There are terrible bugs with mounting and unmounting USB disks. Surprisingly, Tenfourfox works great.

Nice config, how about noisy ? And speed of load for example Xcode ?

Hi! The G5 is sharing the Cinema 30” with the Mac Pro so not much test right now. I’ll add the Cinema 23” so no more need to share the Display. About noise, nothing strange. I have another hard disk inside the G5 and will compare 10.6 to Leopard or Tiger.

I did not test anything else besides opening System Preferences. Some of them don’t even open.

THX¡¡¡¡¡

It already works at last!!!!!! And it is also extremely fast! It is a pity that Apple killed it, because it is incredible how fast it is!

That if the client version 90 has many bugs.

The bugs that I have found are the following:

- Network preferences: Share: when activating it does not respond.

- USB: USB drives are not displayed on the desktop.

- Finder: View as large icons does not show the text. If it is put into list mode, they are already displayed.

- Dashboard: The widget is activated but sometimes it closes unexpectedly.

Anyway it is impressive to see it work (my configuration is a Dual 2.3 g5 ppc970mp) with 8gb of ram and HD sata 8mb buffer (very normal).

If I can help more I would love to do it.

Same thing here with Finder icons showing no text. Solved on list or columns.

USB drives are shown on the desktop after choosing on "go to folder" /Volumes/ as said on previous post.

I opened disk utility, secondary clicked on the drive, and clicked open. That triggered the Finder to open it.

// In /var/log/system.log
endless restart cupsd (no ppc, copy from 10.5 fixed)
endless restart ntpd (no ppc, copy from 10.5 fixed)

// Some hangs
Sharing, Safari - update_dyld_cache for ppc does not help significantly, but Apple.com load with problems but load ;)

// Other issues
VLC will not work without QE - no video (((

// QE from 10.5 (Doesn't work at all)
Copy ATI drivers from 10.5 - no help, but ATIRadeon8500 present now in kextstat ;)

Sleep definitely doesn’t work. It’s crazy that even on a PowerBook with no graphics acceleration, performance is equal to or better than 10.5.8. Even in TFF.

// On eMac, reboot won't complete after dark screen, machine was hang ))))

Hi @Edgecrusherr and @ScreenSavers,

As I mentioed in a previous post you have to replace
the ImageIO.framework inside the ApplicationServices.framework
with the one from Leopard.
That will fix the "crazy" images.
See my porst #149 and #187.

Best regards,
voidRunner
@vddrnnr I found that even up to build K549 (10.6.8!) the ImageIO.framework still contains PPC binaries. But I have not been able to "convince" the system to boot with those replacements at all. (I tried with 10A222, 10A380 and the 10K549).
Could you have a look, perhaps you are more lucky ;-)
Will pursue this further myself, but time is the limitation here right now.

Hi @Larsvonhier,

The problem is probably on the frameworks on which ImageIO depends:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreFoundation.framework/Versions/A/CoreFoundation
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/CoreServices
/System/Library/Frameworks/Accelerate.framework/Versions/A/Accelerate (compatibility
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/CoreGraphics
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/ColorSync.framework/Versions/A/ColorSync

Are all of these on those builds still PPC?
Can you try and replace them?
Does booting in verbose mode show any errors relating to framerorks?

PS. Lars do you have any system ( G5 ) with a Geforce non-6600 that you can
send me the system.log, install.log and ioreg contents? Thanx

Best regards,
voidRunner

Will check the PPC´liness of the frameworks you mentioned and try to replace them also.
edit: 95% of those frameworks are still universal in 10.6.8 !
(just mds mdworker and windowserver (unfortunately!) binaries are intel-only)
What about all the dylib libraries? Are they platform independent? If not, how can it be found out if universal or not?

Verbose boot just reveals that before window server can be started (with newer ImageIO than 10.5.8 to 10A190) several kexts unload and system stalls, but without actually crashing.

Attached there are the ioreg dumps and logs from two G5 systems; one with FX5200 and one with 6800GT cards.
Geforce kext does not load, but NVDAResman and NVDAHALxx do. Had it also the other way round while juggling kexts from 10.4.x and 10.5.8, but never got CI/QE. When Geforce kext loads, window redraws are a bit more responsive, but it is hard to tell without direct comparison - most noticeable is that the rounded window corners redraw a bit later while moving the windows than without the Geforce kext.

Hi @Larsvonhier,

Can you try this.
It's an evolution of the Nocturne app.
In preferences set to hide desktop and then activate "Switch to Night".
Test it on a system without QE/CI and tell me what you think about
the grahical performance :D

Best regards,

Looks good on G4 PowerBook, not slower than without it. If shadows are off, it‘s a decent speedup!
(I‘d use it in Nightshift settings as that fits my taste better than any inverted colors.)
Thanks for sharing!

Hi guys,

I've got SIMBL built for 10.6 PPC up and running and I'm porting
part of a SIMBL plugin I've found to work on this version of OSX/SIMBL ( 0.9.9 ).
The plugin Is winBuddy all props to it's developer w0lfschild ( ttps://github.com/w0lfschild/winBuddy ).

@Hughmac it's running from the start I had no problems with it.
I'm running on your DLSD I don't know if othe PBooks aren't.

@Larsvonhier You have a DLSD too right? Is your's running?

Best regards,
voidRunner

I'm trying it out on an iMac G5; no Airport and no Bluetooth detected.
BT I have now with a USB adapter, but none of my USB Ralink devices will install, yet ;)

Cheers :)

Hi Hugh,

On my G5 I'm using for wireless a USB dongle from SMC
the SMCWUSB-G.
It's working "fine" with the drivers from ZyDAS.

Hi wick,

I can try and do a CCC sparse image.
Right now the installed system uses 11G so worst case scenario it will be
a 11G download for the fully running system that just needs to be
"extracted" to a disk partition.

PS. even with the glitches I found the system seems rock solid lets just hope
we can get the required frameworks are there. My next step will be to run
the Xcode installer ( the one that is in the snow leopard server installer ).

PS2. The Xcode installer starts ;-)

PS3. The Xcode installer finished :)

PS4. Xcode runs and we have Xcode 3.2 :D

Best regards,
voidRunner

Did your install of 3.2, by chance, get stuck at the end with persistent error messages of:

May 9 10:58:12 glaciologia /private/tmp/scripts.HRcj/./postinstall[1209]: ln: //Print: Entry, :/usr/bin/xcrun:1, Does Not Exist: No such file or directory

[…]

…and so on? I checked to verify there is an xcrun executable under /usr/bin, and there definitely is. I briefly considered bringing over the xcrun from Leopard, but wanted to hold off on doing until asking you and others at home with using Xcode.

This is something I’ve not been able to get around.

Thank you, I have that dongle as well but haven't tried it yet as I thought Tiger software would be too old.
I will try it later, and also make room on my PB for a Snow Leopard install ;)

Cheers :)
