeal of apple products to a wide range of customers.

Personally I like skeuomorphisms...

Great point, and I also like skeuomorphisms. I think those details make things more charming, at least in most cases. Game Center's design isn't my cup of tea, but I fail to see how people get upset to the point where they celebrate this guy leaving the company. I'm not familiar with either Ive or Forstall, but calling the skeuomorphisms "distasteful" rubs me the wrong way. The current design of OSX to me is awesome throughout, I don't know what people expect to be changed, but I guess we all have out own taste.

As long as we have a "desktop" and "Windows" and other analogues with real life, we will always have skeuomorphism. There are areas where it makes lots of sense.

I'm not too thrilled that Forstall is gone as I actually like him. I thought he had great charisma at the keynotes and enjoyed his stage presence, it kind of reminded me of Steve. However, I wasn't entirely a fan of where iOS was headed so I'm glad that responsibility has fallen to the OS X team.

It doesn't matter what you or I think, or any other customer for that matter. If you're going to carry a larger than life attitude and you're not God, then you're going to get canned. And Forstall was certainly no God. Far from it.

And I would go as far as pin this one on Jobs. He was Forstall's mentor and he tolerated Forstall's garbage for years, even probably enabled it. He should have adjusted this guys attitude years ago.

Let's not forget that Steve Jobs was forced out of Apple before too.

Perhaps we'll see the second coming of Scott Forstall?

Also remember the fact that most people who were forced out have never ever returned.
By looking at iOS 6, I can't see the genius in him that will make him Steve 2 in the future. So the return of Forstall seems to be a good wish at most...

It's pretty pointless as outsiders to comment on the inner working dynamics of Apple, so I won't add to the fray. ;)

even more

Hmmm. Stocks drop largely because of criticism arguably due to forstall directions, and his departure accelerates that?
The markets ate closed again tomorrow... Good timing for a big shakeup. Cooler heads will prevail by the time the markets reopen on Wednesday

If Ive takes over the interface then I'd imagine the os will be a lot more consistent. Some apps were updated with white borders this year (phone, maps, music) and some weren't (calender, safari) I think ive will sort this out and make the taskbar more consistent too. If big leaps are made in ios 7 then we'll know if it's a good or bad decision

They must be in the same hurricane shelter as the people who say nothing's wrong with Apple Maps and who will be all vocal about how a Retina Display on the iPad Mini "just makes sense" when it comes out with one a year from now.

Apple's making very bold statements lately that some people on this board should pay attention to. Everything they make is not perfect; they make mistakes like any other company, but they're going to try their best to be humble and fix them.

Could you imagine being forced out yet somehow having to still go there everyday for the next X months??

What happens to all of the restricted stock units that Apple awarded him? He isn't leaving the company... he is being forced out. Can he cash out?

Totally agree.

Looks like the empire is starting to crumble..

We keep hearing that with every senior member leaving to be replaced later. Last I checked, Apple still makes billions per year and sells millions of devices...

I think they become unrestricted in 2013 - when he actually is officially gone.

I think few would argue that iOS has gotten a little stale over the past couple of years. Yes there are new innovations but visually it just looks a bit dull now. I can't wait to see what Jony Ive does with the design. It's bound to be visually stunning and head and shoulders above what anyone else is doing.

Well don't expect too much as IVE had the same ipad design from iPad 2 thru iPad 4 and basically iPhone 4, 4s and 5 (slight tweaks). I'm not sure he's the Holy Grail of designers myself. He likes to come off that way (appears douchy to me).

True. Forstall likely got fired for spilling his coffee on Tim's lap last Friday. It wasn't anything to do with the stagnation of iOS or the abortion otherwise known as Apple Maps or anything.

Yeah, they should've made the iPad's thin rectangle shape a different thin rectangle shape or perhaps shifted the power button to the other side or even put wings on it.
