Sell iPhone for a regular cell phone. Thoughts??

I find myself using my iPad almost all day. My iphone is very rarely used now that I can use the pad for all my tasks. What phone would you recommend that I can tether wirelessly to the pad that has good rates and decent coverage?

Nexus One, it's T-mobile and will have the cheapest rates but check the coverage maps, never had a problem in miami-ft lauderdale area not sure about other places.
 
Is that really a good idea? I mean, with your iPhone, you can take it everywhere you go with little to no hassle. You have access to all those apps whenever you have a little time to waste. Can that mobility really be replaced with an iPad?
 
I was thinking about dropping my iPhone as well...

I have not used it for anything other than a phone since i scored my iPad...it's becoming increasingly more difficult for me to justify spending $120+ a month for the iPhone..

Besides tethering, i have no real use for the iPhone any longer...
 
If you get a different phone, your gonna have to get an ipod to carry around. So don't forget about that. Plus all the cool ways iPhone and iPad interact with each other, you will be missi ng out on that.

Sorry, off topic, but $120+ for real, per month?! Wow, I thought I used the phone a lot!

Back on topic, I have considered this option if I find my iPhone being redundant (when we finally get iPad in foreign lands). Sadly I think my 3G wouldn't really be worth that much on eBay, and my contract has expired so I am on a cheap SIM-only deal, so maybe not much to save...

Change your plan!

I pay $71 each month with the smallest calling plan ($40 for 450 minutes--of which I use about 30), $30 for data, $15 for 1500 texts + taxes - discount = $71).

That should save you $50.



I too am thinking of ditching my 3GS but I've still got a ways to go on the contract. When it's up I'll know if it's time to let it go. I've got the iPad 3G on order so I'm thinking a regular phone is all I'll need.

Same here, except I got the WiFi-only iPad, since I have the iPhone. I'm thinking that next year I'll upgrade to the 3G (or whatever) iPad that comes out, and ditch my iPhone for a cheap-o phone with a $10 a month plan.

Ahh yes it is, my bad, forgot about that. I think the plans will be cheaper with T-Mobile though. I am only paying 50 a month with unlimited 3g, 3000 minutes and 300 texts. That plan is old though i've had it for over 10 years so I doubt the rates will be the same for a newcomer but should be able to get something similiar.

Look at scrabble, and tell me you think that that is the last time a developer Will make them interact. I cant be the only one who can actually see where people are gonna go with that..

And i dont get why you are recommending the nexus one. He asks if he should sell it and get a regular cell phone. Not a smartphone. Why would he sell the iphone and pay $20 less to be on a worse network with a worse phone? i wanted a nexus one but i keep hearing how bad it sucks, and i cant figure out why it has a trackball still. Or he can pay probably $40 less to just have a regular phone and not worry about the data plan or how good the 3g network is. Thats what he is asking.

Because if he gets a regular phone he's gonna want the ipod. Music apps suck on every other phone. If he got a nexus one he would be fine, but i had to buy an ipod when i got my droid because its way too heavy to run with and it messed up the headphone jack. I guess he could get by without an ipod, but i bet he would end up getting one, cause i bet he has all his music in itunes, and the only program i have found that is easy to transfer it all is zune.

But his iPhone will still work as an iPod after he takes the sim out... So he can just use it if need be.
 
It's hard to justify spending almost $100 a month on an iPhone nowadays unless you REALLY need it & use it a helluva lot. Plus, with the upcoming 3G iPad having such cheap data plans with no strings attached, not to mention the ability to do true VoIP in the background with the 4.0 OS, it kinda shows you how much we've all been raped by cell phone companies.

I ditched my smart phones & am using a Peek email device. It has push email & I can also SMS from it using my google voice number for $15 a month. I have a cheepo tracfone that I keep in my bag if I ever need it with my iPad doing everything else. Best thing I ever did ditching that smartphone ball & chain with it's insane fees. They can take their bucket of minutes with SMS + data fees & shove em up their corn hole.

Seriously I can't justify a $120 cellphone bill!
 
Get the HTC Evo 4G and you can tether your iPad for free at 4G speeds. Sprints unlimited mobile to mobile plan is $69. This is what I plan to do. The phone will be released on June 13
 
I'm planning on getting an iPad 3G. My plans:

1) I dropped my iPhone on April 2. Savings of $35. ($30 + $5 text)
2) Use my iPod Shuffle for working out, listening to music. MUCH smaller and easier to carry than an iPhone.
3) My new phone is MUCH smaller than the iPhone. It's just a simple $49 phone, and all it does it make/receive calls. I'm ok with that.
4) I'll get an iPad and have a lot nicer 3G experience. I'll pay either $0 or $15 or $30 a month for 3G. Depends how much I use it.

I'm getting the best of all the worlds, and it's $5-$35 a month cheaper.

I could do it all on one device (the iPhone) but....
iPhone is not great for working out with - too heavy and large.
iPhone is not great for surfing/reading - too small.

And I only carry 1 device in my pocket which is smaller (cheap $49 phone) and carry my iPad with me (when I get it) instead of my papers and day-to-day calendar.

I'm not the type of person who goes out at night who needs my iPhone with me to look up stuff / socialize. I don't do texting. It's good for me, but might not be for you.
 
I was thinking about this also, but realized I do use my iphone for alot of things that the ipad can't replace. Mostly that is listening to music and podcasts in the car and while I'm outside the house. While I could use the ipad for that, its very awkward to carry around to listen to music and also not as easy to plug into my car stereo, which I can do with a ciggerette lighter dock I have now, which will also charge my iphone.

I also like having quick access to email and internet when I'm out, and just stick it in my pocket and not have to worry about carrying around a big ipad. Like if I'm out at a restaurant and want to quick check something, an ipad is not designed for things like that.

The only reason I'd even think about switching to something like a palm pre, is using it as a wifi hotspot, which the iphone can't officially do. I know there is a way to do it with jailbreaking, but that is not an ideal solution for me.

While I have been using my iphone less at home because of my ipad, I don't think the ipad can replace the mobile experience that people want from an iphone.
 
I'm already carrying a smart phone without data and a Touch, plus the bag with that will hold the ipad in it. The places i need the bag during the day - are the places i need the 3g, so i'm good.

if i can find a cheap phone i like without a contract - i'll ditch my "big" treo (most new phones aren't much smaller though), and carry that.

But i can't commit to a 2 year contract with data again. Just not going to happen.
