On the early betas the sidecar icon would stay in the menu bar and I would be able to launch from there. Now when I disconnect I need to open system preferences to launch sidecar every time. Is there any way to get the sidecar icon to stay in the menu bar even when I disconnect?

Thanks!

My initial impressions about sidecar:
It can be buggy but when it works it's almost magical! For some reason cmd and - which is a common shortcut in a lot of applications will always lead to Sidecar closing down and then opening up with the function complete. I don't know why that is but it does happen!
Aside from the bugs though you can easily work with pro apps without feeling like you're compromising.

I compiled everything in to a video so if you want to you can watch that.

I am watching the video now.... you didn’t have any issues with pressure sensitivity (having to press too hard for pressure sensitive apps)?

I see you used Zbrush - for me, I have to press much harder to get stronger strokes than I have to on Wacom Intuos. I’m using a 3rd gen iPad Pro, too.

Nice video, btw!

That is true. I get the same impression that I need to press harder.
I'm thinking of adjusting the pressure sensitivity on ZBrush so when I'm using the iPad it registers correctly.

Could be also a bug thing? Not sure.
But definitely pressing harder is a thing with Sidecar

I fear Apple thinks this is normal and expects others to adjust.

You can adjust overall sensitivity in Zbrush and it helps. Not perfect, because you have to either do it on a brush by brush basis or turn on “use global settings” for each one and set in in options.

And apps like Photoshop don’t even have this feature. I hope that developers update their apps once Catalina is out.

Apple certainly has a spotty record on developing a feature in the long term. I hope they don’t neglect it but I won’t hold my breath!
I also don’t think we should rely on developers much. It’s a niche feature so it won’t be that high on the list. But you never know! We might be pleasantly surprised!
Either even in its current state Sidecar is quite good! It certainly beats waiting for the much promised mobile version of Photoshop!

My iPad screen starts timing out after some time on its own while using sidecar. I have to touch the screen after some time to keep the display from fading out. Is there any setting to control this behavior?

Hmm... Interesting.
I don't have this issue. The screen stays on as long as Sidecar is active. I didn't set up anything in a special way so I'm not sure why you have this issue.

The processor is an NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB.
The 2012 iMac is the oldest model supported by Catalina, which suggests that Apple will probably drop it from the 2020 or 2021 release of macOS. It does't seem worth investing in a new graphics card, even if one is available.
It only appears to work wired and even then is not really a useable feature.
Updated the iMac13,1 to Catalina Beta 7 (19A546d) and the iPad Pro to 13.1 (17A5821e). Reapplied the beta6 patch from your post #137.
Sidecar starts without error, but still not really useable.

I haven't been able to use Sidecar since the 1st betas. Now it says I have no devices, even if I have my iPad plugged into the Mini.

Is it working wireless or still only wired? Why not really useable?

PS Maybe test this patcher on beta7 file: https://github.com/pookjw/SidecarPatcher
Only works wired. With Bluetooth connected, Sidecar flashes up on the iPad for a moment, but then disappears and breaks the Bluetooth connection.

Tried the patcher, but did not help. According to the description, it only removes blacklisted Macs from a plist.

The only part that appears to work is the pop-up keyboard on the iPad that can be used to populate Numbers or other text apps. I don't have a pen or any of the graphics apps that Sidecar supports.

Overall, not worth persevering with; as stated in an earlier post, I'm glad I did't pay money for this.

@jackluke patch for beta 6 is not working for me with beta 7 :/

When I try to move windows to the iPad Pro 10.5 the screen turns black

edit: it was a problem with the USB port after all...I tried with the other and it's working :)

PSA:
If you install iOS 13.1 beta 2, Sidecar will stop working until you install an updated version of Catalina beta. Unfortunately, that version of Catalina is not yet available.

Sometimes that issue is related to a possible messed up cable with internal wires twisted or loose connection due to unpowered usb port, or even an iPadOS device with too less charge (below 30%).

I confirm instead that using "iPadOS 13.1 beta 1" Sidecar was still working even with a non-updated version of Catalina, but after upgrading to "13.1 beta 2" the system returns a message which tell to upgrade to next macOS, however it's not a patch issue, but something else they have changed from iPadOS side.

Yes, this was in the iPadOS 13.1 beta 2 release notes.

Any ideas why the late 2014 5K iMac doesn’t support sidecar? Thx!
No hardware HEVC encoding support

To put it another way, your 2014 5K iMac takes several times longer encoding HEVC than a 2016 12" MacBook does.

So, since Side Car on the latest iPadOS beta doesn't work with the current beta of Catalina, when do you expect the next macOS beta? Anyone has any idea?
