While I love my iPad, there are just times when I wont have it with me. During those times, I still like to check my email, check twitter, listen to music, play a quick game, read the news, read a ebook, quick web browsing. Just because I got an iPad, doesn't mean to me that my iPhone is useless now. My usage patterns have just been altered a bit.

I know some people just don't get this idea, but I see this becoming an increasingly HUGE issue for Apple, especially as more and more people get iPads. I haven't used my iPhone like, at all, since the iPad came into my life. Yes there are times when I can only bring my iPhone, but really really ask yourself, how often are those times? Fortunately my cell phone is through my work so I don't have the burden of the bill, and so I won't be looking to get rid of it, but will I be all over the new iPhone in June if I have to pay out of pocket? Probably not. I have the iPad. And its brilliant. Do I need to check my email right now this second if I know I will be back home or work in a little while? Maybe sometimes. But could I live with a flip phone? Sure. We did it as little as 5 years ago. Hell, some of us lived before cell phones, oh the horror, or even email at all. :D Now all of a sudden we can't live without constant iPhone connectivity? Give me a break. Unless you are a heart surgeon on call, or something else like that you can live without an iPhone.

Palm Pre Plus with VZW will let your iPad tether through wi-fi. That's my little setup right now. :D

Thinking seriously about doing this also. I haven't used my iPhone for anything except phone since I got my iPad. My contract is up in Sept. I will look for something new. I'd really like a phone that serves as a mobile hotspot (I know about MyFi but don't want to JB).

I'm definitely not doing that. Alright, maybe you used the iPad to browse the web quickly rather than turning on your Mac or PC. Maybe the iPhone used to be the device for that, but you prefer the iPad. But just because the iPad is better at some things, doesn't mean the iPhone is useless beyond calling people. Firstly, it's a kick-ass iPod. You can listen to music and podcasts while walking down the road, and it fits in your pocket. And if you are just popping out of the house, and don't have a bag or case, you may get stuck somewhere in a queue when you don't have your iPad. Then you've got the internet and all your apps in your pocket. And the next big thing in iPad gaming is going to be using the iPhone as a controller.

A non-Apple phone will also play music and stuff. That's undeniable. But the iPhone has more apps to choose from and many of those will be universal, working with your iPad too.

I considered this route. An iPad with 3G and data plan and jettisoning my iPhone. However, I rely too much on the iPhone-computer Contacts integration as well as other features. Sure I can live without Mail and apps like ScoreCenter on my Phone which leave a little too plugged in/connected. But I am really used to adding a contact to my phone and having it sync to my Mac and vice versa (added to which I have MobileMe so it does it without connecting). I also use the Google Maps app a lot, not for directions but really as a 411. Type in a name, let it find the location, tap it, tap the number and call. It is indispensable when we are out and about. So I will most likely pick up a WiFi only iPad at some point.

Like you I'll probably stick with the Iphone when it comes time to replace my 3G this summer. However the Ipad changes the calculus about which Iphone to buy. Previously I bought the one with the largest memory for videos. Now, why watch a video on a phone when you can watch it on the Ipad? So I'll be buying the model with the smallest memory instead.

Get the HTC Evo 4G and you can tether your iPad for free at 4G speeds. Sprints unlimited mobile to mobile plan is $69. This is what I plan to do. The phone will be released on June 13

Cool...but Sprint sucks!

switching back to VERIZON

I love my iPhone, but I have such terrible service that most of the time I have my phone forwarded to my landline and I use Google Voice to call out long distance. The iPhone has been a love/hate thing from the beginning. I love the phone, hate not having cell service.

Now that I have an iPad, I'm thinking of getting a basic phone for calls on Verizon (which I NEVER had a service issue with), or get an Andriod phone with MIFI to use with my iPad. Not sure which options are available for this.

Either way, I can't wait to ditch AT&T... they suck big time in Los Angeles.

Assuming you're in the US, the ETF is $175 and drops $5 each month. If you've had your iPhone for a yr that's $60 off your cancellation which brings the total to $115 which is what some of yall's bill averages. But you'd rather keep paying that $100+ a month because you're under contract? Makes no sense to me.

I too am thinking of ditching my 3GS but I've still got a ways to go on the contract. When it's up I'll know if it's time to let it go. I've got the iPad 3G on order so I'm thinking a regular phone is all I'll need.

Hrmmm....I would venture to say that this could be yet another opportunity for Apple to make $ because of the inevitable iPad/iPhone redundancy. By that I mean, it wouldn't be to far a stretch for them to morph/spin-off the existing iPod Nano into say an "iPod Nano Phone". Form-factor is great/could be slightly larger, and the screen real-estate is perfect for just making simple voice calls. No smart-phone anything. Just pure iPod meets cell phone. Walk-away. Still yet another amazing Apple product and would compliment perfectly the I-have-an-iPad-but-still-need-a-cell-phone lifestyle.

I am also thinking to give up iPhones. I have a family plan with 5 iPhones so it's extra $200 ( with fees and taxes ) a month for the data plans nobody will use in two weeks ( when iPad 3G is out ).

Is there are any phones that look and feel close to iPhone but only have SMS and dialing functionality?

I think there's some way to turn off the internet/data completely on the iPhone. A friend of mine has a jailbroken iPhone on t-mobile without a data plan.

I've been having similar thoughts, given that I'm waiting for my 3G iPad. Right now I'm paying at&t almost $100/month, and frankly I'm getting tired of it. I have an unlocked iPhone 3G that I bought in Europe, so I'm not under a contract. I'll most likely look at T-mobile and see if I can a less expensive service there. It would be really great if at&t made our iPhone data plan as flexible as the one that iPad has. Otherwise, judging from others posting to this thread, they may be facing some customer attrition.

While this sounds nice, I don't think the EVO will be available for the same price as all the other sprint phones, otherwise they would have said so already...plus 4g is only available in a few cities right now.

Where I live though, they do have 4g and their network works rather well, so the cheaper price is nice.

Just a question but why get rid of a phone you like when a simple software based hack and a $10 app will give you what you want.

I went through the exact same delima as soon as the ipad was announced, but ultimately i like the iphone too much as a phone. I like keeping my texts threaded I like the look of OS 4 and the abilities it is going to bring and i have played with a lot of other phones that just end up frustrating me. this is the main reason i went with the myfi route. It works flawlessly and i get to keep my phone and only pay for data once.

I will say this though, while iPhone plus mywi is a perfect setup for me now who knows what will happen inn the future

is there a way to send and receive SMS text messages on the iPad? That is all I use my phone for (not an iPhone).

It really boils down to who you are, how you get around, and how you use your devices.

I myself ride my scooter almost everywhere I go in town. So Im already carrying a messenger bag with me anyways that has the stuff in it Im gonna need for the day. So for me, its not a big deal to sock my iPad in there too.

Basically, my day goes like this. The gadgets I carry in my bag are my Peek email device (for when I need my push email & SMS to be pocketable), my iPad (for my computer needs & doing VoIP calling at hotspots) & a cheepo prepaid Tracfone with a couple hundred minutes on it (this is a "just in case device". I hardly ever use it). Oh, and a BT stereo headset that can be used hands free as well should I ever need that. And all this costs me a month is $15 for the Peek push email/SMS service. Not bad. I find I rarely ever really need to have voice. but if I do, my iPad is there if Im at a hotspot. If not, thats what my Tracfone is for. And I use all these with a single Google Voice number. Pretty rad.

When the 3G iPad comes out, I may trade up so I can VoIP from anywhere.

Here is what I'm doing...

I'm dropping my iPhone and then Switching to Sprint. I will probably get the HTC Evo 4G when it comes out and get the $69 plan for Unlimited messages/Data and I think 450 mins. Sprint also has Discounts for almost anything. For example, if you work at ANY bank, you get 25% off. I will only get a 15% discount so It will be about $60 a month.

Yup Yup.

I have the WiFi iPad, I might be swapping it for the 3G version. I also had a iphone 3gs.

I sold my 3GS last night. I do not see a point in paying ATT 30.00 for data on my iphone and 30.00 for data on the iPad ( if i go the 3g route )

Even if i dont get the 3G Model, I still think having the 3GS, iPad and a MBP is a bit overkill.

Sold off my 3GS, bought a simple, basic Samsung flip phone with NO internet and i am good to go. Each device gets equal use.

Sell off your iPhone NOW while the resale is still good on them!!!! Seriously, who really needs a ipad and iphone?
