Pretty much this. It's amazing how much Apple underestimated the demand for both the Pencil and the Smart Keyboard (also very annoying)

I must say in fairness even I am pretty shocked at the demand, and like Lioneagle this is a product I have been eagerly anticipating since Brushes launched on the iPhone and none of us had yet heard the name "iPad". It's truly shocking to me that the Pencil is so popular, stores are selling out in what appears to be minutes - presumably a large number from people who just happen to be in the store at the right time. It can't all be the crazies like us wasting time posting about it online and calling stores. Regular people seem to be buying it.

And to all you whiners, they aren't asking for $500 for the pencils. They start the bidding around $150 and let the market (impatient rich people) decide how much the pencils are worth to them. It's upper middle class and rich people with the disposable income that have bid the prices that high. Scalpers are not trying to target broke college students and artists. They're looking for rich folks who want a luxury toy, and don't want to wait. Blame Apple, their screwed up launch created this environment where these pencils are going for $400 - $500. This is all on Apple.

Please open your eyes before posting...thanks!

I just can't fathom people actually paying 4/500 dollars for a 99 dollar item. Especially the pencil. I am impatient as **** but even then, hell no! Maybe, 50 dollars over but not 3 or 4 times the amount. No thanks.

What's worse is now that it's well-known that there's a shortage, rather than just us enthusiasts that really need a Pencil, every scalping &*(#$@ will be all set to snipe them beforehand, so they can scalp them.

I hope the market is flooded in a week -- but I'm sure I'm dreaming.

I'll be sending a complaint letter to Apple tonight. I'm about to get off the botched launch circus train for good.

Just got off the phone with Arrowhead Apple Store. None in stock, but they had several today.

I know this is completely legal and people can do whatever they want but it makes me so mad! Those of us on here who want to actually use these things can't get one and someone who just wants to make a profit ripping off people gets 2 or 3! UGH!

I'm a long time lurker and specifically came here for updates because I was stoked about the iPad Pro, especially Apple Pencil. I know launches can be precarious as of late, so I wanted every advantage. I'm a software developer and part time student and I was planning to use my iPad Pro for mobile development (Coda, Prompt, Transmit, VPN, etc.) and taking class notes (Notability), graphic design and vector drawing (Procreate), etc. Plus I have grandfathered unlimited data from AT&T. I wanted to get rid of my current iPad and MacBook Air. Any serious development work would be done on my desktop, or I could VPN into my home environment and SSH into my Mini Server.

Back in 2011, I sent an email to Apple specifically asking for this type of device as well as a stylus. This was man and his machine coming together.

I ordered iPad Pro, Smart Keyboard, and Apple Pencil 23 minutes after it went live. Got my iPad Pro the next morning with in-store pickup, and Pencil says Nov 20-30 delivery.

I was hoping the forum rumors were true for Friday in-store launch so I went to try my luck at opening on Friday and almost got a Pencil. The employees kept saying they had no stock, but I saw 6 Pencils floating around. Turns out they were for online orders for in-store pickup.

Anyways, after waiting my turn for a stock check, an employee randomly came up to me and said "Here is your Apple pencil." My heart skipped a beat. It was like seeing the Minotaur. I threw my wallet out there so fast, and right as I was about to pay for it he asked me, "Are you Ed?" I said, "No."

Immediately he took away the pencil and said, "I'm so sorry, I'm with the wrong person!'" Way to dash somebody's dreams! Ed was behind me, and I found out a few minutes later that Ed ordered 2 Pencils.

I tried to buy one off Ed after he finished, but he said. "No, I need both."

Whatever, they're his. I'm not entitled to anything. Still waiting on the employee who was supposed to show up and help me, I spotted a guy buying 4 Apple Pencils. That was encouraging at first, cuz I still technically hadn't been helped yet, so I was hoping they had a ton in the back.

Finally the lady came out to explain that they had no stock to sell, and that all the people picking up orders were online orders. I tried to buy one Apple pencil off the guy that bought 4, but he said no as well, that they were for his business. I offered him a good markup on it too, and he still refused. I asked him if he had a magic number in mind, he still refused.

That was a sad day!

I still have no Apple Pencil despite all my efforts. I stay entertained following this thread and watching scalpers make 400% on Ebay. And to all you whiners, they aren't asking for $500 for the pencils. They start the bidding around $150 and let the market (impatient rich people) decide how much the pencils are worth to them. I probably have more reason to be angry with Pencil hoarders and scalpers than anyone else, but I'm not. It's life. Grow up.

My best bet is waiting for my order in the mail, and hoping it comes early. Till then, I chill and laugh as I read these forums and try to guess the grey market price for these elusive Pencils.

Wow sorry for your experiences but I have the same delivery window as you and our pencils will be here soon! If it's any comfort eBay is full of buyers that are scammers as much as the scalpers, they will get theirs. I won't even sell anything on eBay anymore because I've been burned so much.

More on topic I think some may start to see shipping begin in the coming days I hope.

Those posts never showed up on my Ebay searches, so I stand corrected. *Some* scalpers are straight up asking $500. All the ones I'm watching (5 of them) have dozens of bids that drove the price up. Even so, the price asked matches roughly the max bid I've seen. The only person that is going to pay that price is the intended market (rich impatient folks). Still Apple's fault.

As @Lioneagle has already mentioned, you can only blame Apple for this.

Contrast this with the iPhone 6S / 6S+ .... although not by any means overflowing with stock, supply was much closer to demand. I had hoped it would be the last time Apple would have supply chain issues. Clearly I was wrong lol.

I'm actually not sure if even the Apple Watch had similar issues with availability. Or at least, it wasn't such a tease by given you e.g. the watch without the strap. Pretty annoying.

Actually with businesses evaluating the Pencil, they essentially have "unlimited" budget to purchase stuff. It doesn't necessarily have to be rich people buying from the scalpers, just business proxies who don't care about spending money since it's the company's :p

Has anyone tried just waiting in the store until they receive a shipment? Tell a manager you'll be waiting until they receive their daily shipment and you're first in line.

Has anyone tried talking with the business team? Someone said the business team are hoarding the pencils for businesses.

I've talked with the business team at our local store who I have a pretty good relationship with and they've said repeatedly it's first come first served. As this is a more business intended tool I had hoped they could hold some for business customers but unless someone else has heard differently that doesn't seem to be the case.

I don't think businesses would buy one-off pencils from EBay at $500 a pop. It's not like any particular person has a batch of 20 to sell, due to scarcity. Seems inefficient to me... unlimited budget or not. But people do what they do, I guess.

None in the Apple Store cherry hill NJ or walnut st Philadelphia. However-if your looking for the smart keyboard, I was able to pick one up from the cherry hill store. They said they had a handful for hose interested.

The Apple Store Green Hills did not have any pencils or keyboards and does not know when they will get any.

Apple Store Irvine, CA has none and said that the ten nearest stores have none either. Irvine said they have not received a single shipment.

Incidentally, after dealing with a couple other local stores I've learned that it helps to be adamant about having them actually check for stock. Most employees in those stores I've spoken to have given false information: a popular refrain is that the pencil hasn't been released and won't be for 4-5 weeks. Obviously they're confusing estimated shipping wait with release date.

I wish I could just go to sleep tonight, and wake up like Christmas, with my order in "Preparing for Shipment" instead of processing.

I think calling Apple Stores isn't going to help since the stores will not reserve the Pencil for me... Even if they tell me there is stock on the phone it will be sold to whoever asks for it in the Apple Store.

People getting pencils when they're still waiting for their iPads, people getting multiple pencils... Ugh. I just want the one Pencil and keyboard so I can portably bring this thing around. Right now, I'm using the Logitech K811 keyboard but I'd rather not carry the iPad Pro and a separate keyboard around. Oh yeah, and no pencil :(

I just want one pencil so I can use it to take notes in lecture, the entire reason I bought the thing....but no luck :(
