I’m torn, I really like the shiny black. I pre-ordered the black, but I’m tempted to just switch silver instead. I’m coming from a space grey S5, which has held up well, but the polished may be a different story.
Here's the fun solution, why not both?

go to eBay and look at used watches. You'll see a ton of aluminum models that are super beat up. Nobody's losing limbs.. just gets more wear than you'd think.
the edges of my current aluminum isn't beat up.... well.... except for the dial thingy... that's beat up! Now the face as a couple knicks in it... which is why i got my 7 in stainless.... for the sapphire face and the pretty shiny black! i don't feel the knicks on the aluminum face... but i feel them.. it's my back up for when my SS is charging.

i'm hoping the 10 pretty, shiny black will do good for a year or two.... we'll see! at least it's about 1/2 the price of the titanium so i won't feel as bad upgrading earlier....

Series 7 since launch day almost 3 years ago… 23 hours/day on my wrist. Just like the first day.

I always read a lot of comments from people who “destroy” their aluminum models and I don’t understand what people do… I have also given it a few hits here and there.

same for me. I work out daily with it, take on very long bike rides. I think it’s sort of like looking up diseases via doctor google. You’ll see the worst conditions possible while all you have is a itch or a cough.

The 'deep' description implies light scratches won't got through to bare aluminium and stick out like a sore thumb, may even be able to polish out light blemishes.

Won't really know until the public get them and the inevitable, "I scratched my new watch!" posts. Or some YouTuber scratch tester gets their hands on it.

I would not recommend polishing or buffing this out.

the aluminum of my 4 look fine.... it's the face. i used to keep a screen protector on it... but eventually have up trying to keep one on it (they seem to only last a couple months before i needed to change it!). now my SS 7.... that still looks great! both the case and the face (well.... i still keep a screen protector on that.

If it's a thin a coating as the old Jet black iPhone 7 had then polishing is obviously not advised.
My initial comment was based on my assumption that the 'deep' description was referring to the depth of the coating. It was correctly pointed out to me it almost definitely inferred the black was a deep black colour not the depth of the PVD coating. 👍🏻

This is exactly my concern...
I pre-ordered it, but if I'm amongst the first who receive it, I might wait to open the box until it's a go from a YouTube video/experiment or something.

What's bad is, if it scratches, there's no other option for black. Hopefully it won't be another FineWoven party...
I'll probably do the same

How did you manage not loosing your arm yet? You seem to be terribly clumsy with it.
Some of us are a bit clumsy. We also do stuff like work on cars/bikes/boats/etc as well as home/garden projects where there's more stuff to bang into than cycling and gym workouts. :)

Fortunately the human body is pretty good at healing itself, a characteristic that watches do not possess.

OMG I bump into door frames\ so often! (and the first thing I do is check to see if i cracked my watch face! I don't know WHO put those doors there that weren't there the last time i walked through! lol! i drop my phone often, too...!)
LOL, this is why I quit buying aluminum models. The stainless/titanium + sapphire crystal models I've owned all survived any abuse I threw at them.

I wore my blue S6 while working as a printing press operator. It still looks better than some peopel’s watches they wear at a desk job. I’d say it depends on certain people..

I do a lot of things to. But gasping for air that a tiny aluminium ring gets hit by meteors is completely bonkers. Clearly those space balls are going to contact the glass first, that now even curves around and protects the area more, and get deflected before they ever would touch the ore part of your watch. (wich is rude, it came all the way!)

My guess is that all of you use the big version, because on the small version I cant even make out an angle where I would even hit anything metal first without loosing a limb as well.

Like, I am doing yoga with it and in some of the stretches the thing has face contact with the floor. And I only have two of the tiniest scratches despite it being "the bad" glass.

Have received my jet black version, I will pick up the Slate one later. Here is a picture, conpared to the S8 Space Black version (not Graphite, it‘s an Hermès). The Hermès looks more like grey in this comparison, that‘s why I think the Slate will be my watch. Jet Black does not reflect much light.

Jet black looks good IMO, I hope it will age better than on iP7

Honestly, the jet black looks great. I've tried the scratch test* and it still looks perfect.

* with a feather-duster. You think I'm going to risk damaging my 1 hour old watch. I'm not a "UTuber".

I’m worried about her the face, too. My aluminum 4’s body is still in good shape but the face have scratches. My SS 4 and 7’s sapphire faces are still perfect! (Ya…. I don’t know why o don’t trade in my old watches except I do wear an old one when the newest is charging!)
