I am watching the keynote speech now, and maybe they haven't revealed it all yet, but I was expecting an overhaul and new design for iOS 11.

The same overall theme look has been around since iOS 7, and needs some major changes and updating.

I want to see;

- New icons, and design shape. Or better yet finally allow icon packs for gods sake, like something the Jailbreak community does.
- Or Live Tiles like Windows Phone has.
- Allow drag and drop of files form a PC to the iPhone.
- Fix the Phone app, don't have take up the whole screen when a call comes in, have it just be a Heads up notification while you are in app already.
- Allow Widgets to be put on the home screen now, not just the far left screen only.
- Allow the user to set default apps. Maybe I want to use Swyft keyboard 100% all the time. Give me the option to do so.

I agree with a lot here too;

Doesn't seem like a redesign was really expected.

Doesn't seem like a redesign was really expected.

There was a ton of chatter on the big websites, saying iOS 11 expected to get a refreshed new UI.

But what they showed is a major disappointment. Same old tired looks since iOS 7, still ZERO customization. Unbelievable, you can't even drag and place an app icon anywhere you'd like on the home screen. WTF, it's 2017, not 2008 anymore. You can't drag and drop a PDF file or something from the PC to a plugged in iPhone, I mean come on. Setting of default apps PLEASE.

Really sucks the Jailbreak scene is pretty much dead, at least with JB you can do a lot of these things that should be stock.

Interestingly enough I can't say I've seen much about that. Perhaps a ton of typical chatter of hopes for a redesign or this or that, as is basically the case with pretty much any update almost any year, but doesn't really seem like there was much beyond that to actually indicate something more than just the usual/typical hopes.

I agree 110% with this article, on what we'd like to see in iOS 11;
https://www.macrumors.com/2017/05/25/macrumors-forums-ios-11-wishlist/

None of that ended up being a reality :(

And still no basic theme engine, like Samsung does, people like to have different options to make their phone more unique to their style, let me change the color of the back ground or the icons. I'm not wanting Apple to copy Android, but who wouldn't want the option of some basic themes ? If you don't want to use them, that's cool, then don't, but I bet a few people would like that option.

What about Dark mode ?

Wow WTF Apple ?

Yup ios 11 looks bad.

Im hoping when iPhone 8 releases, we will know more features. Im also hoping iPhone 8 is redesigned.

Why did I even get my hopes up that Apple would finally make the much needed overhaul and update happen. They never do.

And no stable JB for the iPhone 7 line either :( If the Jailbreak scene was alive and well, I'd be happy still with my 7 Plus. But JB is dead.

Oh well, I sold my 7 Plus and went back to stock Android with Nexus 6P. But was hoping the big iOS 11 refresh was going to happen. Oh well...bring on the Pixel XL 2 now.

Yes, still not much freedom of choice from Apple.
I guess if we want freedom and options we have to go get it.
But Jailbreaking is becoming harder to come by and more unstable/cumbersome than previous years.

If Apple took a pass on iOS 11 then that indicates to me they will take a pass on a physical redesign of the phone itself later this year.

Sadly, it's looking more and more like my 6s+ will be my last iPhone for a while.

Funny thing is, with a JB the iPhone is so much better, Split screen, drag and drop files, dark mode, themes, heads up notification for the Phone, and a laundry list of nice features that make the iPhone so much better. But unfortunately the JB is dead. And hoping for Apple to finally incorporate all these JB is a wasted dream, never happening.

I think Apple's ideas of what constitutes change/improvement with iOS has more to do with incremental adjustments rather than the kinds of things we users would actually like to see or would use.

That said, there exists a large amount of users here in the actual iPhone forums who see function over form as positive and for them iOS 11 will be an improvement.

Just so strange, that supposedly there's this radical new iPhone 8 coming in a few months, edge to edge screen, very futuristic all new design, but it will still be running an OS that looks like iOS 7 from years ago, with the ugly and dated app icons, and just an overall old looking OS. It will look funny running on this all new hardware with old looking software, styled from 2013.

The thing is, I am not an iPhone hater, I really enjoyed my iPhone 7 Plus, and think with a JB it's the best smartphone out there. But Apple should just incorporate the top ten most used JB tweaks and make those part of stock iOS 11.

I think they passed on the redesign because they know that the redesigned iPhone 8 will drive sales....
Just a thought

iOS generally has features reserved for the newest hardware, but obviously those aren't revealed nor in the beta version of the software until the hardware is unveiled. Siri (4S), force touch (6S), larger displays (6) come to mind.

I don't expect a major overhaul of iOS (wasn't aware there was a lot of speculation behind that?), but surely some UI/feature tweaks will be revealed with the new iPhone this Fall.

The one revision I thought iOS 10 desperately needed overhauling for iOS 11, was the Notification system, and just the way it works in general. I heard that over and over a lot this year, people we're not huge fans of iOS 10's notification system, and that it could and should be improved / revised.

Nothing about that today...crickets

iOS 10's notification system was changed. What were you wanting that hasn't been implemented yet?

I still find it very odd, that this brand new Star Trek looking super cool futuristic iPhone 8 will come out this Fall, but turn it on, and it will be "pew pew pew" totally dated looking OS from 2013, and same old app icons form years ago.

It would be like buying a brand new 2018 C7 Corvette Z06, and then open the doors and has the interior from C4 from the 80's.

If any time iOS needed an overhaul, it's now with the iPhone 8.

I read somewhere that the CC got consolidated buttons and that it got fugly. There's that I guess.

I see, that would be at least 1 useful thing. Did they add any more options in CC or just made it look different?
I guess the days where we used to get tons of improvements and cool new features with a major iOS update are pretty much over.
This seems like pretty much nothing a year later and a new major iOS update.

IDK. I guess all your appropriate buttons are supposed to be on one pane, not scattered amongst the others. I was mainly skimming the article to see what might jump out at me so I didn't read in detail.

But yeah. I think Apple is focused on internal improvements, instead of overt external stuff. Which is sad, because outside of the design of the phone, iOS is pretty much why I chose iPhone.
