I'm curious. Can someone please tell me if you're able to change the audio device/input that dictation uses by default? I have a great microphone and interface that I can use with facetime and skype, so I should be able to use this for dictation, right? Can someone test this and reply please?

Thanks, Joe

Yes dictation works with whatever microphone you hook up.

Any word as to whether the Dragon Dictate app works under Mountain Lion. The native stuff looks nice, but I need the extra functionality of the Dragon software.

Same problem here.... can't get it to work at all..... just get the three dots flashing and then after a while goes off with no text on screen.

Dictation on my iPhone/iPad works fine (connected to same Wifi network).... does ML use a different server?

Works perfectly for me. Only issue is quotations - they work just it puts a space after the first one: " hi how are you" instead of "hi how are you".

You are not with Virgin by any chance are you? only asking as friends of mine down the road have a different supplier and all the features are working fine for them and i just thought it might have something to do with Virgin as i have had problems with iCloud in the past and it turned out to be something to do with Virgins permissions?

I am in Manchester and am on Virgin. Dictation works fine on iPhone/iPad so don't get why would only be blocked on desktop????

Like you say i can only assume that the desktops route through a different server as it is classed as static and possibly mobile devices use a different server.

I have just tried the dictate on my iPhone & iPad and it works fine on them? Strange

When you had iCloud issues, how did you get sorted?

I'm really not in mood to call Virgin CS and try to get someone to understand the issue only to be told they have no idea!!!

Works great for me. Only problem i'm having is that it mistakes "Callie" or "Kelly" when i was messing around with it.

I called them through the day and got the case escalated and i was told that they were aware of the issue as other people had reported it, and a day or so later the problem was resolved!

So lets hope Virgin have the same problem with their own Macs and enough people report them same as us!

I will call them tomorrow if it is not resolved over night and i will let you know on here if i find anything out!

The voice recognition itself works very well. However, the new dictation function is useless to me for anything longer than one sentence. Having the recognition being made in the cloud is not working for longer texts, because you need to see the text type out as you speak. Also, having to turn the recognition on and off for every chunk of text, and then wait for the result to come back, is not very efficient.

I'll stick with Dragon for now. But I had hoped to be able to use Dictation instead, as Dragon is a bit bloated, i.e. takes a long time to load and uses a lot of resources.

Honestly, I am writing this using the dictation program in the new Mountain lion. It appears to be working fairly well, and it doesn't misunderstand many words. It is a little weird to get used to dictating everything, including punctuation. Therefore, my sentences are worded strangely. Of course, is easy to make corrections, you just find the word that's wrong, hit the FN button a couple times, and then say the correct word.
