Because when all I want to do is surf the web and answer email on the toilet or on my couch, my damned MacPro and Cinema Display cut of circulation to my legs and leave bruises on my thighs.

I was going to buy a Macbook Air for coffee table surfing. SJ just saved me a thousand bucks.

At least the Air is a COMPUTER. The iPad is a large Touch. Hardly comparable. What do they share in common? ANSWER: the Apple logo.

The eMac that my two teenage boys are sharing for schoolwork is aging, and I was getting ready to buy them an new iMac, maybe two. They're already fighting over time on the single mac.

So... the iPad will do EVERYTHING they need for school and casual use. The iWork port was the clincher there. Even "Brush" can be used by the artistic kid to make his drawings, and he's excited about that.

So, now I can get them each one of their own and at worst I'm out the same money, at best it'll save me $1000.

I'll probably just get a mega big drive on the macbook I'm about to get for myself, and they can sync to own accounts on there, but won't need to use the main computer very much.

For those whining about it, you have to realize that no product is ever targeted at EVERYONE, and you're just not in the targeted demographic, so move along.

If I was only buying the Air for web surfing, whys should I care that it can do so much more? This is the point of the iPad: to cater to people like me who want to surf the web on the couch, and leave more involved tasks to be done on my Mac.

Not everything has to be able to do everything.

It truly seems that the general opinions are rather negative - be it on engadget, digg or even here.

The worst thing is however when ppl begin to hate on ppl who actually find the iPad quite neat. That's extremely poor taste.

This device has turned out exactly how I expected it to be. Sleek and nothing revolutionary. It will sell just like the Air, in other words quite respectably.

For perspective, please tell me how you rate the sales of the Apple TV.

the thing is, is that the people who have used the device generally have positive comments. It's those who haven't that are eviscerating this device.

It will do quite well.

I bought a Mac mini as my main machine and media centre, it works perfectly as both. My iPhone is my mobile device and it works great. However there is times (actually most of the time) that I want a bigger screen on my iPhone. I would like to edit documents in Pages at school, surf the web on the couch with a screen bigger than 3.5". The MB/MBP cost too much to be that middle device. I did not buy a notebook to begin with because I wanted my main machine to also double as a media centre. The iPad hits thatsweet spot between those devices with right price. I just want multitasking.

How cool would be to able to use the iPad as a screen for the mini?

I meant you aren't going to get multitasking! (oh my, reading comprehension failure, even after I quoted the salient part of your post...)

How did you come to this conclusion? Also consider that I was not the person you were responding to. But thanks for the insult, I will store it in my idiot bag when I need a chuckle!

Can´t do anything serious that MacBook Pro with full OS X can.

Exactly, I try to tell the same thing to my friends, only with cars. My friend wants to buy a Nissan 370z, as he thinks it would be fun to drive around. He doesn't seem to realize that he could do so much more with a Lamborghini though... He's tried telling me that they're too expensive, but come on, everyone has the money for them. I wish everyone would share the same opinions with me, as I obviously know what's best for them.

Well not everyone has an MB. All I have is a Mac mini. But I've been needing a portable device that is more than an iPhone for a long time now. The iPad will be perfect for me. I just have no wish to spend $1000 for an MB or more for MBP. I have been amazed at all the negative postings. It looks to me like the iPad is a great device at a great price. I think there are many, many people out there who have been thinking about getting a netbook but will now look at the iPad. I plan on ordering one just as soon as it is available.

Agreed
I have no notebook comp, just my iMac and an iPhone. For me this fits in well between the two.

Ill buy one just so I don't have to pull out my MBP to watch a movie on cross country or International flights....my iphone screen is too small for this...my 17 in MBP is too big, especially when someone is sitting in front of me with their seat reclined....at $500 smacks, I don't need all of the other features that my iPhone and MBP have. I see this a great entertainment device for traveling.

I want one to replace my Kindle. It will cost slightly 2x more, but it will do about 140,000 things that the Kindle can't.

RE: multi-tasking, I think it will get it when the iPhone does. The iPad is running OS 3.2, not 4.0

The webcam makes no ergonomic sense to me. A cam like the iPhone's (for snapping pics or videos), perhaps. But nobody's going to hold the freaking iPad up level with their face for 15 minutes to video chat. And laying the pad in any other position isn't going to give you a workable angle for video chat.

Your thought about HD makes me think that you'd find "no sense" in watching a 1080p show on a 720p TV set.

Then allow me to simplify the reasons why people are rightfully bashing it..

- No multi-tasking. Yes, the iPhone didn't have it either, but that's still forgiveable as the iPhone only has a 3.5" screen (though even Palm somehow managed it on a smaller screen..), but on a 10" screen? Having to quite Pages each time to use Safari or any other app is just stupid....

- No Flash. Sure, Flash is an annoyance on many websites, but it is essential on many others. Like many have said, even the NYT website that Jobs demoed had crippled flash on it.. A simple flash "on/off" slider wouldn't kill them, rather than them deciding that one wouldn't want it...

- No Webcam. This isn't a huge deal, but its a bit of a strange omission as having one would make absolute sense in every possible way.. But the fact that they still won't make an iChat iPhone app sort of speaks for the omission of this feature really....

- No Full OS X. These apps could easily have been apps made for full-on OS X a la FrontRow or Plex.. The processor should be more than capable of handling it (it has similar specs to the nVidia Tegra 2 platform) and really Apple is restricting the potential of this new processor by simply releasing a tweaked iPhone OS. They were working on this for years and all they came up with was a skinned iPhone OS? Please...

- HD on a non-HD screen. Touting Youtube HD or HD H264 video playback as a feature on a screen with a non-HD resolution makes no sense.

- eBooks. While its great they are including an eBook store, you cannot honestly compare an IPS screen to an E-ink screen for a better reading experience. It'll be good, but Jobs seems to think he has revolutionised it somehow......

How did you come to this conclusion?

I'm not Dave, but I came to the same conclusion he did after reading multiple hands-on reviews that said the iPad doesn't have multitasking. Of course, multitasking could be added in the future with an OS upgrade, but for now, I'll accept the words of people who's played with the device that there's no multitasking.

And personally, even though multitasking would be nice, I plan to buy an iPad and live without it. I lived without multitasking on my ipod touch before it was jailbroken, and while I love the additional functionality provided by multitasking, not having it isn't a deal-breaker for me.

Think about the medical field - if im a dr. and have an office thats needs to make the mandatory e-switch in 2011, wouldnt it be nice to get to talk to mr. aristobrat's primary care dr face to face on my iPad? i could see xrays and share the screen with another dr to discuss it...

If you have an iPhone, how does the iPad cover more bases in a cost effective manner than a kindle?

I don't think anyone is against it having multitasking, but the way I will use this device, the lack of it isn't a show-stopper.

Does anyone really think that multi-tasking won't be coming in a future OS update?

I posted this in a different thread:

The iPad will be shipping in 60 days. That's in March. 3.0 was displayed in March. I believe we'll have a conference in March, showcasing 4.0 for both the iPhone and iPad, with multitasking, and some other new features. Then the iPad can release with those features.

That sounds cool, but I just don't see a Dr. standing there, using both hands to hold the iPad up at his face and keeping the damn thing steady for a 10 minute consultation.

The screen and xray sharing don't require a camera.

I have an iPhone. I have the Kindle app on my iPhone, giving me access to all of my Kindle books. The screen is entirely too small for my liking. Both for the Kindle, for watching TV shows, and for surfing the web.

I appreciate the utilitarianism of my iPhone in situations like the car, standing in line at the grocery store, stuck in a boring meeting, etc. Random places I have to be, where I'm not going to be toting anything other than my wallet, keys, and phone.

When I'm at home or traveling, I want something bigger than the iPhone screen.
