Bigger Battery = Bigger Size and More Weight.

It's really that simple.

The 11" air could have had a 7-hour battery too, but it would be .5lbs heavier and another .5" thicker.

The Asus 1005PE has an Atom Processor that uses 1/2 the power of the ULV Core2Duo in the 11" Air. (5.5W vs. 10W).

It also weighs as much as the 13" air, while being 3" smaller in screen size.

It also comes down to walking around with this for 8 hours:

Or this for 5 hours:

Who's going to be using a MBA for more than 5 hours anyway? I think 5 hours on a VERY thin 11" laptop is very good battery life!

I fly all the time, and on a 14 hour flight to Hong Kong I might use my laptop for 2-3 hours... then it's bedtime :)

Sorry if there's a thread on that already, but 5 hours of battery for the 11 inch model is just plain terrible.

I was expecting something that could be a real contender to Asus EEE PC 1005 PEM (update) : 8 hours of battery life.

Of course, it's not thin ! But what is more important for you when you buy a laptop ???

For Christ sakes, what's wrong with you Apple ? I'm a big fan, but spending 1000 dollars on such a limited computer, just for the sake of looks ??? And when your battery dies, you can't just replace it yourself. Give me a break.

I'm really, really disappointed in Apple's strategy.

Not sure why he has to feel the need to trash the product. It's a product for someone who wants to sacrifice battery life to get the thinnest laptop ever to run Apple OSX.

If you want to compare it to a PC then it'll always lose in cost... that should be no surprise. You pay a premium for a premium brand. If you don't see the premium to apple, then you're not a customer, buy the PC.

Lenovo netbooks get 5 hrs of battery life and they have smaller screens, are thicker, less specs and have a battery sticking out the end. Because its a cheepie. Apple is expensive, but they sure do build quality computers :D

No kidding. Even on the trains in the bay area (CalTrain) they have tables with charger plugs.... my iPhone lasts about 3 hours when using constant data... my Virgin Mobile Mifi lasts about 4 hours per charge on constant data... so by the time the laptop dies, the peripherals are already dead anyhow.

At the end of the day, if you need more than 5 hours, the Air isn't for you. The pro will get you 10 hours. If you need a 500 GB hard drive, the air isn't for you, the pro is. If you need a 17" screen, the pro isn't for you.

Bottom line... clearly the response from people is that the 11" air is amazing. I think you're the minority if you disagree. It's not like apple is alienating you. They have the pro line which focuses on the max battery on the market today.

100% spot-on... When I run parallels and jump into windows and plug in a USB drive and listen to it go beep beep beep as it's "recognizing" ... yuck, such a painful experience!

Hey, if this guy wants to use a piece of crap (asus) for 8 hours vs. a real computer (MBA) for 5 hours so be it... It sounds to me like he just wanted to come here and stir the pot. Not that he's a troll but what better place to come and complain about Macs and get people worked up than here?

I love Macs as much as the next guy but I definitely think that some users on here take comments from others as personal attacks when the OP seems to be venting. I'm neither defending or condemning either side of the argument but I just think that people here allow themselves to get suckered into losing battles all the time with these type of posts.

To the OP: Not every model of Mac released is gonna be a match made in heaven for YOU!

To the rest of the MR community up in arms over these types of threads: Not every model of Mac realeased is gonna be a match made in heaven for the OP!

Both sides need to realize they are not gonna convince the other of anything... It only serves as entertaining reading for the MR users who can see what's really going on.

Some people just want to complain...

To compare these two is crazy. The Asus is a far cry from the MBA. No contest. Quality, OS, and on and on... the list of Mac advantages is too long to list.

There are hundreds of correct, yet different answers depending on who is buying the computer and what they want it for.

For Christ sakes, what's wrong with you Apple ? I'm a big fan, but spending 1000 dollars on such a limited computer, just for the sake of looks ???
Nothing is wrong with what Apple has done in designing this model. There is no perfect computer. Yet that said, the MBA is one stellar laptop.

Sony has an answer

I like what Sony did with their VAIO X. This one is even thinner than MBA (and much much lighter) and the battery life with standard battery is just 3 hours. But the laptop comes with extended battery that can be attached to the laptop. This battery gives 12 more hours of life (combined 15 hours).

hey guys, let's not feed the troll too much. raynolds, if you want to complain here about macbook air, I am sure the community is open to that. But your argument was weak in every aspect. instead of complaining here, how about complaining on the Asus forum, on why they are making the laptop so thick, and why the resolution of the screen is not as high, and why it can't run the OS you want, as we can clearly tell, that it is Mac OS.

Please complain over there and see what kinds of response. I think you have a legitimate complain, but you can't complain Apples to oranges, in this case, the orange being Asus.

Who is going to actually keep it on for 5 hours though? I do at home if I am browsing or something but then I also have access to an outlet. But on the go it is off or it is on. So what is the big deal?

The netbook the OP referred to is a joke. The MBA is a real ultraportable not just a netbook with an atom CPU.

The MBA has an LED-backlit display, aluminum thin case, real C2D CPU, an incredibly capable Nvidia 320m GPU, 4 GB RAM option (which Atom doesn't have), NAND Flash up to 128 GB on 11" model, Mini display port that will drive a 30" ACD, multitouch trackpad, and BEST OF ALL OS X!

I think the new MBAs are stunning and incredibly capable.

Take the advice and DON'T BUY ONE if you don't like it. you don't have to come and complain about something you don't even own. God, buy what you like don't complain about what you don't have.

Yeah, MBA has good battery life considering how powerful the hardware is

Don't forget is ahead in everything hardware wise except battery life

Not elegant enough and it uses a wimpy Atom CPU,
for reference a Pentium M @900MHz crushes a 1.6GHz Atom
Core 2 Duo is 50% better than Pentium M so 600MHz crushes 1.6GHz so it's 2.66x powerful.
1.4GHx2•2.66=7.46
so the weakest MBA CPU is 4x as powerful as the 2GHz Atom (actually considering the C2D has 6x the L2 it's probably 6-8x as powerful

This

IMO the obvious solution is for Apple to sell an external battery

Eh?
Now, who's REALLY using a notebook all the time ? Students. On a campus, 5 hours of battery life is just laughable.

Students with PC laptops during my day had 2.5 hours of battery life. At the same time unibody MacBooks had 5 hours.

Otherwise, you can get the lowest model Hypermac external battery which gives you additional 13 hours of power and it weighs only 0.8 lbs.

Scottsdale,

I have popped in the air forums here and there for the last year or so and read many of your posts.. Are you happy with the updates? I am curious to know if you are Blown away, Disapointed, or somewhere in the middle....

I had been waiting since I sold my first gen MBA to get another. I was waiting for a better display and the glass trackpad. I bought a 13" 128gb friday and I love it so far.

not sure if you watched the keynote, but they did mention that they used much stricter battery tests for this macbook air, so it will be closer to real world usage

there is almost no situation in which you'd actually get 8 hours out of that eee pc, but with this macbook air you would (supposedly) get very close to achieving that 5 hour mark

not sure how much stricter their testing is, but its save to say that if it was tested in the same way as the eee pc, the battery life rating would be higher
