When you transfer the photo from Photos to Affinity photo, is the RAW shot supposed to convert to a .jpeg? I thought the file would remain as .dng.

What I found: If I share the unedited RAW image to my iPad Pro, it transfers as DNG; if I edit the DNG in Photos on the iPhone and then share to the iPad, a converted JPEG with the edits applied is shared. If I revert the edited DNG on the iPhone to its original state, then when shared to the iPad the DNG is sent.

So, I haven't tried Affinity on iPad yet. I just "air-dropped" the dng file to my mac and edited with the desktop version of Affinity.
This is what I noticed as well.
@nepalisherpa I just tried airdropping from my iPhone to my Mac and it stayed as a .dng.
Does anyone know of a way to drag .dng raw photos from the photos app to desktop without the image converting to .jpeg automatically? Air dropping photos isn't something I see myself doing especially if they're in bulk haha.

From a Windows perspective, I connected my Pro Max via cable and was able to open DCIM and do a direct select and copy of the DNG files to my laptop.

Totally forgot about this method! This will have to do if iCloud won't allow direct transfers without conversion. Thank you :)

Another path - in the FileBrowser app. I opened Camera Roll and could copy the DNG files to my laptop over an SMB connection.

ProRaw is fantastic!!! The stars in the sky look so much better also.

Here's a cut at it. The iPhone's JPEG was more difficult to work with compared to the RAW image which only took a few seconds of editing. Oversharpening in an original is hard to deal with.

Thank. you for taking the trouble to post this. Very interesting. The ProRAW sill has more detail and depth, but the jpeg now looks much more pleasing. In the end, if the jpeg is more trouble to process, then might as well shoot ProARW.

Yes. The RAW was seconds to process, the JPEG minutes and I still didn't like the end result. My normal flow with my other cameras is to shoot RAW and transfer to my desktop environment so I'll do the same with the iPhone. I'll use the JPEG setting when I want a quick shot to share.

Does the images turn out the same when shooting without apple proraw as with it enabled, before editing ofcourse?
My understanding is the proraw will likely look worse than the standard apple photo until you edit it. So if you don't want to edit your photos, don't use proraw.

First standard and 2nd edited in pro raw

still trying to get the right balance colour wise so it's a work in progress. pro raw also doesn't take long to even make a small difference so you don't really need to adjust every setting. sometimes just using the sharpness is enough to make a difference from the regular photo.

Yeah images do come out not as bright and sharp so yeah use regular if you aren't going to edit

Yes, that would be the optimum workflow. By the way, have you tried processing the ProRAW on the phone itself, in the native Photos app? If so, how did the images turn out?

Yes, it does a pretty good job but I prefer to use Lightroom with a large monitor and store the images on my NAS.

I too would prefer to process it on a larger screen with more sophisticated software. But good to know it can be processed reasonably well on the phone itself too, when required. Thanks!

I posted this over in the other Pro Max photo thread but this is a ProRAW, edited in Lightroom on a laptop:

I'm really pleased with the capabilities of this phone with ProRAW.

To add a note to this - I like taking pictures of this particular house as a test for my cameras. One, because it is a real beauty when seen in person but two, because it's a good test of the camera. The combination of white and dark areas are a challenge but he real test are the vertical white slats - they tend to generate purple fringing and are hard to resolve. The phone's camera and ProRAW handled the resolution and fringing remarkably well.

Sorry to poke in here with a complete noob question, but I’m picking up my 12 Pro
max today and this thread is really inspiring me to up my photo game now. So, noob question: what are the drawbacks of shooting in RAW on my new phone? Are the files bigger/take longer to process when I snap?

Thanks for the inspiring photos and info everyone!

No live photos, no portrait function, image size up to over 30MB, processing takes a little longer i would say about 1-2 seconds.

in raw Live Photos is not possible and file says can be about 26mb so a lot more than your standard photo so they will take up more space and as deifie said no portrait mode option but you can use the front camera for selfies though

amazing thing is even if there was no night mode you can get some amazing shots.

I have set pro raw to be my default setting as I don't take tons of photos so the ones I do take will take secs to edit anyway to make it how I want. once you start using pro raw going back to the regular photos isn't easy from my experience as proraw really does spoil you when you view these photos.
