I always had mine plugged in (for the whole three days I had it! though it was previously owned for a month) so I never heard the whine. I did have a lot of kernel panics, though, which is why I had to send it in. I sent it in on Monday and it's back in my hands today. I'm still at work but when I get home, I'm gonna watch out for the kernel panics and I'm gonna see if I get that whine.

The whine on my one is a continual noise, whether its on battery or on the mains - hopefully they can fix it to some extent.

I'll let you know when my one gets back to me if it's any better.

Kernel panics?

I guess that's what they're called? Usually when I wake it from sleep, I get the screen with a black box in the middle that says "Please restart your computer" in several different languages.

And I always have it on sleep rather than turning it off.

You need to have someone in the tech support department agree that you have a technical issue with your laptop that is a manufacturer defect.

If not, you can return it w/in 14 days of purchase but you have to pay a 10% restocking fee.

Generally, yeah, but there is another way. If it REALLY tweaks you, return it, eat the 10%, then contest it with your credit card company. I did that when the Apple Store tried to charge me 10% restocking to upgrade a poorly performing iMac, and had no problems.

YMMV.

All these posts are really scaring me. I was about to get the MBP to replace my iBook 12" G4. This thing never had me in any kind of trouble. Heat, noise, whinning, Nothing at all. I`ll wait till MacBook now. I dont really need the most powerful. I`ll settle for the least troublesome. Hope they dont screw up Macbooks too. And please announce them asap.

They will fix these issues. They have to as there are too many people complaining.

I do think they have already taken steps to address some of these issues. I would not be surprised if the MBPs that come out after the 17" MBP announcement will have some updated internals with fixes to these issues.

Grr. I got my MacBook Pro back yesterday and it says they replaced the logic board (I was getting a lot of kernel panics). I never had or knew I had the 'whine' problem until today. Ahh. Now I'm going to have to send it back again for the whine issue. And I noticed that it does get really really hot. I didn't know these issues before because I always had it plugged in on my desk. Hm. I should get these things done before I sell my 12". Sigh.

How its the quality of the repair? ie. scratches on the case, etc.
I am nervous about sending mine in for a keyboard replacement (and possible a whine reduction!)
FWIW, my PB had a keyboard replacement about 4 months ago and it came back in the exact same condition that I shipped it in.

No scratches whatsoever. It was in perfect condition when I sent it out, and it was in perfect condition when it was sent back.

But there isn't a fix for the processor whine issue???

When I called it in, I didn't know that mine had any whining issues because I always worked off the AC Adapter. And today I had it in my lap and working off the battery for the first time and noticed the whining and serious heat (I wish this excessive heat would make fat melt away, which then I would lay on a bed of early rev. MacBook Pros). So now I think I might have to send it in again.

Actually, I made a new friend out of an owner of an Apple Authorized store. Would they be able to fix my computer free of charge?

How about using the magic noise killer? It seems to work perfectly. Also, what are you guys telling the support people to send the machine in to fix the wHine (it's not WINE people, you drink that :) ). My guy said it was 'normal processor' noise.

The magic noise thingie just makes the noise less high pitch but its still very lough for me.

I just talked to the coolest apple tech he actually said "Tell them like "Yo! My machine is busted and I paid my good money for it and they need to keep it real and not charge a restocking fee!".

Was your drive formatted or did it arrive the same way you sent it? The heat is very annoying, especially if you use the MBP on your lap at times. The response I got from a "Genius" about the issue: 'It's not meant to be used on your lap... It's a Powerbook, not a laptop."

Actually, everything was the same. I turned it on and had my same old wallpaper on it and all my programs were still in there and the serial number is the same (which is good I guess in case I had bought AppleCare). But I thought they would completely reformat it or replace it, since we're asked to back up our hard drives.

It's just to make sure in case something happens. ;)

Yeah, I figured it was just a form of "disclaimer." I'm already expecting it to arrive formatted (even though I REALLY hope not). I already looked into buying a 250gb external hard drive just incase my MBP goes back to Apple again for repair

As of yesterday, all official Apple responses (Apple Care/Apple Store Genius Employee) was that the processor whine is normal. Supposedly, the latest board revision (D) has reduced the whine by 1 to 2 dB but not eliminated.

I just returned my MBP today for a refund.

If any of you can verify the whine issues have been fully addressed, then I will purchase a new one.

I got mine last this last Thursday its W8615 and I have no whine at all. It does get hot but no more than my dell that its replacing.

I lied (but not on purpose) I do get a processor whine I just can't hear it unless its totally quiet. I was using it mostly at the office up to this point and now I'm at home in my bedroom. It dosent really bother be too much my old dell made noises as well I think even when it was brand new. I'm not planning on returning it but if I did don't the charge a 10% fee? and will the even take returns on non-standard build systems?

Great, so the repair is on hold because they claim they "Need a part" but don't specify which part (Probably the logic board?).

I was hoping to get it back by this Friday as I'm heading to Las Vegas and wanted to take it with me
