I hope this will be the future desktop line up:

Mac (Home Desktop, Games)
Mac Pro (Professional Desktop, the choice for content creators)

Mac Mini (Home Desktop, entry level, basic home use, photos, e-mail, web etc)
Mac Mini Pro (Semi-Pro Desktop, Perfect for home musicians)

iMac (Home Desktop, Games)
iMac Pro (Professional Desktop, the choice for content creators).

This would make alot of sense. Especially with yearly updates.

Not from Apple. But you can hope. ;)

Most people don't need the Pro line and Apple is losing all of them.
That's the problem in a nutshell.

Apple are offering nothing for those, like me, who do not need (and cannot afford) anywhere near genuine Pro level specs, but who need (and can afford) more grunt than the current Mini offers, and who have no interest at all in AIOs.

However, eGPUs may well solve that problem enough to make it workable. Assuming, of course, that Apple continue to offer the Mini. A very open question at this stage, despite Schiller's claim about the Mini's importance to Apple.

Kind of disappointed. I need a new few more mini's and already sport good monitors. Im in that boat, I have 2 monitors and the mini is a perfect fit for me. I don't really need any dedicated graphics, but updated cpu, ssd, ram is welcome.

Specially having new usb.c push. This refresh would have been very welcome.

Ideal world ( for me personally ) would be

Mac Mini with a Quad 4.2Ghz Kaby Lake and Integrated Graphics only, but with an HDMI interface.
2 x TB3 offering eGPU support
4 x USB3 ports ( not fussed if A or C style )
Support 32Gb RAM
256/512Gb SSD
Built in Ethernet Port

My main use for my Macs are

1.) Elgato TV/DVR / iTunes Server
2.) FCP X for editing TV recordings
3.) Encoding edited TV Recordngs for iTunes
4.) Photo's Storage.

Could then run headless with fitHeadless4K attached to the HDMI port.

Leave running 24/7

Would then simply connect from MB/MBpro to the Machine and use Screensharing to run the tasks needed.

The screen would be happy with the Integrated Graphics and then use an eGPU for the FCP X acceleration.

Likelihood that I expect to happen, no chance at all. Will likely cave and buy the iMac instead.

So I have had a few days to think of this and I am still not sure what to do.

I need a new computer. I really love Macs, but I am not going to spend a huge amount of money on a laptop when it is going to be connected to a monitor 100% of the time. I already do that with my MacBook Air, I spent way too much money on it and regret it.

I don't want to do a "Hackintosh" because (IMO) that goes against the whole idea of Macs being bullet proof right out of the box. I want my computer to work for me, I don't want to have to do work to get my computer to work properly. I gave up watercooling and overclocking and playing with computers years ago. Now I just need them to function.

So it seems like to only route is to go to a Windows machine. But I know I am going to hate it. Worrying about spyware and bloatware. All that crap. I want nothing to do with it.

This sucks.

Do you really need a "new" computer? A used 2012 i5 mini with 8GB will meet the needs of most at a reasonable price.

BTW - I broke down and bought a used 2014, sold my 2011, and feel I should be good for another couple of years.

Billions of people seem to do just fine. Pretty much only idiots have malware issues. Proper defense is necessary, and to use the brain a bit. I think you might be happily surprised. Things do change. Like, for instance, the current state of Mac computers :)

I don't consider paying the full retail price for a 5 year old computer to be a reasonable price. It's old and antiquated, and I am not going to pay the same price as I would have a half decade ago when it was released.

Lots of people have STD's too, it doesn't make me want to go get one.

Well, I gave in. My old Mini was past it and needed updating. So I went for the 13" MBNRP. Whilst I don't need a laptop as such I have to admit it will have its uses when not being used as a desktop. The spec might not be the greatest for many however it's a significant upgrade for me, so, for now, I am happy.

Get a refurb Mac Pro. The prices came down somewhat after the iMac Pro was announced. I'm sure it would last you a while, so that the total cost of ownership would be reasonable.

What is the MBNRP?

I pretty much said the same thing as you when I bought the MBA to use for my desktop, I figured it might come in handy. Years later it's never left the desk.

My Refurbished i5 MM(Late 2012) 2.5GHZ,16GB Ram,500GB HD which I purchased in the year 2013 has been a solid performer. However, been getting those dreaded "beach balls" once-in-a-while which probably indicates that my HD is on it last legs.

If it does "burn-out" I plan on replacing it with a external SSD which,IMO, will be more cost-effective than replacing it with an internal SSD.

I too bought a Refurbished MM(Late 2014), 2.8GHz,8GB Ram, 256SSD and I hope it serves me for another couple of years??

That is why I suggested used. There are some that do pay full retail for used but there are also some good deals.

There could still be a new Mini, wasn't there a rumour about a higher end model? Maybe that'll be announced with the new Pro. I do hope they do something with it, I think it's fantastic (or was fantastic, before October 2014 ;))

They do not do fine though. They are sick.

You may be happily surprised. Many others right here on this forum know what I am talking about. Win10 is NOT win 3.0.

Well, get yourself an iMac and forget about Mac mini if you don't like it
I had an 24" iMac and loved it. But when I was ready for a new computer the 27" iMac was very expensive compared to just purchasing a good 27" 2560x1440 monitor with a separate computer.

So now I have this great monitor which is plenty for me as far as resolution and clarity, which is why I hate to have to spend all the money on the iMac with the built in monitor.

MBNRP - Macbook Not Really Pro.

If it never leaves my desk I dont really care, still better than what I had and gives me options I never had.

Just sell your monitor or use it as a secondary display. You can always buy used iMac for much less

All jokes aside, I genuinely do believe a new Mac Mini is coming.

Back in 2016 when Apple was selling 2-year old Mac Minis, 3-year old Mac Pros, and 4.5-year old MacBook Pros as new (and at or near original prices) there was a lot of discussion and speculation about this, including a Bloomberg article about the topic. The problem essentially boils down to two issues (the blue text is linked to source):
  1. Internal disfunction and employee turnover: "Interviews with people familiar with Apple's inner workings reveal that the Mac is getting far less attention than it once did. They say the Mac team has lost clout with the famed industrial design group led by Jony Ive and the company's software team. They also describe a lack of clear direction from senior management, departures of key people working on Mac hardware and technical challenges that have delayed the roll-out of new computers."
  2. Corporate structure and priority: Apple's executive team down to the VP level doesn't have anyone responsible for Macs as a whole. So you don't have a Mac evangelist pumping for Macs as a priority. What you have instead are executives responsible for specific elements such as "Hardware Engineering", "Software Engineering", and "Design", but across all products simultaneously. So what happens is that they'd rather work on the new and sexy projects (Apple Watch, Apple Car, Virtual/Augmented Reality, iMac Pro, etc.) and then after that, the higher priority projects (iPhone, iPad, and MacBooks). The Mac Mini and Mac Pro are respectively the bottom two selling Mac models, so unsurprisingly they don't get the attention they, especially given lack of resources mentioned for problem #1.
To summarize, we are seeing delay due to internal dysfunction, corporate structure, and low priority, not because the model has been cancelled and has no future.

Selling my monitor won't get me much money, and I will then have to pay $2,000 for an iMac.

I would rather be able to just go pay $700-900 for a Mac Mini.

As for buying used, I don't want to buy used, and it would still cost too much money.

I really hope a new Mini is coming. My wife and I are both going through college so I don't have $4,000 to drop on a Mac laptop - nor do I really want to even if I had the $. I gave my wife my Mac mini 2014 (external SSD, 8gb ram) for her college work at the start of this year and found I just couldn't deal with an old 2011 windows machine we had. So I nabbed a Mid 2011 Mac mini from my boss (4gb of ram) - put an external SSD on it - and I'm very happy with it for now.

My boss just bought a $579 NUC - put a 1TB ssd and 32GB of ram into it (for less than $1200 total). Absolutely impressive - sure it is Windows 10 but... not bad for a tiny little computer that can play WoW and has tons of ram and hd space.

I really hope they come out with a new mini because I've used a 2014 Mac mini for the last few years as my primary machine (virtual boxed Windows for visual studio development) and played World of Warcraft on it (acceptable FPS on low settings).
