Yeah I'm really dumbfounded by how apple will handle the iPhone naming next year, do they just go 9 or skip to XI?

I cant wait to get the iPhone X, I'm upgrading via EE cause I certainly won't pay outright at that price lool but to be fair my phone is probably the most used device i own period. So I couldnt blame anyone who would pay that price for it.

People see no problems paying £800+ for a pair of trainers/shoes or a jacket/handbag they use once in a blue moon.

My amateurish guess is that X is just a one time naming event….for a statement product.

Next year's models will feature upgraded X features incorporated into the iPhone 9 and life will
go back to normal. I don't think I could handle the roman system for naming iPhones….god forbid one day we could see iPhone

Are we jumping from 8 to XI?
Apple has been slowly going to series names. iPhone SE and iPhone X. I think they will soon do the same for the regular iPhone line, but they may wait until they revamp the design some more. Otherwise we may get an 8S next year and the new name the year after that.

I think by autumn 2019 we'll have the iPhone SE, iPhone, iPhone Plus, iPhone X, and iPhone X Plus. Although I could see them eliminate the iPhone Plus and just keep the bigger, more expensive models, but perhaps with a price drop on the high end ($699 for iPhone, $899 for iPhone X, $999 for iPhone X Plus). I think by then the regular iPhone could have a similar design to the iPhone X with the full display—with many of the iPhone X features being differentiated by high-end features, such as even better cameras with wild new technology, true wireless charging, advanced waterproofing, higher resolution (they could keep the regular iPhone at 2X retina and maybe the cheaper LDC display), etc. They can't keep those thick bezels on the regular iPhone forever, and they can't keep numbering the iPhone indefinitely, especially as you pointed out they'll run into problems in the future. iPhone 14 just sounds stupid.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the X is discontinued next year, and the features are integrated into the next iPhone and iPhone Plus models. Jury's out on FaceID. May disappear if they get the under-screen TouchID to work. Some tech may sneak into the next SE.
FaceID will not disappear.
They didn't buy companies that specialised in this tech for it to disappear after a year, it's definitely not "jury out". Maybe as far as perception but as far as a feature on the iPhone it's here to stay.

FaceID was definitely always the long term goal for the iPhone.

Cant have 9 after 10…makes no sense.

I predict the series will go like so.

iPhone X, X-1, X-2, X-3 and so on.

I really don't see them abandoning FaceID after talking about how much more secure and convenient it is. They might as well bring back the headphone jack too. Whether their on the right track or not, Apple doesn't backtrack.
You must be new here. Firewire? Thunderbolt? Both touted as the best thing ever. See them around?

Of course not. That's the nature of technology, for the greatest thing ever to become yesterday's news. But I guess I wasn't clear. I mean that they would never abandon it to bring back the very thing that it replaced!

Iphone and iphone + (based on the current X design)
Iphone classic (based on the 6 7 8) with home button
Iphone SE

Or...

Iphone 9 and 9+ (bezelless based on the X)
Iphone 8 and 8+ (same as today with a price drop)
Iphone SE

I think the X in terms of name is a one off. My bet however is dropping the numbers. There's already a precedent with the iPad pro 12.9. It's been updated once but still carries the same name but with a size.
[doublepost=1505631565][/doublepost]Actually. Could also drop the iPhone Se name and go with iphone classic in three sizes small medium large and then just iphone and iphone plus for the new body x style phones.

In 2 years maybe 3, I see only 3 phones in thelineup . Drop the bezel 4.7 and 5.5 and change the SE to go edge to edge. Small body larger screen.

Next year we'll see the iPhone X for what it really is, an excuse for Apple to hike prices.

We won't see a 8s or 9. We'll see something that builds on the X. Maybe Xs or XI who knows but there is no way Apple will give up that extra $300 margin if it's what people go for this year.

The line up will be:

iPhone SE
iPhone 7

iPhone X discounted
iPhone X v2

Apple is providing choice across a wide range of price points. It’s not confusing- pick the most expensive iphone you can afford. Or the amount of money which you feel is appropriate to spend on a phone.

I wish they offered iPad at more price ranges, but the volume doesn’t support it.

A lot of iPhone user seem to think the iPhone lineup is to staggered. Ultimately, Apple offers more colors and plenty of iPhone choices for all users of like, with different price points and considerable features. Adding more options is a good thing and applies to a larger demographic.

They could do all sorts of things, introduce a 9 to bump down the 8 and 7 a place in the lineup, refresh the 7 and 8 with a 7s and 8s, i don't think they'll remove the numbering just yet due to the number of models on offer, it could get extremely confusing if they try all the 'the new iphone' or 'the iPhone with oled display' shenanigans!

I don't see a 7s. That's all ready been bumped down. Maybe an 8s or 9. And then simply iphone X and iphone X plus with rhe new design and spec upgrades. But see I can't see the same body being recycled for another cycle. Who knows.

I was thinking they might refresh both models as realistically a lot of people will probably want to buy at the 7 price point... the '7s' would more or less just be a chip bump to an a11, and perhaps an upgraded camera or something...

But as I noted there's so many ways they can go from here it's difficult to say until we get some sort of rumours to go on

Makes sense but then wouldn't the current 8 be bumped down the line effectively becoming the 7s?

I don't think there'll be an iPhone 9. Apple jumped to 10 in order to compete with Samsung. Sure, they're 2 different devices but you have to admit that the number 10 sounds more appealing than 8. It's all marketing. I imagine next gen to be called X1 and so on...

Whether their on the right track or not, Apple doesn't backtrack.
I agree they wouldn't backtrack on the no headphone jack (especially since Android OEMs are and have been doing the same thing even before Apple did).

As for backtracking, Apple (Steve Jobs) did backtrack. Remember the no-button iPod shuffle 3rd gen? That's Steve Jobs' ultimate device. But he backtracked due to the backlash and introduced a 4th gen shuffle with the buttons back.
I'm sure Apple is still actively figuring out how to do TouchID under the screen. If people accept FaceID, then they're fine. If people didn't like FaceID, then they can do the same thing as 4th gen shuffle, claiming that FaceID is a success, but some people prefer the more discrete TouchID, so Boom, both features are built in into the best iPhone they've ever made.

:D
