I have the WiFi iPad, I might be swapping it for the 3G version. I also had a iphone 3gs.

I sold my 3GS last night. I do not see a point in paying ATT 30.00 for data on my iphone and 30.00 for data on the iPad ( if i go the 3g route )

Even if i dont get the 3G Model, I still think having the 3GS, iPad and a MBP is a bit overkill.

Sold off my 3GS, bought a simple, basic Samsung flip phone with NO internet and i am good to go. Each device gets equal use.

Sell off your iPhone NOW while the resale is still good on them!!!! Seriously, who really needs a ipad and iphone?

What about your contract? Didn't you sign a new 2-year contract when you got the 3GS? I did and that's why I thought I couldn't sell mine until that has expired. Are you saying I can use any phone to fulfill my contract? I guess that makes sense--I didn't realize it. Can you confirm?

yeah, but pocketability is key. I'm just not gonna carry an ipad everywhere like I do the iphone.

If you had one of these you could ;) I got the vest, it's awesome.

I'm considering this as well and am surprised so many people are interested as well. The only way I wouldn't change would be if there was some legit way to tether. MiWi makes my phone TOO HOTT. Weren't we promised tethering in 3.0 before or simultaneously with PUSH???

I've just started looking into this today:
:apple: If I get the Pre (I HATE palm) w/ Vzw (I won't go near sprint) then I still couldn't talk and surf the web at the same time.
:apple: If I buy the MyWi (or however you spell it) then I'm overpaying ($30 250mb or $50/$60 5GB for more than 1 device) data per month compared to AT&T($30 unlimited 1 device), PLUS the cost of a 'normal' cell phone.

The primary objective is to save $ while still having unlimited (or close to it) data w/ 2+ devices with the ability to make an occasional phone call/text.

is there a way to send and receive SMS text messages on the iPad? That is all I use my phone for (not an iPhone).
Yes, change your main number to a Google Voice number & then set your Google Voice preferences to email you a copy when someone sends you an SMS.

You'll get it on your iPad's Mail box where you can reply to it there via email (the person on the other end will receive it as a normal SMS, not email) or use Google Voice's web interface to respond.

or you can download textplus or textfree (although there is no ipad version)

I love my iPhone, but I have such terrible service that most of the time I have my phone forwarded to my landline and I use Google Voice to call out long distance. The iPhone has been a love/hate thing from the beginning. I love the phone, hate not having cell service.

Now that I have an iPad, I'm thinking of getting a basic phone for calls on Verizon (which I NEVER had a service issue with), or get an Andriod phone with MIFI to use with my iPad. Not sure which options are available for this.

Either way, I can't wait to ditch AT&T... they suck big time in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles? Are you serious? Do you spend most of your time in the basements of buildings or abandoned mine shafts? ;) Because of the religious organization that I belong to, I know dozens of people all over the L.A. Area that have iPhones and I've never heard of anyone having more than the occasional dropped call, which happens on every network. In fact I know many people up and down the west coast from San Francisco to San Diego and they all LOVE their iPhones and don't have serious service issues. I'm not suggesting that you are not having real problems, but you may very well have a faulty phone.

No no no. You can sell your iPhone after the first 30 days. Aslong as you have a phone and keep the contract and your number your fine They don't force you to keep the iPhone for your contract. All you do is switch your phone call them to remove the iPhone data plan and your done.

Cool, thanks! I will have to give it a couple of months to be sure, but right now I think I'm headed that way. Hmmm.

I also use my iPhone a lot less. I've got a 3G phone and see no need to upgrade it anytime in the future. I was waiting for my daughter at the doctor yesterday. Sat in the waiting area reading newspapers on the iPad, much nicer then reading them on my iPhone.

This is something that I didn't realize either. It makes no sense.

When you sign a 2-year contract, it's for the SIM CARD. You agree to be under contract with a minimum amount (like $39.99) for whatever phone is using that SIM CARD. If the phone that happens to use the sim card is an iphone, a data plan is required. Move the sim card inside the iPhone to a regular phone, and you don't need the data plan anymore.

It's very odd, and doesn't make any sense. For example, you could just buy an iPhone for $199, then after a few days, buy a regular go-phone for $29. (Go phones don't require contracts). Take out your iPhone sim card and put it in the new go phone. Call AT&T and tell them no more data plan. There, you're done. You now have an iPhone out of contract, and a $29 go-phone that's under contract for the remainder of the 2 years.

You can then sell this iPhone, or use it with wifi. iPhones work fine without a sim card.

I would think that AT&T would lose money if you did this, because they're subsidizing your iPhone cost, but you're moving off the iPhone right after you buy it. It's strange they allow this, but they do. I even confirmed this with the people at the retail AT&T store near me.

what about the Vzw MyFi?
you can provide 3G service up to like 5 devices
don't know what's the monthly plan on it though

Change your plan!

I pay $71 each month with the smallest calling plan ($40 for 450 minutes--of which I use about 30), $30 for data, $15 for 1500 texts + taxes - discount = $71).

That should save you $50.

I use the exact same plan as you but my bill comes to $97 a month after taxes. What kind of discount are you getting, may I ask?

I still need my iphone but not as much as before. that's for sure.

I'll keep it but I'm not sure how many more apps I'll get for it. If it's a universal app yes, otherwise iPad only.

If you give up the iPhone, what will you do for texting and having contacts and calendar with you all of the time?

I don't know, I think it would be really annoying to carry the iPad around EVERYWHERE after a while. Professional parties, meetings, even casual dinner parties in the neighborhood - you going to be taking your iPad there?

iPhones/any 'super'phones these days are just so much more necessary than an iPad IMO. What about that important email that you get in the middle of a meeting - with an iPhone you can reply slyly to it without anyone even knowing.

ipad 3G + tethering for me.

Have the 1st iPhone with like $76 a month bills...

So I read with intent on what I might want to do IF I go with the iPad 3G....

What I am sensing is the same feelings I get from reading some threads on here is that once one goes iPad, that the iPhone becomes less used. And even though things seem to be getting better in the economy - many of us are still behind the 8 ball... or are now seeing that a few dollars saved here and there adds up.

I know that since my MBP 13" - that my iMac is more of a server now. And how I use my MBP is how I would use the iPad in the end down the road.

I would feel differently about doing the wifi iPad if there was a sync of the "news" apps that I love on my iPhone - minus the updates - unless I had a wifi point to use. But that has not been the case so far with my iPhone.

I am in the camp that is torn between the iPhone and the iPad. I can see myself not wanting the size of the iPad in some situations. But still would like the iPhone.

Sure $15-30 a month does not seem like much. But in the end - paying subscription fees on content that we have wanted add up.

A buddy at work that has worked for Apple said - there is no reason for ATT not have given iPhone users the ability to "tether" the iPhone to the iPad. And he is holding out till that comes... he was asked which unit he would like... he is holding out for the 3G for now.... but will only use it in wifi mode he tells me....

The Palm Pre Plus or HTC EVO .

Hey I am thinking on geTting the HTC EVO on June, cause it has Wifi Hotspot function and having an iPhone is like having two same devices, one bigger than the other. This way you will have the best of both worlds. I was also thinking on getting the Pre on Verizon, because they are offering the wifi hotspot function for free, right now and the pre is only $49.99 with a contract, sounds too good but it's true. But I think is worth waiting for the HTC EVO.
What you think?

jaillbreaking iPhone will give you Wifi hotspot

if your iPhone firmware is lower than 3.1.3 , it can be jailbreak and instal mywi app and enables you wifi hotspot. damn I wish I didn't upgrade firmware, .

Assuming you're in the US, the ETF is $175 and drops $5 each month. If you've had your iPhone for a yr that's $60 off your cancellation which brings the total to $115 which is what some of yall's bill averages. But you'd rather keep paying that $100+ a month because you're under contract? Makes no sense to me.

My AT&T family plan with 2 phones ( 1 iPhone and 1 regular phone is less than $115.00 per month) and that includes 1500 text messages. With the yearly rollover I always carry over 4,000 rollover minutes. I never had a problem with AT&T in my area. Besides, Verizon's network is WAY slower than AT&T and unless they have dropped the price, it's more expensive. They all have their problems but I'll keep AT&T.

This topic almost makes me not want to buy an iPad. I love my iPhone. It's been the best purchase I've ever made and I've never had any major issues with network coverage. I think it's a bit too early to plan on ditching your iPhones. The iPhone is just...convenient. It's smaller and way more portable.
