I've never sent anything for repair. How long does the process usually take? I just received the box to ship out today.

Do you guys think they will fix the CPU whine issue? Heat issue (I don't see how this can be resolved?) Also, some of the keys are not aligned. I hope they will take care of all of this...

Apple offered to fix mine to, but they said it might be out for more than a week and I can't afford that now. But if they can fix everything then I might have to find some time where I can live without it :) Keep us updated!

And she's off =)

Wow, I just called DHL for a pickup like 5 minutes ago and the guy came already to pick it up. I Hope they take care of all the issues. I didn't backup my hard drive because I don't have an external firewire hd which I should now invest in.

Spiffy... I'll let you guys know if they fixed the issues

Yes you really should. You didnt have an ipod or something? I called them yesturday to report the whine issue which for some strange reason it isnt whining today AT ALL ...and she told me she would send me a box via DHL. I backed everything up on my ipod. Im assuming theyre aware of the whining issue and have a solution for it. I asked the support tech If i can just get a new one, and she said no they were going to repair it. I liked that idea better than getting a new 1 because they can fix the whine. Imagine getting a new 1 and it has the same whining issues!

p.s. they told me 7-10 business days to get it back.

Nothing you can do now, but Apple explicity asks you to back up the data. Should have stated so on the sheet that came in the DHL box. Oh well, for next time :)

As of yesterday, all official Apple responses (Apple Care/Apple Store Genius Employee) was that the processor whine is normal. Supposedly, the latest board revision (D) has reduced the whine by 1 to 2 dB but not eliminated.

I just returned my MBP today for a refund.

If any of you can verify the whine issues have been fully addressed, then I will purchase a new one.

Ive got a Rev-D, I'd HATE to hear pre revs if mine is 1-2db reduced. So to those who sent their MBP in what are they gonna do to your system?

If I returned mine that leaves me Mac'less

So can anyone verify that the 2nd processor whine is gone? If so, please post the first 5 digits of your serial number. It should be higher than W8613.

I hope they fix it. I ran a program called QuietMBP and it fixed the whine completely, but the drawback is that it decreased battery life (when I turn it on, 30 minutes were chopped off use time instantly).

I still have some speaker issues that I needed to get fixed (whine is biggest issue though). We'll see...

Yes, I heard about that software. My biggest gripe is that you spend over $2K for a machine that you have sacrifice the battery life to get the noise down to acceptable levels.

Don't get me wrong...I really like the MBPs. But I cannot take the noise and will have to wait to repurchase one until I know the noise issue has been addressed.

I cannot agree with you more. The thought of buying a $2,500 laptop only to send it in for repair 3 weeks later is absolutely absurd.

Don't bother with the Apple Store

I took my MBP 2.0GHz to the Apple Store in King of Prussia, PA where I was treated horribly. Not only were they completely uninterested in helping me (the "Genius" told me my heat was normal without even turning my MBP on), I was fed dumb excuse after dumb excuse including the fact that my MBP isn't a laptop and was never designed to be used on my lap. I also enjoyed when I was told that since my MBP was the fastest laptop Apple ever made that I should expect it to be hot.

They also treated me nicely when they opened all the documents in my Documents folder and then launched all the Apps on my MBP at once so that they couldn't even shut down my personal information being displayed to everyone in the store.

I called AppleCare and they told me the whine is fixable. It's a logic board that needs replacing and that if I was concerned by the heat, they'd look at it especially since it will be in for the logic board anyway. Strangely the paper work listed my issue as issue 601 - Overheating, not any reference to the logic board.

To the person who didn't back up your HD, bad form. No guarantee you'll get your MBP back. If they replace it, they don't move your data. Always back up your data before you send it off anywhere even the Apple Store.

Everytime I have called about the processor whine, I was always told it was "normal". This is the first time I have heard of an Apple employee indirectly admiting that it is an issue by stating that it is fixed by swapping the logic board.

Very interesting. I wonder if this is a new revision of the board or whether it is the revision D which supposedly reduces the processor whine but not by much.

Mine will be going in for repair as soon as the box shows up - I've been told on the phone to make sure to back up my data, deauthorize my iTunes account and that the squealing noise will be reduced by 2 - 3 decibels but not removed and they'll in all likeliness replace the logic board.

I was recommended to buy Apple care while chatting about the issues, as in this case it's lucky my repairs will be covered..but "in future it will cost thousands to fix"..voice of confidence in their products there!

I still find that rather poor, if it's normal behaviour they should have a statement on their website to say MacBook Pros will make a squealing sound so you can make your mind up before you buy a very expensive computer.

All in all mine is going in for the squealing noise, misaligned keys with the return key getting stuck sometimes and a warping lid.

Hopefully it doesn't come back in a worse condition than when I sent it.

Lucky my ass! They're responsible for covering all defects for the first year.

I really dislike when sales people use "fear" in order to push an extended warranty, especially if they end up making the product look unreliable in the process. It's as if they're not even thinking about what they're saying.

For what it's worth, my PowerBook made two trips back to Apple for repairs (a new keyboard and a new screen) and always came back promptly and with no additional problems/cosmetic damage. I'm *extremely* impressed with how they handled it. I hope you'll have the same experience!!!! :)

Funny huh? Here's my take. I won't be getting my laptop back. I'll be getting a replacement. My MBP will be refitted with a new MoBo and sold as a refurb.

He said the whine will be gone. I never heard this 2-3db reduction. I don't understand why we have to get so many different responses!

My responses are based on a ton of "google" research and people's responses. I think there are a lot of responses because there is not a clear answer from Apple about the processor whine issue. Some people find it ok and others find it irritating. However, if you google for more information on the issue, people with brand new MBP still have the processor noise. Getting a new one at this point will not resolve the issue from everything I have read.

The biggest problem is how long will it take Apple to fix these issues? Remember that once you pass your 14 day window, you will need to have your MBP repaired. You can no longer send it in for a new one. So essentially, you have purchased a refurbished MBP at full price.

Will apple take your computer in for just a CPU whine? I can stand the heat but the whine would drive me up a wall after awhile. I got a week to make a decision to turn this baby in or not...

FWIW, it took Apple several months to address the horizontal lines issue with the new screens in the last batch of PowerBooks. I bought mine in Oct (the first day that they were available) and it wasn't until a month or two ago that people that shipped theirs in for repairs started getting their PBs returned with a new model screen that looked good.

Hopefully with the pressure of the MBP being their first Intel laptop (and that a lot of the media is paying closer attention to it), they'll find a fix for this sooner. :)

Here here. My brand new MBP has had more hands touch it in the last week than I've had hands touch me in the last month.

Apple, for $3000, you sent me a slut I never get to see.

It depends on the Apple Care person you speak with. Technically, they cannot take the machine back w/o a restocking fee unless there is something technically wrong with the computer.

You need to have someone in the tech support department agree that you have a technical issue with your laptop that is a manufacturer defect.

If not, you can return it w/in 14 days of purchase but you have to pay a 10% restocking fee.

Apple does not yet consider the processor noise to be a defect.
