Where ever my life takes me...
I've been reading the iPad forums with interest - so many people heavily against and so many for.

Personally, I, like many, am incredibly disappointed. I desperately wanted a new toy to get my teeth into, but with my iPhone in my pocket and my MBP in my bag, I just don't see the point of the iPad.

So why are you going to buy one? I want to be convinced and would love to hear other people's reasons.

I'll buy a iPad because I have no reason to.

The iPad will be shipping in 60 days. That's in March. 3.0 was displayed in March. I believe we'll have a conference in March, showcasing 4.0 for both the iPhone and iPad, with multitasking, and some other new features. Then the iPad can release with those features.

That is a very reasonable prediction, and it would be very nice if it came true. But at this point, I don't care. Ever since iPhone OS 2 and the app store came out, I've wanted my iPod touch to have a larger screen -- so many great apps, so tiny and cramped screen! I've heard people saying the iPad is just a bigger iPhone/iPod touch, and I say YES, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WANT! Now, why, oh why, do I have to wait two more months to get one? I wanted this last year!!!!

Why?

I can´t think any reason why I would buy it. I already have an iPhone 3GS which offers so much more than the iPad.

To me the iPad is perfect. As a college student I almost never need the full functionality of a computer. I use my iPod for web browsing, facebook, games, and all the random things that the million apps I have do. I use my macbook when I get tired of squinting at the small screen of my iPod, when I need to use a flash based website, and when I have large amounts of writing to do. In fact, I often find myself wishing that my macbook had the ability to run the apps that I have on my iPod because the apps are more efficient than what are available on my macbook. I am going to be very happy to leave my macbook permanently on my desk and make the iPad my solution for portable computing!

The only thing that REALLY concerns me about the iPad is its lack of multitasking. However, I think that when the iPhone OS 4.0 is released (soon I hope!) this issue will be resolved. With multitasking an iPad is the perfect bridge between iPod and Computer IMHO. Also, I need be able to print from the iPad... No native printing... no iPad. But I am confident that this is included with the iPad.

GAAAAH WHY NO CAMERA!!!!!! (I am trying to just forget this oversight)... I don't really need one... I really don't need a camera... it's not THAT big of a deal because I don't REALLY need a camera... I REEEEEAAAAAALLLLY NEEED a camera!!! WHY APPLE!?!?! WHY!?!!!?

It does? Like what?

1. Portability. iPhone fits in my pocket and it goes with me everywhere I go. I wouldn´t carry this iPad anywhere and in my home I can surf the web with my iMac.

2. A phone / SMS / MMS

3. Camera

4. Video camera

5. Hmm did the iPad have a GPS?

This is subjective. I personally carry my bag everything, which includes my Air. In my home, my Mac Pro is in my office, so my Air is usually nearby for a quick lookup. The iPad will replace my Air quite well.

2. A phone / SMS / MMS

I would expect a phone to have these functions. The iPad is not a phone. Although, jail-breaking could correct this, or VoIP apps (which are now being allowed by AT&T).

3. Camera

4. Video camera

The iPhone doesn't do these well. I have better devices for these functions.

5. Hmm did the iPad have a GPS?

If you were paying attention, you would know that it does.

Well I´m sorry for you. If you would get an iPhone 3GS you wouldn´t have to carry a damn bag with you! :D

"iPad is not a phone", no sh.. poop Sherlock! It is just an larger iPod Touch, which will be painful to carry around. Was this your lame defense? I´m talking about the advances of the iPhone and you just say "it´s not a phone". Weak!

The iPhone takes a pretty good video and pictures for a mobile phone. ;) But guess what, the iPad doesn´t do even that! HAHAHA!!!

I was with you until the iMac part. I can't use a iMac when I'm crashed out on the couch, laying back in bed, hanging out in the back yard, or on a 16-hour flight to Hong Kong. I have been using an iPhone, but if I had an option of a bigger screen (like the iPad), I'd jump on it.

I'd use an iPhone for "on the go" stuff, where it's always with me, the iPad for casual use around the couch (couch/bed/backyard) and while traveling, and if I had a need for any serious computing, an iMac.

For what I'd use it for, the iPhone can't do it any better on that tiny screen, and the iMac would be complete overkill.

Yes, the iPhone is more portable, but I'm happy to give up a little portability for a bigger screen. And I don't need/want a phone or camera, so it's not pertinent to me that the iPad does neither. You say "But it has a phone and camera," and I say "So what?" :D

Actually. I had a 3G and a 3Gs. Right now I am using an HTC Hero. None of these devices satisfy my needs when doing research that takes more than a few seconds. The screens are too small and restrictive. Do you really think I want to go to Coffee Shop and browse the web on a 3.2" screen? If that is what you want, knock yourself out.

The iPhone is a phone. The iPad is not. This isn't a defense, since it is obvious. Why pick out points about the iPhone that are unique to the iPhone? I will always have my phone, so Phone/SMS/MMS will always be available to me. However, I want something to replace my laptop, and the iPad does this (at least I think it will).

The iPhone doesn't take video or photos I would share with anyone. But hey, neither does my Air. I guess I should just replace my Air with an iPhone as well.

The iPad doesn't work for you. Great. These are subjective matters, all you have to say is: This doesn't work for me. And you only need to say it once.

If this product is only for browsing the web while your on the couch or toilet or whatever (which it very much seems like to be), you people must be out of your freaking minds!!!

Remember though, iPhone can do ALL that perfectly well and MORE!!! ;)

On a horribly small screen. Just what I always wanted. You can stop shoving the iPhone down people's throat. I have an iPhone (well close enough, an HTC Hero), but I am not using it to browse the web right now. I am using a laptop. It is more comfortable and offers a better experience. If I can replace my notebook for these tasks with a smaller and lighter device, I do not see what the problem is.

When you´ll pull out you precious "iPod Touch Large" in a coffee shop, I will laugh at your face! :D

Seriously people, you are insane!

Why don´t you get a 13" MacBook Pro instead of this toy. 100x more value for your money!

Is there an echo in here? ;)

Wait until you get to be 40 or 50, and maybe you'll be squinting at an iPhone (or whatever latest ultra-portable device they'll have then) and wishing for a bigger screen.

The screen is just fine. Really good actually. I have no problems with it browsing the web. At least I don´t have to carry a seperate device in a bag + a phone in the pocket. Because that´s just stupid.

I'm going to buy it and here's why.

I'm currently using a laptop (windows), and an iPhone. My laptops battery life isn't great, and it's not touch screen, it's heavy, and it gets hot.

My iPhone is great because I have YouTube, basically a full functional web browser, multitouch, etc... but the screen is too small to make it your casual couch browser.

I want something that I can sit on the couch with, or lay in bed with, that has a nice clear screen, multitouch, good battery life, and a ton of useful apps, something that I can browse macrumors, engadget, and other blogs, etc.. and here's the answer. (or rather... here's the answer for me.)

People that aren't impressed with the apps that were shown apparently don't realize that the SDK was just released yesterday. Once developers get their hands on the raw power that this little device is capable of, I believe you'll be seeing FAR MORE IMPRESSIVE apps created than those that have lived on the iPhone or iPod touch.

I'm excited... I guess not as much as I COULD have been. But I think, in its first iteration, that the iPad is a solid buy for me. (I'm just going to get the 16gb NON 3g.)

I don't see a need to pay extra for the 3g model, because I don't see it leaving my house very often. And if it does leave my house, I'm rarely away from a Wi-Fi connection. If I need to access apps/web/youtube/etc on the go, well... I have my iPhone that I have been getting by just fine with.

At a $499 entry point, how could you go wrong? I was going to spend that on a ***** windows netbook, and now I have a sexy iPhone on 'roids that looks much more elegant, and it's a familiar interface to me because of my iPhone.

I'm excited for the iPad, and maybe even more excited for next gen iPhone (with the combo of OS 4.0)

Grow up. I have a: Macbook Air, a Kindle, an iPhone (and HTC Hero) and a Mac Pro with a 30" and two 20 inchers in portrait. I can replace two of these devices with one, and i plan on doing it.

Do you want to tell me how to spend my money?

What is your problem? I suppose i will just sell everything and use my iPhone for everything. Give me a break.

I want one to replace my Kindle. It will cost slightly 2x more, but it will do about 140,000 things that the Kindle can't.

RE: multi-tasking, I think it will get it when the iPhone does. The iPad is running OS 3.2, not 4.0

The webcam makes no ergonomic sense to me. A cam like the iPhone's (for snapping pics or videos), perhaps. But nobody's going to hold the freaking iPad up level with their face for 15 minutes to video chat. And laying the pad in any other position isn't going to give you a workable angle for video chat.

Your thought about HD makes me think that you'd find "no sense" in watching a 1080p show on a 720p TV set.

Actually the dock is more than capable of acting as a stand for video conferencing.. Somebody gave the example of a doctor, but other examples could include the office, hell even on the couch! Its just lazy to omit it, and how much do you want to bet that Apple are going to tout as an amazing new feature in the next iteration like they did with copy and paste??

1080p on a 720p set does also make little sense... At least though, a 1080p video would be downscaled to a 720p HD resolution, there is absolutely no way you can call a video HD on a non-HD display is all i'm saying, as the video is now 1024x768 and NOT 1280x720...

I'm sure the chances of multi-tasking being on the next iteration of the OS is quite probable, but when they changed so much in the OS in 3.2 for the iPad, why the omission....?

I was really hoping i'd be able to take notes on the Keynote slides - perfect in a lecture environment... But it looks like it doesn't even save your notes! Come on Apple!! What's with all the restrictions!!

The point is, you're paying between 500 and 820 for this device... I'm not sure if that's worth it for someone who just likes to browse the web on their couch..... Apple is a great company, but sometimes you have to look at reality, people shouldn't always blindly fall in love with their every product... I mean, just look at the Apple TV.........

Well, the iPad fullfills almost all my expectations and I surely will buy one for:

- surfing on a nice large display on the couch without having to put a heavy notebook on my lap

- watching movies on public transport, on the airport, in the hotel and so on, on a nice large screen. I did it until now with my iphone but I surely will appreciate the larger screen.

- using it in business to take documents to meetings, making small notes through the meeting, reading mails and showing presentations with it.

- taking it to friends to show them my photos

It does all that and more - I'm not a reporter so I don't have to type hundreds of pages. The iPad will do just fine for what I have to do mobile. So instead of buying a MacBook Pro I'm planning now to buy an iPad and an iMac.

I was planning to replace both my MacBook and iPod Touch this summer, but now, for me at least, Apple have released the happy medium.
