For the files I handle the extra 0.4 GHZ and the 200MHZ faster graphics chip are worth it to me. I think its like a $150 difference. Usually if I'm spending that much another $150-200 is worth it to me to know I have the best.
I get that but doesnt the macbook throttle down a bit during gaming making the extra 0.4 GHZ unused?

High. And they are the same. They both use the same engine.

Wow, that's a big improvement over my 2015 base model then! I play Left 4 Dead 1 (Windows/Bootcamp) and even on 1280*800 and medium settings I get around 40 FPS with quite a bit of stuttering with lots of zombies.

I may be wrong but I have a feeling the m7 is just a better binned m5.

For games it may not be the ghz turbo boost but the increased ghz of the m7 HD 515@1.0GHZ vs m5 515@800mhz, and the efficiency to heat performance may fair better in the m7 favor.

If it is at all like the skylake SP4 i5 vs i7 in the U processor line, though very similar clock speed, the i7 cooled faster, processed faster and used less power for the same processes - http://www.notebookcheck.net/Face-O...ore-i5-vs-Surface-Pro-4-Core-m3.156031.0.html

I still think it's worth $200 overall, and wouldn't base my decision of the m7 purely on gaming but the general use of the machine I.E. Work.

I was under the impression from looking on Intel Ark and Wikipedia that there was only a 50MHz difference between the m5 and m7?
Edit: sorry 100MHz difference?

Actually, it's a 50 MHz difference. Also, it seems like the m7 is more prone to throttling under heavy load over time.

To my eyes there is a 100 MHz clock difference between the 515 in the m5 and m7.
1000 MHz > 900 MHz
-And a 150 MHz difference between the m3 and m7.

[doublepost=1463076299][/doublepost]Also, this is quite interesting:
https://gameplay.intel.com/m/Hardwa... m7-6Y75 Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz)

Don't know what sort of frame rate these recommended settings are supposed to bestow.
Might be settings required for 60 fps?
-or just settings for 30 fps, don't know.

Its probably for auto-config settings. though theres always room for tweaking. There are also FPS increasers to dedicate more processing power to games - http://store.steampowered.com/app/384300/

Although I haven't tested them yet.

Is there anything testing on the throttling. From my real world experience, my 2015 m5 seems to throttle over time vs my 2016 m7. My m7 seems to only throttle at launch, then actually stays quite cool and level after 1-3 mins depending how intensive the game is.

I again don't have a 2016 m5 to test it against.

Is "high power mode" only available in boot camp? I'm playing a bit Starcraft 2 on my machine and would love just a tad extra beef (2015 512gb machine)

I believe so, not sure if you can change CPU usage in Mac OSX. Also Direct X 12 is a bit more supported than Open GL in games and usually yields better FPS.

So it would benifit my Starcraft 2 performance to run bootcamp? It's the 2015 model, but still - a bit of improvement would be nice

Bootcamp? Definitely. However, the real issue is the bad sustained performance of the GPU. Thermal envelope on the 2016 model is marginally better than the 2015 one. I did a test and put my Macbook on an icepack. Average framerates almost doubled, which indicates that the processor itself throttles due to heat and "suffocate" basically.

Has anyone tried Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster from Steam? It's the only game I play. I currently use Bootcamp and Windows 10, but I get occasional stutter on the 750m so I assume it would be unplayable on an rMB.

I play it at 1080p on an external monitor with my laptop's display disabled.

You really never know unlesss it's tested. Poorly optimize games , such as ark, can run the same on an integrated GPU as a 750ti graphics card. It really depends on how the game has been optimized.

Has anyone tried Alien Isolation on the Mac side? I tried it on my 2016 M7 and it crashes constantly even at the lowest settings. Will this game not work on this MacBook before I delete it off?

I really suggest not running anything mac side with games unless its WoW or Hearthstone, even then, its like a 20-25FPS difference on windows side with DX12/DX10

You are right... I was just trying it out to see if it worked. I have more space allocated to OSX so I thought why not try it out. Have you updated to Anniversary edition yet? If so, can you tell me if your HDMI audio out works correctly?

I haven't upgraded to anniversary yet. Been testing macOS seirra more recently due to the developer seeding.
