I know some people just don't get this idea, but I see this becoming an increasingly HUGE issue for Apple, especially as more and more people get iPads. I haven't used my iPhone like, at all, since the iPad came into my life. Yes there are times when I can only bring my iPhone, but really really ask yourself, how often are those times? Fortunately my cell phone is through my work so I don't have the burden of the bill, and so I won't be looking to get rid of it, but will I be all over the new iPhone in June if I have to pay out of pocket? Probably not. I have the iPad. And its brilliant. Do I need to check my email right now this second if I know I will be back home or work in a little while? Maybe sometimes. But could I live with a flip phone? Sure. We did it as little as 5 years ago. Hell, some of us lived before cell phones, oh the horror, or even email at all. :D Now all of a sudden we can't live without constant iPhone connectivity? Give me a break. Unless you are a heart surgeon on call, or something else like that you can live without an iPhone.

I just don't need to be connected to everything all the time. If I go to the store or the gym I don't need to be plugged in. If I go to dinner with friends, I'm engaging in real conversation.

I have my dumb phone, which I rarely use. Mostly just so my wife can reach me (which is why I usually leave it at home :D)
I have my iPod touch, which I carry with me everywhere. It's my watch, mp3 player, portable video player, game player, document folder, to do list, etc. Plus, I can log on to wifi networks.
Now I'm getting the iPad 3G which I will often carry with me, but not always. The 3G connection will be useful for those times (family vacation, perhaps a meeting) when having a mobile connection is something I can see being valuable. But, 99% I'll see that need in advance. I think it will be an extremely rare occasion that I will want a 3G connection when I don't have my iPad with me. Yet somehow, I think I'll still manage to survive.

This topic almost makes me not want to buy an iPad. I love my iPhone. It's been the best purchase I've ever made and I've never had any major issues with network coverage. I think it's a bit too early to plan on ditching your iPhones. The iPhone is just...convenient. It's smaller and way more portable.

Hear you there.... but $15-30 a month here and there adds up in the end for some of us...

In the end the extra money spent for both the iPhone and an iPad maybe the price I (we) pay in getting sucked in to great devices by Apple. LOL

I know there will be times I won't want to lug an iPad around, and that the iPhone would be great for as it has been. I just want to cut down on the bills here...

For some of us the cell phone is our only phone. LOL And the reasons that the iPod Touch is always with you is the reason some of us are torn on leaving behind our iPhones to make the switch to the iPad 3G leaving our iPhone behind.

I am thinking of ditching iPhone and att. My 3G won't be fully supported in 4, so I am thinking of going to either palm or android.

I get that. The difference is with a 3G iPad you pre-pay for 3G only when you really need it. For myself, and I suspect many others, it's nice to know I can pay for what I need without being locked into a two year contract. If I use it only 2 or three months a year, as I expect my usage might be, I can save close to $300 a year, virtually paying for the iPad in 2 years.

Sell the iPhone, a new one is due in just a couple of months. I'm doing the same, using a 4 year old flip phone until the new iPhone is launched.
