Apple Expert: I work at Best Buy, and know there will be no restocking fee. There is no restocking fee for $1400 laptops that are sold literally at cost for Best Buy, so why would there be one for a max $829 device? Doesn't make sense in the slightest. If you knew the return system for Best Buy you'd know that all iPods, computers, and in the future iPads, that when they are returned they are given a designation of 'PRC,' which is essentially a service center where it is inspected/repaired/repacked and then resold as new or returned to the manufacturer for full credit.

darksideofjae: You're correct that they'd be no restocking fee (as it doesn't exist), but they would have 45 days to return it; not 14. The 45 is across the board for ANYTHING for Premier Silver members, laptops included.

Yea I work for Geek Squad and usually if you are exchanging from one thing to another in terms of laptops I'll usually have a RepII waive the restocking fee. But for anything like ipods there is no fee. You are correct

what are you talking about?

A 15% restocking fee will be charged on opened notebook computers, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, radar detectors, GPS navigation and in-car video systems.

To be fair - Best Buy (or any store) has policies and disclaimers. They are put in place - but like with anything - they are subject to compliance. What this means is - that "on record" they have these policies to cover their butts and charge you without you getting all pissy about why. If they state that there's a restocking fee upfront - then you enter into the purchase agreement with that knowledge.

That being said - they are not OBLIGATED to adhere to the policy as long as they don't increase/change the terms on the negative side of the customer.

They can choose NOT to enforce the policy and/or enforce it on x but not y.

You see it a lot with contracts/policies when it comes to consumer products. It's a safety net for the store.

Because I know for a fact (over six months of being at customer service) that restocking fees are not applied to anything! Stop quoting a policy from a website that is completely disambiguated from individual stores. If you buy a $999 laptop today, and return it opened in a week, saying that your experience was awful, wasn't what you expected, can't believe we sell something like this, et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum; you would be able to get a full refund, no restocking fee at all, without buying anything else. If you come in returning the same $999 opened laptop and say "I didn't want it," you will still get the no restocking fee (even if you buy nothing else), simply because that's the way that it goes.

And thank you samcraig, for clarifying as well. If a customer returns five (just an example number) $1000+ laptops throughout the course of a month, just due to dissatisfaction, that is when restocking fees come into question by management; not on the person who genuinely didn't want/need their purchased item.

lol, millions

and we won't really know for another 2 weeks because most bestbuy employees are retarded and you will get 5 different stories from 5 different employees.

lol..

I called the 2 local best buys here that both have the "Apple store in a store" and neither one of them knew if they would have the ipad tomorrow...

well if one thing in this thread is certain, its the above statement. This week I have been calling all my nearby Best Buys to get info about the iPad, its release, and possible quantities. Each employee I talked to told me something different and none of which was helpful at all.

I can just imagine some of the MR people calling best buy and how they deal with customer service. That being said - while not advocating how wonderful Best Buy or their employees are - to refer to them as retarded is offensive. Find another word. Second - from the sounds of it - there's no consistent communication going on between corporate, stores and their employees. If you're getting 5 different stories - put the blame on corporate not the person answering the phone.

Finding the word "retarded" offensive is gay.

WHAT!! Your best buy must be EXTREMELY generous. Whenever a customer comes over to us (geek squad) we have to take a look at the unit and then find out the reason for the return, if the person is returning the laptop just because they didn't like it, well guess what, read the back of the receipt, 15% restocking fee. That unit will then either be restored and put as open box OR will be restored and set as PRC. Only time we (geek Squad) will waive a 15% restocking fee is if the person is a silver member, exchanging it, or they make a big enough fuss about it and a manager gets involved. Besides, whenever you process a return on a laptop POS automatically puts in the restocking fee if you tell it that the user is not exchanging it and the item is open.

Haha, maybe I should transfer to your store, at least I don't have to worry about people chewing me out over the restocking fee on a daily basis haha.

Im thinking the "reall big fuss" may work in the case of the iPad since it really doesn't have a "category". Unless they specifically tell people at check out the return policy, why would people assume it falls under "laptop" since it's really not. You could make an argument that it's just as much an iTouch as it is a laptop.

No retailer likes returns. I would not assume based on a few comments that your Best Buy will ignore the posted return policy.

Not only is that offensive, it's just downright ignorant. I work at a Best Buy, and I can tell you that I, along with many of my co workers, are not retarded. Sure, there is some low quality workers who don't know anything (just like in any job/office), but that is certainly not the majority. If it was, we would be out of business, I seem to remember that happening to another store before.....

If you really want to know why you are hearing different stories, talk to corporate, hell, even talk to Apple! They have been incredibly secretive and haven't really bothered to share much information with Best Buy. Only TODAY did the trainings show up online in the Best Buy system. Why? Who knows! I'm enough of a nerd where I do all my research on my own anyways. Oh, and there is no more restocking fees at my store. I'm not sure how it is nationwide, but thats how my store has been for quite some time.

If you truly don't like the service at Best Buy, go somewhere else. Please.
