I received the apple 11 inch folio today. Nice quality as I would expect.

For those interested I tried it with my 10.5 ipad inside and it just slips in the 10.5 leather sleeve okay so I’m glad I can continue to use that. I doubt it will fit with the new keyboard folio though.

Still no idea if it would fit or not right?

Just had chat with Apple and they say smart COVERS are coming soon *phew*
Apple Chat/Support/Retail has absolutely no idea on stuff like this. They told me at my local Apple store when I got my 10.5" iPad Pro that Apple brand silicon back covers were coming out for that model "in the next month or so". Apple obviously never released those and never had any plans to.

Yup, I agree .. spoke to a different person and they were very nice but utterly clueless. They suggested I get back in touch in a few weeks to see if anyone knows any more lol (In other words she got to be helpful without doing anything!!)

The retail and support people find out about the new products the same way we do--via keynotes.

Ofcourse it's coming. They just want to sell the folio first so people feel forced to buy some kind of protection or smart wakeup/stand for the ipad so they can earn more money.

I'm certainly not buying any iPad till there's a smart cover available. Wether Apple themselves or someone else offers onee.

Not so sure about that. I mean, they had the smart cover from day 1 on all generations before. Not sure they'll ever release a smart cover

I’m not expecting they’ll release one. I get the impression the magnets aren’t in the right place for it. I don’t know why they chose to do the magnets the way they did, but I suspect it has to do with the pencil. Maybe there were issues if the person put the Smart Cover connectors over the pencil’s charging magnet? IDK.

Agreed--I could be totally wrong, but I don't remember Apple ever releasing branded device protection weeks or months launch--the sole exception I can think of being that iPhone battery case. What you get at launch as far as Apple branded cases/covers, is usually what there's going to be for the time that generation of hardware is current.

What I find interesting is that the first iPad Pros had Apple branded back silicon covers, the second generation didn't (unless you count the 12.9" version that still kind of fit on the 2nd gen model, but wasn't really designed for it), and now the third gen has the two folios to choose from.

For my iPad Pros, I have always liked having both an Apple Smart Keyboard cover AND a regular Smart Cover on hand so I could switch them out based on the situation. I had an Apple Silicon Back Cover for my 9.7" and a Tech 21 back cover for my 10.5" up until I switched to the Zagg Rugged Messenger case. The folio options eliminate the need for all that malarky. If you're not the type of iPad user who types a lot but wants protection, there's the Smart Folio, and if you want the integrated keyboard and back protection, there's the Keyboard Folio. I think it was meant to appease three customers: the people who want Apple designed back protection, the people who don't want to use keyboards, and the people who do want to use keyboards and also wanted Apple designed back protection.

Also eliminates the need for me to own both. The keyboard case is now flat, so I don't have that stupid ledge to worry about when I'm carrying it around.

Ok, folio arrived today and it’s lovely. It’s light weight (a tad heavier than the just Smart Cover but not much) and it’s very easily detachable of and on because of the magnets. I’m still hoping (yes, I know it’s highly unlikely!) that my Smart Cover from 10.5 Pro might fit but if it doesn’t this is fine and much less bulky/annoying than I had imagined it to be. I would like other colours though!! White yuck!! That wishy washy pink ick!! Charcoal grey soooooo boring!!
Looking forward to the actual iPad now that the cover situation is sorted either way!! :)

Cool. Could you please let me know if the 10.5 works or not once u have your iPad? Thanks

Folio is nice, I just appreciate seeing the back of the iPad and the Folio is boring in that sense since it's a blank back (not even the apple logo)

I wish I felt the same way. I know from experience (I have a Surface Pro) that I don’t like when the keyboard is folded back and the keys are exposed. It just feels too weird in my hand. And I don’t like watching video with the keys in front of me. I wasn’t a fan of the previous keyboard cover, but it met my needs a lot better than the new folio ASK.

Yup no problem - chances are it won’t but I’d be delighted if it did

I thought about that too, because I don't like feeling the keys on the back when I'm watching video or drawing either. I think as long as I'm in a situation where I don't think the iPad is going to get easily dropped or knocked to the floor or whacked by something, I'll probably just pop the folio completely off if I'm doing something that doesn't require the keyboard. There is some merit to using the iPad as Apple designed it, and I'm really determined this time around to not slap a bunch of extra layers and weight on it by way of third party stuff. I'm going slim and sleek, and sometimes maybe even cover free. (I will still be using a tempered glass screen protector though. Those keys on the smart keyboard, if they are similar to the old ASKs, are NOT soft.)

My SmartCase portfolio just arrive and there is no doubt that is is only help onto the device with magnets along the edge of the bottom. Not sure how well this will work, we will see on Wednesday

The marketing videos make it look like it's a pretty strong connection on both sides. Hopefully that's the case.

Just received mine as well - LOVE the material they used. Less soft-touch and more smooth so it won't show fingerprints as much. And I like that it's full protection without the typical style Folio case.

That's great to hear--previous Apple Smart Keyboards have had the tendency to start looking pretty grimy after a while, even though they were pretty durable in general. It sounds like this one will have less of that.

For $80 it feels really cheap to me. Especially the back of it. I just ordered one of these and we'll see if the almost $60 extra for the Apple brand is worth the price.

Really? I looked at the back of mine after handling it for a few minutes and I could already see grease/finger markings on the back. I loved the smart covers but right now this thing feels like a bit of a rip off for $80.

I read somewhere there are magnets all along the back of the ipp to hold the cases in place.

I’m really hoping Apple releases a Smart Cover. I’ll probably return the Folio Case. When I ordered it I didn’t catch the fact it wasn’t just the Smart Cover. Very disappointed.

When you fold it back to expose the screen I wonder if the cover will also magnetically hold the opened flap in position?

Hard to judge. Paperclips used to find the magnets, I though magnets worked better with ferrous metals

Yep, got mine yesterday and magnets are built into the edges of the back. Not sure how well it will hold but we will find out on Wednesday.
