Gotta ask, what's in the Rickenbacker case?

So I got mine today:
I love the color and I was very impressed with the packaging of the iMac. The 24" iMac replaces my 27" 2019 iMac and so far I am impressed. Everything works very well and fast. What impressed me the most was that restoring my Time Machine backup (around 350GB of data) including my home directory and apps took 6 minutes to complete!!! I have a Samsung Thunderbolt 3 SSD for Time Machine, but I have done such restores before too, and they took at least an hour. (on Intel Macs)

Update: here are my first impressions, coming from a 27" iMac:
  • I love the design so far and I don't mind the white bezel at all. It actually feels better in my room, since I have white walls..
  • Restoring from TimeMachine was incredible. In 6 minutes my system was up and running
  • The speakers sound better than on my 27" 2019 iMac
  • The display is great and I got used to the size. At first the difference is pretty apparent, so if you feel that 27" is even too small for you, then don't get this iMac! I love it though.
  • The keyboard feels a bit different than the standard Magic Keyboard. Maybe because it's new..
  • I absolutely love TouchID. It works fast and is really great.
  • I love the packaging and extra attention to detail that Apple has put here.
  • The power brick is big but I think it's great that it also has Gigabit Ethernet, which I also use on my iMac.
  • I understand what Apple did with the design. The pastel color on the front helps a lot, since it doesn't dominate and allows you to concentrate on the screen. The two tone design is very nice. I also do not miss the Apple logo in the front at all. It all is part of the design language that Apple chose.
I am sure that in the next days I will have more to say and write, but so far I am loving it. My iMac came with 11.3 preinstalled, so I had to manually install the 11.4 update.

Super nice setup, question? Where is that desk pad from and where can I get it! Thanks!
Thanks. It’s this mat, but I got it on Amazon UK.

Thanks, unfortunately I can’t find anything like that on Amazon US, Everything looks substantially cheap looking.

Hi everyone.

When Apple announcing the iMac I absolutely didn't consider taking silver. After seeing the finish in real life, I fell in love with it. macOS renders superbly well on the white outlines that blend into the silver frame. It also goes with any interior decoration.

Let me be clear, I find all the colors fantastic (especially yellow). But there's something timeless, classy, and so Apple style.

If I was the "Room Rater" I'd give you a 10/10 for the side angle and multiple plants.

The Mac could have been any color.

I second that. We originally bought a blue one but even though the color looked nice on screen, when brought into the office the pastel blue in the front didn’t look as appealing. We opted to get the traditional silver and wow, so impressive. Keep it clean!

Are people really happy with these little keyboards? I immediately replace my 2012 iMac keyboard with a Kensington and then a Logitech solar keyboard and MX Master mouse for the past five years or so. Have a MX Master mouse for my Macbook Pro also.

Will no doubt continue to use the Logitech solar with the 24" iMac I'm going to get, in green which will blend in nicely with my light pale green walls in my office.
Yeah. I prefer it to full size. I never used the numpad and all the extra keys are kind of useless to me. The home/end stuff can be done with command or option and the arrow keys. The smaller arrow keys are easier to reach without moving your whole hand. Also I prefer having the same layout in my desktop as my laptop.

I just don’t see any added utility to the full size.. for me. Some people can’t live without the numpad and full size arrows and that’s fine too.

What strikes me, as illustrated here, is how so many are comparing the new 24 with the old 27 as opposed to the old 21.5 the new machine is actually replacing.

For years we were used to it, but seeing them side by side the black bezels of the old 27 are really jarring whereas the bezels of the 24 blend with the silver chassis and the room in the background. And given the way the light bezels reflect the ambient light of the surroundings I suspect it would work just as well in a darkened room. To that end I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the forthcoming bigger iMac, meant as the actual replacement for the current 27, has light coloured bezels. I suspect it would work just fine with either Silver or Space Gray although I’m sure quite more than a few heads around here would still explode.

Agreed. There is no good reason to expect the big iMac to have black bezels or to be branded “iMac Pro”. It’s like people forget the 21.5 inch iMac had black bezels too and was replaced with white bezels. The iMac has never had a different design and bezel color between the small and big variant. They’ve always been the same other than performance and screen size.

Everyone expecting a different design and/or bezel color are going to need to snap back to reality before Apple announces the big iMac or they will be very upset.

Hello everybody

I am a newbie in this forum. I am french and I use Apple devices since the beginning of Apple. It was in 1983 I believe.
Currently I am using an iMac 27 inch late 2012 CoreI7 24Go RAM and 1To Fusiondrive.
I think to replace it with an iMac M1 16Go Ram and 2To internal SSD. My iMac is mainly used for LightRoom, PhotoShop and DxO for Nikon RAWs post processing.
I heard new iMac M1 makes a lot of noise and overheats a lot when used with these software.
Do you agree ?
What do you think about this issue ?

Thanks a lot

Very random question: what is the width of the stand? Not the part that sits on the desk, but the vertical side. It looks wider than the foot on the old iMac and I am looking into some external drive mounting options.

I just measured - it's 5 1/8" (Same width as the base)

I don't own the 24" M1 model, but I am sure "noise/heat" problems was only the basemodel and not the model you are looking for, since two fans instead of one. Else look it up on youtube, there should be a video from maxtech.
