Any theories on this one?
Did a DMG restore of the 'working install' of 10a190 on an SSD with this eMac G4 800 OC'd to 900.
The Snow Leo Beta shows up in the open firmware boot selector, but its nearly instant panic during boot.
I looked a little in the thread but I can't find any real info on the G4 eMac beyond it "worked" with the 700Mhz model which is generally identical to this one.

I then used CCC inside Leopard to do a restore of the working install again just in case my DMG restore had an issue.
No change.

Fun facts, the ODD PATA port seems to run in DMA Mode 2 / PIO 4 as I can only get 12.5MB/s read/write performance (using dd write test of zeros) from the SSD connected to what the ODD was using which has a 40 conductor IDE cable, perhaps if i had used a 80 conductor cable it would have been faster but i don't have one laying around at this point to try.

The internal spinning disk hits 40MB/s read/write (which I had upgraded to a 320GB Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 drive back in the day.

Considering the 40MB/s speed from the spinning disk and google it sounds like that must be an Ultra ATA/66 connection with an 80 conductor cable as it was doing more than 33MB/s but less than 66MB/s. Further googling confirmed the ATA/66 connection.

I am a little bit surprised that there was essentially zero gain from the SSD, I can get about 45MB/s out of it if I'm lucky, I was really hoping that it could have been able to get closer to 60MB/s but it is what it is I guess. Maybe it handles random I/O better now, who knows. All i know is that most of the time in 10.5.8 the CPU is pegged at 100%.

If it’s not a corrupted copy of the dmg, it could be that the particular model requires a ‘personality’ or kext that the other tested machines do not. I would suggest a few things:

1) Download again and be sure to select ‘erase’ when performing a restore using Disk Utility
2) While running Leopard, view the currently loaded KEXTs on your system and compare them to the ones included in the extensions folder of 10A190 (particularly any that were patches from Leopard).
3) Try 10A096 client or server - you may have more luck

As an aside, if there is enough interest, i may upload a pre-prepared dmg of 10A096 which includes some of the fixes discussed previously to increase the options available for people not able to manually modify the developer seed.

MD5 (SL 10A190 System.dmg) = 34611fa3fe8705ec90c93efefbfe568c

I set up a new SSD in Mojave with APM and restored the DMG using Mojave.
That panicked.
I then used CCC to restore the DMG over the top of that same partition.
That panicked.
I thought it was odd that AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext was even mentioned in the verbose boot, so I tried removing it. Which did stop it from being mentioned in the boot process but still panicked the same way.

I restored the 10a190 installer ISO to another partition and added bootx to /System/Library/CoreServices, but it too panics, but it complains about something like no driver for this platform IIRC.

I'm not sure how it would behave differently using the 'erase' option, this was a new un-used SSD, but I suppose I'll give that a go. If that doesn't bear fruit I guess I'll be comparing kexts.

I did a 'scan image for restore' of the DMG, it passed, I restored and used the erase option.
Same panic.

What about a Titanium G4 PowerBook ? That has I think PCI ?

We’ve been over this. AGP GPUs from ATI (like Mobility Radeon and Rage) do not have hardware-accelerated QE/CI on the SL-PPC beta. This is documented in the WikiPost.

All Titanium PowerBooks have AGP buses for their GPUs, and they’re all running ATI video cards.

I'd like to think it wasn't a corrupted DMG, it was downloaded via Torrent.

Can you confirm MD5 for me?

When you used CCC, did you run it via Block Copy? If not then give it a try with that selected for the destination volume you’ll be using. Likewise, if using Disk Util, an image with the bootable volume will need to be scanned for restore first (an option under the menubar) before using the Restore tab.

Ccc wasn’t a block copy, it was the standard backup and replace anything on target that wasn’t on source.

when I did the dmg restore last night I used disk utility and it passed the scan for restore option And I restored using erase.

still panics.

im wondering if the dmg is bad as /sbin/launchd is a zero byte file Causing the error 8 panic.
I replaced the zero byte file with one from the 10a190 install disc which “file” reported it having both intel and ppc code.
panic changed to still be launchd but error 88 instead of 8.

You will need to Block Copy from the source image to the destination volume. Try that, and let us know how it goes.

This is how I've done it in Leopard.
I didn't feel like running another restore at the moment as that takes time so I just grabbed the log from Disk Utility.

Isn’t that what the restore is doing when using disk utility?

I advised it as a process of elimination, nothing more.

My next suggestion is to consider using the 10A96 client build from the WikiPost on page one and following the steps discussed on the next couple of pages to successfully install on and boot with your eMac.

Also, as he‘s been successful with getting it to run on an eMac 700MHz, @Larsvonhier may be able to advise on specifics related to that hardware. I only have applied experience installing and running this on PowerBook G4 DLSD models.

Found a different copy of the pre-installed system elsewhere online.

My previous attempts have been using the 5.2Gb version, I'll try to find some time tonight to see if I can get the 3.2Gb image to work.

That being said both versions of this seem to have all of /sbin filled with zero byte files.
At least they look to be zero on the surface but du sees size to them.
