The one of RuneScape is such a head scratcher... Were you playing the new one or the old one?

You mention that GTAV runs at about 25-30 fps on medium settings. Can you confirm? That one is pretty demanding, both CPU and GPU wise.

Yes, I was getting around 18-25 when it first launched, then the processor smoothed and I saw a average of 25-30fps. Changing it to low didn't help much more and only added another 3-4 fps. Only if I shot rockets or made a bunch of explosions did the FPS drop to like 8-10 fps area.

Def a worthwhile upgrade. Im seeing a majority of my games actually playable now, which was my main beef with the 2015 version. Not that I'm using this as a gaming machine, I have a system with sli 980tis for that. I did however want to be able to play some games on low for trips.

I was going to wait until the rMBP refresh, but didn't want to set myself up for disappointment, and my iPad pro wasn't cutting it as my only mobile device. And the surface pro 4 and surface book had their fair share of glitches and low battery life.

The throttling is different on this machine, id say it starts slow the first minute but then evens very nicely and cools while running long term.

I have a high end gaming rig like you, for me it would be nice to be able to fire up something like Civ 5 because I often go round to my buddies and play some Civ while we drink and I don't like moving my gaming rig as its a pain and liquid cooled. Hence why I'm curious to see if this little laptop might just be enough.

Debating whether to go for the M3 or M5.

Gaming wise, yes. Actually its pretty significant in Photoshop and InDesign from what I'm seeing as well. If it were me, id probably either see if I can exchange or resell it and buy the 2016.

As you own both the 2015 and 2016 rMB, can I ask how much better is the performance percentage wise? As in how many more fps are you getting compared to the 2015 rMB on the same game/settings?

And is your rMB 2015 and 2016 the 1.2/m5 model?

Thanks

Could you please post some benchmarks for the Call of Duty series? On my 2015, I could play at 720p and high settings and get on average 35 fps. However, it would often dip down to 15 fps during heavy fights then go back to 45 fps. My point is that fps is very unstable on my 2015 MacBook. So, gameplay is stuttering a lot. What about the 2016 model? Is frame rate quite stable?

Just picked up my new 2016 MacBook m5. I'm going to install Bootcamp tonight then some Steam and Origin games. I've got pretty much, from the Call of Duty, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed series, GTA IV and V, etc. Will report back in a day or two with some preliminary results...

Friend of mine got a W10 key on eBay for around £20 and I picked up Office 2016 for about £17. But no idea what that site is like. Maybe pay with PayPal or a credit card to be safe?

The New one I guess. I doubt the old one will even stress it if the new one runs at 25fps.

Would you pretty please test the old one as well? I'm considering getting this Macbook and I want to play the old Runescape on it as well.

I guess it's time to report back. Alright, overall, I'm disappointed in the 2016 model (in comparison to the 2015 one). Basically, here are the things. For the first few minutes, the new Macbook perform about 50 % to 100 % better than the 2015 model. However, after 10 minutes (or less) or play, things get coarse. I'm getting about 10 % more on the 2016 model but that's it. Frame rates are a little bit better on the 2016 Macbook than the 2015 one. I suspect that the thermal throttling kicks in so there's minimal difference in GPU performance.

Skyrim is a nice exception though. Since the game is not very demanding in terms of action/cpu, it maintains its 30 fps on high. But overall, this is not the case. It seems like the thermal envelope on the 2016 is the same as on the 2015 one.

I guess it's healthy to hear some somber reports as well so we don't start hoping for miracles :p
