This is always going to be a tough choice. Tech tends to move so quickly that it's easy to wait for the "next" generation because it's only so far off and if you didn't get it close to the release then you feel like you might as well wait.

The question really boils down to can you do what you need to do now with what you have now? If so then wait and don't automatically assume that you're even going to buy the yet to be announced iPad. The best thing to do is to get the most out of every purchase you make if you can push your upgrade off to a late 2020 early 2021 iPad you've saved yourself over a year of time and thus drove the "cost" of your current iPad down.

Of course, there comes a time where upgrade is necessary to speed up workflows and improve performance. This is when the upgrade starts to move from the "I want a shiny new thing" to a "I actually need this shiny new thing because of x, y, and z reasons".

Ultimately though, if you "want" something enough you can almost always find ways to justify the purchase with a "need" even if the need is a bit of a stretch. Best of luck!

No hardware issues with mine..both are fine

Happy about your experience!

My experience wasn’t so good as yours, caught the iPad non-working touch hardware problems on 2 iPads (one of them is official Apple replacement). And I’m absolutely not alone - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/unresponsive-screen-ipad-pro-12-9-2nd-gen.2121051/ (not just the 2nd gen, almost all of them), https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...pro-10-5-screen.2115037/page-34#post-27448612 are just a couple of examples of what’s going on with modern Apple (I’m even not talking about bending issues which are real). The worst fact is instead of fixing those problems they pretend the problems do not exist.

Well put! I had the same dilemma a few months back when I was considering the 11” to replace my current 10.5” and, more recently, when I was thinking about “upgrading” my phone. Well put indeed!!

When the digitizer on my Surface Pro stopped working, I decided to get an iPad Pro. Originally I wanted to get one of the new 2018 11" ones, but decided that I I didn't want to spend that much yet, because I wanted to see how using only an iPad would work out for me. However, I was surprised to see how many people were selling 2018 iPad Pros on eBay because it didn't quite suit their work flow, or other similar reasons. While that number may have gone down after the announcement of iPad OS, you should be able to find a good deal on one.
I wouldn't expect a new one this fall (I could be wrong, if course), since Apple doesn't update the iPads quite as frequently as the iPhone. But if you're mostly doing light photo editing and editing videos for YouTube or something similar, the iPad Pro 11" with 1 TB will definitely work. Especially if you're planning to do any projects that could earn revenue, I would say go for it.

It's always so tough to decide when to get an iPad now, especially the Pro models. We're on a "maybe every year, maybe not" cycle now with these. I sold my 10.5" iPad Pro last summer so that I could get as much value out of it as possible before the rumored FaceID models came out. I was heartbroken when there was no sign of them at the first fall event. I had already gone over a month without my iPad Pro and was really missing it. When they finally did announce them at a separate event, it was a huge relief. I thought I had made a major mistake.

i cringed when I saw the $1k price. But after taking the plunge on getting the ipad pro 512gb, it feels different compared to using my 2017 ipad pro, maybe cause the screen is just bigger, but the graphics are awesome and the speed is good. Plus USBc is awesome, most of my devices are USBc.

New ones are likely to be released after 9-12 months. In a rare case you might find them released by October/November 2019, but that’s unlikely. 2020 March or June is more like it.

If you plan to upgrade each generation go for it. Otherwise wait for 5G or at least 2020 releases.

Really depends on your budget. If you want to upgrade every 1.5-2 yrs, upgrade now. If you want to keep each device for 3-4 years then now may not be the ideal time.

The major mistake was to assume that Apple would talk about iPad during an iPhone presentation. They have not done that often, if ever, to make sure the focus is on the most important product.

Yeah.....I don’t know why I thought they might stuff the event with two major releases. But at least I got my wish pretty soon after.

Currently debating getting a new iPad Pro myself

Is there expected to be an updated iPad released this year? Or is the next version next spring/summer

There were already about 30+ posts - maybe read them first to get a sample of the available answers. New ones won’t differ much anymore.

Check the buyer's guide on the top of this website. iPad Pro is neutral because we're well into the life of the device but still probably a year away

I currently have a 10.5” iPad Pro and I’m waiting until at least the next generation. My only pause with the current generation honestly is the RAM. Before iOS 13, 4GB seemed sufficient and I’m sure they current generation will run splendidly on iOS 13, but I see myself having a LOT of app pairs and apps in slide over and I get a decent amount of app refreshes on 4GB.

6GB is my new minimum with 8GB being preferred.

If it were me, I'd put iPadOS on whichever one is NOT mission critical at the moment. I always have too many projects going on my iPad to risk any data loss in a beta OS.

And yes, FaceID is a game changer on iPad.

Same here, I don’t play with a beta on a device that I need for work.

How is Face ID a game changer for you, if I may ask? Do you find it much more convenient than on iPhone, is it a different implementation?

Cheers!

I think it's just the ergonomics of it for me. I'm not usually holding my iPad with one or both hands when I'm using it like I am with my iPhone. I usually have it in laptop mode with the Smart Keyboard Folio, or I have the cover folded around back and the iPad is propped up on something in front of me. In all these different situations, I'm either typing, doing something with my Apple Pencil, reading a book, etc. and FaceID just seems to interrupt my tasks less on iPad.

It's not that I hated TouchID or anything--it was great. But now when I use someone's iPad (or iPhone for that matter) that still has it, I feel like it's just slowing me down. Not such a big deal on iPhone, but I do a LOT of "creative" type of work on my iPad and I hate having my flow interrupted by having to reach over and give a fingerprint.

It doesn't matter for Apple Pay--you still have to reach up and double click to pay for something. But with logins and secure sites and things like that, and even just double tapping the spacebar to unlock, FaceID was a game changer for me.

It’s def a game changer for me. I still dont like it on iphone but on the iPad Pro. It’s very quick.. especially with all the sites I have to log in to get work done. I really like that it’s quick and painless even if you are in a darkroom watching and using your iPad Pro...

Honestly a just solid 4GB of ram available is plenty! You definitely could never use all of 6GB even if you tried. The problem with the 4GB iPads is, they really only have 3.69GB available before it is even turned on. After iOS is up and running you’ve got around 2.8GB available. So it can all be used up pretty easily.

So, I can assure you 6GB is overkill and more than enough in a iPad Pro.
