What strikes me, as illustrated here, is how so many are comparing the new 24 with the old 27 as opposed to the old 21.5 the new machine is actually replacing.

For years we were used to it, but seeing them side by side the black bezels of the old 27 are really jarring whereas the bezels of the 24 blend with the silver chassis and the room in the background. And given the way the light bezels reflect the ambient light of the surroundings I suspect it would work just as well in a darkened room. To that end I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the forthcoming bigger iMac, meant as the actual replacement for the current 27, has light coloured bezels. I suspect it would work just fine with either Silver or Space Gray although I’m sure quite more than a few heads around here would still explode.
Good points! I really love seeing everyone's new iMacs, both to get a sense of the colors and also because the photos demonstrate the responsiveness of the bezels/glass front to the ambient light. This responsiveness to local lighting is one of many smart things about the new design.

Apple eliminated the lowest tier iMac 21.5 ($1399 in Canada) which was really outdated except for finally having an SSD as standard. The lowest tier 24 is $1599 CAN compared to the mid tier 21.5 which was $1699 CAN. The lowest tier 24 can outperform the best 21.5 you could buy. The current 24 line is better in most every way over even the 27 except the best configured 27 and that only in some respects.

When I look at it from a retail perspective AND an informed consumer perspective the 24 is not only a vast improvement over the 21.5 it replaces yet also offers much better value. Indeed unless you absolutely need to have a 27in. screen then the 24 is a much better value over the current 27.

I could be wrong, but I strongly suspect the entry tier of the forthcoming big iMac will be very close to the highest tier 24, following a similar pricing structure as before.
I agree. I have a 27" 2019 iMac with a 6 core i5 and the M1 is much better. The only thing that I don't really know how I will feel about, is the smaller display. I am still waiting for my iMac to arrive, so we will see..

Here's my studio apartment study/work setup!

Back looks awesome! Almost better than the front haha the one thing I noticed though is the Apple logo on the back doesn't fit perfectly, it's almost as if the aluminum cut out is slightly smaller. I would suggest the yellow - it's beautiful in person! View attachment 1778947

So far size has been great, I'm not a power user and don't do much that requires a larger screen so for me the 24" is perfect. Been playing Disco Elysium and a bit of school work and the size hasn't bothered me (yet). Here's a pic of the very fingerprinty 27 next to the 24, looks massive when next to each other

This is super helpful to see. I've got a 27" one right now and keep trying to visualize the size difference. I do feel like I could manage 24" but I'm pretty spoiled with the real estate I have now...

The thing is that with the 27" iMac I have to move my head left and right if I want to see the whole screen. I guess that with the 24" this will not be necessary. I believe that the 24" display is better for me, but as I wrote before I am not sure..
That to me is a plus about the 27". I can have several documents open and give each a generous amount of space on screen. I tend to sit with my display a bit more than arm's length from my eyes, so I'm not physically having to move my head to scan the display.

That's a perfect example of why one person's usage and another's might create entirely different conclusions about suitability.

Personally, I liked the fact that on the 27-inch I could have a ton of stuff open and it was all right there, though being close-up, it was not always pleasant to spend hours continually visually touring the screen, and being so close to my seating position, I did get a stiff neck many days.

By comparison, the 24 is far more comfortable and workable, and I am finding different ways to deal with the slightly reduced resolution. At a push I could always tag a second screen onto it for those days when I need more space, but I haven't needed to yet.

What gets me is how different the colors look, from the photos, in different lighting situations. I’ve been looking through this thread trying to decide on a color, and it’s impossible. Every color can look good, or not so good, depending on the environment.

I’ll just have to go to the Apple store and see for myself. Thanks to all for sharing!

For me this is not very comfortable. I prefer to have everything in my viewing field.

PS: My credit card was charged tonight, so I guess my iMac will be soon get prepared for shipment. I ordered on May 14th a 16GB, 1TB pink iMac with a Magic Mouse and a keyboard with numeric pad.

Thanks for all the pictures! Still waiting to see what they do with the 27". Once things open up here, I want to take a peak at these colours myself in person. Hard to decide. The yellow/gold looks really good from the back, but can't decide about the front. That blue looks dark in the back but baby blue from the front? The silver looks boring but also right! The silver might be something that just completely disappears into your surrounding. I am worried the other colours might stand out too much over time or not age as well.

I may grow into the new design more, especially when I see it in person. However, I remember when I first saw the Late 2009 iMac for the first time online and then in person at the store. It really blew me away. There was nothing like that at that time. I still have my Late 2009 iMac and the internals are beyond ancient, but it still looks right on my desk. I hope I have that reaction when I see these new M1s in person.

Estimating the distances from the seat to imac, I can't stop thinking imacs shown in many of the setups are too small to be comfortable for my usage.

Can't wait to see what Apple brings out for a 27" replacement.

How on earth does a iMac screen end up looking like that, not a touch screen device lol ^^
It’s amazing to see the condition of some computers, laptops or whatever when people bring them in for service. They can look grimy, caked with dust or look like they’ve been left out in the rain. And then some will profess, “I take care of my things. I can’t understand whats wring with it.” 😆

Are people really happy with these little keyboards? I immediately replace my 2012 iMac keyboard with a Kensington and then a Logitech solar keyboard and MX Master mouse for the past five years or so. Have a MX Master mouse for my Macbook Pro also.

Will no doubt continue to use the Logitech solar with the 24" iMac I'm going to get, in green which will blend in nicely with my light pale green walls in my office.

Keyboard is very fine, keys are excellent, except that I find that the middle flexes too much. I put some duct tape underneath.

I ordered a keyboard with numeric pad. I don't like using such a small keyboard.

PS: my iMac is preparing for shipment! :)

The size is just right for me, and there is space for a wireless trackpad and mouse right next to it.

Been a few weeks with my iMac now and I absolutely love it.
I don’t use it to its full potential. There’s no video editing or lightroom happening on this Mac! But it’s been great for watching 4K content, having somewhere to sit and enjoy web browsing and to have a desk space I can just come to and relax.

I originally had the desk the other way so the red back could be seen when I walked in. But decided to change it up and place it the other way as I had some old Philips Hue Light Bars that were doing nothing and thought they could provide a nice back drop against the wall.

I also added Cat Peach which I seen another poster do 😁.
