Late 2010 MacBook Air, 1.4GHz, 2GB RAM and OWC 480GB SSD.
I bought this specifically to run Snow Leopard, but I am amazed it also runs Linux Mint 20.1 64bit pretty well ;)

Cheers :)

Very nice! Good to see that you finally landed a working machine. :)

Out of curiosity, is the iSight and the specific Apple keys (volume, brightness etc) recognised?

For those of you that have a 32bit EFI on a 64bit processor, here's a link to some 64bit Linux ISOs that have been adapted to work - https://mattgadient.com/linux-dvd-images-and-how-to-for-32-bit-efi-macs-late-2006-models/

Cheers :)

Hugh

Thanks - my Mac Pro 1,1 immediately comes to mind. :)

iSight is detected but not tested, volume keys work fine and brightness keys react but don't work.
This could be because I am using proprietary NVidia drivers, because they worked fine with the open source ones, but I was having other troubles with those ones.
I made some executable scripts with varying brightness levels as a workaround.

Cheers :)

Installed a 500 GB Solid State SATA Drive several years ago and still running daily today.

The portability of these 11 inch MBAs is unrivalled, even today.
The 12" MacBook wipes the floor with the 11" MBA in terms of portability. It's smaller, thinner, lighter, and has a much better screen to boot. The silly single-port design and that poor excuse for a keyboard spoil the fun somewhat though.

the unique screen ratio
16:9 sucks. It's a shame that's pretty much all you can get these days (famously excluding the MBA/MBP).

How did you get your Late 2009 Mac Mini to upgrade to Catalina, or did you break it? I can't get mine to go past El Capitan.

Go here - http://dosdude1.com/catalina/ Read everything, carefully. Also, there is an entire community to support "unsupported Macs" here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-10-15-catalina-on-unsupported-macs.2183772/page-1 to 555. It can be quite an adventure and a great learning experience. Catalina 10.15.7 Build 19H524 runs competently and is quite useful.

My two early Intel machines, a 2009 MacBook on the left and a 2008 on the right. As you can see, the 2009 still sees quite a bit of use. I primarily use it as a music production machine, but it also makes a very capable decently modern Mac in general. :D
Nice machines man. Good to hear about the 2009, I have one of those laying around with a dead logic board, just bought the parts to replace it. Will hopefully enter my workflow somehow.

Added a KVM switch today. Its dual link but it will not drive my Cinema Display for some reason. Oh well, maybe at another time when I have more cause/interest to devote to it. For now, I can swap between my MacPro and my work MBP. Makes it easier than moving over.

Spent about four hours working on this, getting it set up. Only, there will be a complete and total teardown coming soon. My wife wants this giant hodgepodge eye sore out of here so she suggested a new desk that can fit everything once the stimulus money comes in.

Considering I've had the current desk since I was 14 (1984) it's probably about time.

Well, but that's the wrap, so to speak.

Y'know what a small and light laptop is really good for? It's certainly not for graphic design or video editing, much less 3D rendering. For watching videos, you'd ideally want a larger screen. For audio, just use your phone.

But small computers are excellent for writing—taking notes, answering emails, composing essays, etc etc. Things I don't want to do on a phone, but which absolutely don't require a powerful CPU.

Which also means the keyboard is everything!

Quoting myself to add new info.

It would seem that to work with a 2015 MBP I need a Mini DP with USB active adapter. I found one on eBay for $60, shipping from China. A1086, seller says they've only used it once or twice.

s-l500.jpg

I was looking for a dual-link DVI adapter or male to female cable so I could connect my CD to that, after having run this A1086 into the work MBP. But every cable I saw showed a max resolution of 2048 by X. The CD is 2560 - which had me thinking. This is probably why the new KVM would not display a signal on my Cinema Display. The switch could see the monitor, but not display an image - because even though it is dual link the cables connecting from my Mac Pro are limited to 2048 by X.

Which makes total sense. It means that the cable Apple is using (with the FW and USB cables) is more special than your standard DVI cable.

So, what it means then is that I have to pull the CD cable out of the back of the MP and plug it into the A1086 if I want to drive the CD from the work MBP. Annoying to switch cables that way, but it's all going to work out. It does mean I need to swap one of the DVI cables from another display to another port. The work MBP only has one more display port and that's HDMI.

So, I have a male HDMI to DVI adapter on order - also an Apple adapter. It's only going to be driving a 1680x1050 display so not a big deal here. Ultimately, it will mean the MBP is driving all three of my main displays (but not the TV).

Hopefully this all coincides with the rework I have planned for the desk.

@eyoungren

What KVM switch is that, and how was it connected to the computer(s) when it didn't work?

Any genuine dual-link DVI cable is able to do 2560×1600 - if yours doesn't despite being labelled dual-link then it's fake. The DVI cable coming from the 30" ACD is just a standard dual-link cable.

And yep, to run that ACD from a Late 2008 or newer MBP you need an active Mini-DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter. Like that A1086. :)

Now you made me do the research I should have done before buying it. Ugh.

It's a Startech SV231DD2DUA - which apparently supports a top resolution of 1920x1200. So then…mystery solved.

It's my first switch buy, the only one I could fnd with a power cord and within my price range at the time. Ah well, next time I know to do better research.

You'll also need two dual-link DVI cables to hook up the computers to that (if none are included).

Use it to share a second monitor between the MBP and MP? :)
How do I know which cables to get (on eBay). I looked for dual link cables yesterday at my CD's resolution but all the cables I could find (that were labeled dual-link) mentioned 2048 by X as the max resolution.

I thought about using both at the same time. I suppose it's possible if I change the hard coded keyboard shortcut on one of them. Otherwise, I don't know how both will react. Of course, I could just use the physical switch. Guess we'll see. That would give me all four displays with the MBP though.

It's our TimeMachine-Backup server and it stores all the .dmg files of operating systems and programs I occasionally need.
I upgraded it to 2GB of RAM and a 1 TB HDD. A 2nd-HDD-adapter is on its way to add a second one.
Sadly, the USB ports are cursed and no USB device will work as soon as Mac OS is loaded, but it will get the job done until I find a cheap '09 model.
