Breaking a product intentionally is insurance fraud and could result in jail time. I'm not saying not to do it. I'm just pointing it out.

Those are Geek Squad warranties and what not.. the only one that is worth wile is the $129 ADH BTP plan, which covers all hardware (I'd go through Apple within my one year anyways) and one year of accidental damage coverage, which covers anything except full water submersion. So, I might buy my iPad from my work and get that accidental plan (I'd get it for like $70-80 or so), and 'break' my iPad right before my one year is up and end up getting a second generation iPad for 'free.'
Or they will sell the first gen for -$100 (just like with the iPhone. iPhone 3G = $99 iPhone 3Gs = $199).

The only advantage you would have, is that you will get a new iPad for free without scratches and a good new battery.

Than you sell that iPad, and buy the 2nd. gen.

How will they know. You might 'accidently' let it fall out of your hands. They can't say you did that on purpose.

And uh, how long do you have warranty in the USA? I never buy extra warranty or stuff over here in NL. Over here you have a special right when you buy products. We can expect that products like an iPhone, or in this case an iPad, should do fine for at least 2 years. So if your iPad suddenly doesn't work anymore in the second year, and Apple refuses to replace it than you can invoke on this special right.

this scam has been tried before with PDA's. After this trick got around I thought Best Buy said they will not replace broken screen items.
Not to say you couldn't do it some other way.

Seeing as though there is no way to prove whether a customer has intentionally broken a product is impossible to prove, and the 3rd party reseller must fulfill the warranty purchased.

@ThatsMeRight- The iPhone is the only Apple device in which the previous generation is still stocked at Best Buy. With iPods, within two months of release the older generation is completely phased out and not available in store.

@WLS- That's not true, broken screens are still covered under the ADH plans. It covers anything but full water submersion.

Just because you won't get caught doesn't mean it's right to do it. This is the exact mindset that has led to rampant software and media piracy. If you knew you wouldn't get caught, would you steal a car? A better analogy would be, would you intentionally total your old car for the insurance money?

this is reaching.

not right to do it? is it right to buy an iPad when thousands of your own kind are needing money for transplants around the world and money for medical bills that you could donate your 499+/599+/699+ to?

*see how I was reaching there at the same time?*

And jedolley, the {...} store in {...}, TX.

Hey, thanks for being open and upfront with us here, but don't get yourself in trouble! Photographing management docs, making it known that you're planning on intentionally breaking equipment for a free replacement... I know a lot of corporations are large enough not to care, but usually people don't flaunt it either. Maybe you should consider editing this post?

How was I reaching? It's "not right" because it is ILLEGAL and is considered insurance fraud, the SAME as if you intentionally total your car. Just because it's impossible to get caught doesn't mean it's right.

anybody who would intentionally break something to gain a newer product fraudulently is a scumbag. if they have the mindset to do that then I doubt any post on here is going to change their mind.

all im sayin is, if you had the opportunity to do it, as far as the iPad scenario goes, I am sure you would do it to.

There is a fine line between car insurance fraud and "accidental replacement "fraud""

how is there a difference? justify it all you want, fraud is fraud. you sould like a guy trying to convince his wife that oral sex wasn't cheating because it wasn't like it was full on intercourse :D

this is also a reaching. youre comparing violating holy vows versus taking advantage (yes a bit extra) of "accidental damage".

aren't alot of you anti-best buy anyways?

or wait, the ones promoting against this is pro-best buy, anti-circuit city.

I wasnt the one who thought of the idea in the first place by the way, i just learned of it here on the board..

but its not "accidental damage". it is purposefully damaging a product in order to get a new one. its fraud. as i said before, any scumbag with the mindset that it is ok to do that sort of act cannot be convinced that it is wrong via a message board post and you are just proving my point. thank you ;)

Well I've decided to try and go to BB Saturday and keep my preorder. I pre'd a 32GB and will try to get a 64GB at BB. If I can't get one I'll just keep my 32 and be satisfied with it and have an extra 100 bucks in my pocket.

noble one. we need more like you in this world. set an example for the entire human race. with your "mindset" we should/would have no issue achieving world peace.

You're getting sarcastic with him? There is no debate. No IMHO. It's a fact that it's ILLEGAL and the courts consider it the SAME CRIME as car or home insurance fraud.

The fact that you think most people would do it just shows how misguided you are. No, most people do not take advantage of accidental damage protection. If they did, Best Buy would've already stopped offering it.

So I just got back from my store, did a bit of snooping around with the SKUs that I photographed.

The two Incase items for $39.99 are both Neoprene sleeves, most likely alternating cover. The Incase item for $49.99 is a 'Book Jacket.'

The Targus items had odd names, but are most likely once again sleeves.

20 of the Apple Cases were on order, I checked the dock as well but forgot how many it said were on order.

Out of curiosity, I also checked to see how many iPads my store would be getting (smaller store, but has quite a large yearly budget). On order were 40 of each GB type of iPad, and delivery date was April the 3rd (they'll come in on the 2nd on the truck, and will be unloaded that night), so I'm assuming the 15 was a very conservative number.

Also, I don't know how many people actually know that Best Buy is carrying the iPad on launch day; obviously the people around here do, but it is not advertised at all on Bestbuy.com, not easy to find on Apple.com, and obviously not in the weekly ad this week for Best Buy. So maybe there will not be much of a line at all..?

You did well, James Bond! We appreciate your efforts :)

Can you verify what time BB will open on Saturday. My store is saying 10:00. But I thought I read 9:00.

It depends on your state (different states have different hours for stores, even varying within the same state), but I checked your ZIP code and the closest 20 stores and all of them are displaying 10 A.M. for opening (on the website), and that time is correct.
