I’ve seen some posts about this but a lot mention glitchiness with the custom driver.

Do you get glitches and if so what type and how often?
There’s a little visual glitchiness on occasion, in particular with things that are transparent, but I’ve made that go away by simply reducing the transparency. Functionally everything has been great though!

Your post screams 'it is here!' and front and center is a pic looking up the nose of a sullen looking 20-something male.
Did you order him online? How much did he cost? What's the return window?
lol, thats me and i'm 19 (almost 20). i got the mac pro complete in box for $100 on ebay, put in a $135 rx 580 that was also complete in box, $13 xeon x5675, $20 for 16gb (4x4gb) ddr3 ecc ram, and an old nvme samsung ssd i had.

on another note, i am going to buy a m1 macbook air here in a couple days since im getting my fafsa refunds (i dont have loans, just grants so thats my money and i dont have to pay it back). im gonna get the one with 8 core gpu, 16gb ram and 1tb ssd. we will see how it stacks up, it will be my first ever "modern" mac, as well as my first apple silicon mac. all the machines ive had prior have been at least 10yrs old with intel/powerpc.

as for the sullen thing, its very rare for me to be in a bad mood, i just dont show much emotion on my face :p
My main point was, this is a thread talking about legacy model macs, and you decide to take a pic that makes your face (for better or for worse) the centerpiece of the picture. Not sure what you were going for there.

I haven't been paying attention about external drives, but how is the installation on an external boot drive with a 2010 27" Radeon iMac? I might do that as an experiment, if it's an option.

I have both FireWire and USB 2 options. (Too bad this iMac doesn't have USB 3.)

I ran mine off an external SSD for a while to test it out, and it worked as well as any other external boot option. No real issues other than USB2 being slowish, but good enough for testing. Then when I was assured of it working, I just stuck the SSD inside and it's quite peppy!

i bought a near-perfect condition early 2008 15" macbook pro (macbookpro4,1) for $80 on ebay, complete in box with a brand new battery. it is supposed to be here monday, i am excited :D
no dents on the lid or anything, only cosmetic issues is a small dent on the corner of the body, and a small speck of dust under the screen visible in the corner. pretty darn good for a machine of this age.
and its the last pre-unibody (g4-style) mbp ever made, which is my favorite design they ever had. it will match my mac pro very well

What about the GPU? Does it have the green dot?
no clue, just seems like the seller upgraded and were selling off their old machine - doesnt appear to have been used much either
but for $80 i am willing to take the gamble as it is my favorite model. if it ends up dying it will cost me probably about $200 to have repaired by dosdude1 which is a price im willing to pay in that case

im trying to decide between mojave or monterey oclp for it, im thinking maybe monterey

Sounds like a great find - interested to hear how Monterey and OCLP fares on one of these…

i am gonna put in my adata 240gb ssd, so it should be very speedy with it

Yah. SSD on these really do make a difference. I run a WD Blue 500GB in my A1261.

Still, the SATA bus is still SATA I and won’t get to take advantage of the SATA III throughput of pretty much all SATA SSDs out there these days.

my new (to me) early 2008 15" mbp running snow leopard. i put in 6gb ram, 500gb samsung 870 evo ssd, and fresh thermal paste. thing looks like its only been used for a couple of hours in its life, there was not a single spec of dust inside it or even the fan. came complete in box too with the original charger, manuals, even the protective sleeve thing it came in new, and even has brand new newertech battery! :D

It was, I think, a pic of the ultra-rare Apple iSon, in white, which went on sale at the flagship Apple Store in Palo Alto, then was quickly retracted — all without press fanfare — for about three days in 2002. Five were sold, and all but two got recalled by Apple.

Like the G4 Cube, Jobs had his occasional product misfires. Given the almost immediate halting of sales, the iSon was clearly one of them. 🤷‍♀️

I've been kicking around getting a 17" Pro for a while, and finally pulled the trigger on one Saturday. Mid 2009, 3.06GHz model. It had 10.7.0 on it, which...I'm still confused by, but whatever. 😄

As you can see I'm loading 10.11 on it now, mostly to test. It's already maxed out with 8GB of RAM, I plan to replace the stock spinner (which is at least a 7200RPM unit) with a big SSD, then I'll likely dual or triple boot between 10.6, 10.14, and maybe Windows 7 as well.
